joshbuddy··on A new way police are surveilling: Calculating threat ‘score’
Imagine that this is just employing machine learning, where the training set is police reports filled out after the fact. Is this just big data being applied to threat prediction?
joshbuddy··on David Chaum Has a Plan to End the Crypto War
So, anyone else concerned that with all the various agencies clamering for crypto they can access, and the staunch refusal for researchers to provide it (and they say it's impossible), political leaders are going to point to something like this and say "see! here it is! let's use this."

The darkest possible outcome is something like this becomes mandated, and traffic is filtered to permit that crypto.

joshbuddy··on A Tale of Two Onboardings
Is it fair to presume the docker person is going to be waiting a lot more for tests to run due to poor io performance?
joshbuddy··on Why Johnny Still Can't Encrypt: Evaluating the Usability of a Modern PGP Client
You said "People need at least to know what public-key cryptography is before trying to use it." I think this is untrue. People really just need to know how to work with the technology, not understand what it's actually doing. Trying to explain the underlying principles makes it more confusing and thus, less safe.
joshbuddy··on The Interactive Way to Go
Man, we need this for bridge
joshbuddy··on Branchless development
How would this development style be compatible with code reviews?
joshbuddy··on Student Loans May Be Driving the Tuition Explosion
Canadian universities are all public though.
joshbuddy··on [dead]
I think there is something real there, look at this: https://www.google.com/trends/explore?hl=en-GB&q=Reddit+alte...

You could probably see these trends as evidence of discontent, and from this view, reddit discontent is growing.

joshbuddy··on The Unix Philosophy and Elixir as an Alternative to Go
Web workers are real concurrency and afaik, there is no GIL that spans across the main thread and the worker threads in any of the browser implementations of web workers.
joshbuddy··on Immersion: a people-centric view of your email life
It's great how this sort of experimentation isn't really practical anymore. We really need a different model for allowing these sorts of enhancements without compromising security
joshbuddy··on IndieWeb
I think that value proposition is very different for different people. For technical people, maybe it's a good idea. For non-technical people, I fear the indie web is very much out of reach.
joshbuddy··on IndieWeb
Is one of the goals that people should be able to participate in the indieweb without having to reveal their identity? That is, people can participate pseudonymously?
joshbuddy··on BitTorrent's Maelstrom browser enters open beta
Thank you for the reply. Very useful to know. I never got to try out sync.
joshbuddy··on BitTorrent's Maelstrom browser enters open beta
Care to elaborate?

joshbuddy··on Go to Prison for File Sharing? That's What Hollywood Wants in the TPP Deal
It seems that TAFTA and TTIP are the same thing, no? https://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2013/07/tafta-us-eus-trojan-tr...
joshbuddy··on Come for the tool, stay for the network
It's not merely kindling, if you have a good single player story, it indicates versatility. This sounds like a good thing to have.
joshbuddy··on Spoiler Alert – JQuery plugin for sensitive content
Hopefully, this is all fixed up now. What do you think? (Take a look at the demo again, should have all the latest changes)
joshbuddy··on Spoiler Alert – JQuery plugin for sensitive content
Should be easy enough to remove ... happy to take a pull request to fix it!
joshbuddy··on Spoiler Alert – JQuery plugin for sensitive content
This was just an idea.. I couldn't find anyone else trying to solve this issue. But .. give it a go. Seems to me that would only work for text though.
joshbuddy··on Spoiler Alert – JQuery plugin for sensitive content
Oh :( It works for me. I'm using Version 6.0.2 (8536.26.17). What about you?

joshbuddy··on The JOBS Act will very nearly legalize fraud in the stock market
What will this mean for RSUs?
joshbuddy··on Shitter: Toilet Paper of Tweets
So, this is an iPhone replacement? (my preferred way to read tweets on the toilet)
joshbuddy··on Teacher Suspended For Reading 'Ender's Game' To Middle School Students
It really irks me that in these conversations, we don't talk about the rights of the children, instead, it's just seen as a sliding scale between the rights of the parents and the rights of the state.

Of course, all of this makes me think of Ogden Nash's poem "Don't Cry Darling, It's Blood Alright" ... two lines:

Innocent infants have no use for fables about rabbits or donkeys or tortoises or porpoises, What they want is something with plenty of well-mutilated corpoises.

(It's also crazy that I can't find a complete copy of a poem from 1935 online)

joshbuddy··on Open-source Dropbox alternative powered by Git
Actually, it uses file system events so the pushes occur instantly. However, the pulls are done with polling.
joshbuddy··on Rails master is now 4.0.0.beta; Ruby 1.8.7 support dropped
I'm curious, have you looked at http://reneerb.com/? I contend as well that Rails is not well suited to REST. As it stands, I think Renee is about 2x faster than Sinatra.
joshbuddy··on Gitdocs: Open-source Dropbox using Ruby + Git
Oo. Great idea. I'll add that.
