joshbaptiste··on Why Women-Only Transit Options Have Caught On (2012)
hmm.. article is almost two years old, so I wonder what the current situation is as I've never heard of segregation of the sexes in Japan.
joshbaptiste··on New Chromecast apps for the holidays
Nice.. having Plex on Chromecast almost makes my Roku 2 useless, almost because I subscribe to MIT/PBS channels on Roku.
joshbaptiste··on How Hulu Scaled Serving 4 Billion Videos Using Redis
Great read, I'm somewhat surprised Hulu being owned by the mega corps ABC,FOX,NBC etc.. would be using open source technology such as Python/Lua and Mysql/Redis shards, for some reason I always think these corporations are always pushing some huge J2EE/Oracle/.NET type of stack.
joshbaptiste··on Bash Pitfalls
Well it is the main reference but it won't sustain the "HN effect", thanks for the mirror link. I typically use http://wiki.bash-hackers.org/doku.php which also provides a mirror and some extras.
joshbaptiste··on Bash Pitfalls
Ah yes, the ultimate reference from Freenode #bash, after you learn from Greycat's wiki you won't simply Google/DDG "bash tutorial" again and just head straight here.

joshbaptiste··on Smartphone PIN revealed by camera and microphone
Interesting, although on Android I prefer using a pattern pin anyway.
joshbaptiste··on The Reliability of Go
Indeed.. I would have liked to hear what took the Python script 3x longer. The longest part I would assume would be the network requests themselves which is inherent regardless of language.
joshbaptiste··on Pragmatic D Tutorial
I seriously doubt it.. A language usually takes off (business wise) once a major player starts using it in production, so developers can now tell their managers "Look XYZ is using it". Now that D got the Facebook plug it will now get more promotion and push to be used more widely.
joshbaptiste··on "Hi Guido [...]. You seem to have an awesome expertise on Python."
Golden comment response

   — How many years of experience do you have with Python?
   — ALL OF THEM.
joshbaptiste··on Extreme Linux Performance Monitoring and Tuning
Thanks for this, good refresher and some more insights on performance tools such as vmstat(1) etc, although I wish GNU/Linux had a production ready tracing tool that is as easy to use as Dtrace(1), watching Ktap currently which is making some headwinds.
joshbaptiste··on OpenSSH 6.3 Release
sftp(1): add support for resuming partial downloads using the "reget" command and on the sftp commandline or on the "get" commandline using the "-a" (append) option.

oooh, I likey..

joshbaptiste··on This Post Took 3 Years to Write
Don’t waste hours hours on something someone else can do in minutes. Value your time.

Yep, hence why I hire designers..

joshbaptiste··on Ask HN: Most difficult programming language?
Ok, what non esoteric languages would one consider extremely difficult?
joshbaptiste··on Python API for Hacker News
Some people, when confronted with a problem... bah you know the rest.

joshbaptiste··on Useless Use of Cat Award
The problem is when I see UUOC use in fairly large scripts. I've seen load averages shoot through the roof due to numerous separate commands that are being run causing needless context switching as each set of commands is being run per line of a large datafile.
joshbaptiste··on Useless Use of Cat Award
Yep, I see too many senior people violate UUOC/UUOG ie..

  cat file | grep bar | awk '{ print $1 }' | sort | uniq
which can be

  awk '/bar/ { print $1 | "sort -u"}' file
The best resource if you really want to be a better shell citizen (assuming you use Bash) overall is #bash on irc.freenode.net and Greg's bash wiki.

http://mywiki.wooledge.org/BashFAQ

Honorable mention also for #awk on irc.freenode.net also which has taught me a lot.

joshbaptiste··on Ask HN: Server under heavy load. Any downside to this hack?
Crude check but since it's temporary, an hour seems far too long an interval, you check at 10GMT , by 10:05GMT your server is in trouble and has 55 minutes to crap out. I would check every */5 minutes at least.
joshbaptiste··on PrivateCore
Cool concept, an encrypted in memory hypervisor, many relevant buzzwords used throughout the site. Yet the main questions that will probably be brought up include, is the source reviewable? at least the encryption portion and specifics on the encryption itself as today even major companies aren't trusted much when it comes to encryption.
joshbaptiste··on Run Windows 8 on a credit card computer
hmm.. I'm not sure much of the HN crowd cares to run Win8 on any sized PC, interesting nonetheless.
joshbaptiste··on PayPal hardware powered by Go
What's even more awesome is that this is an embedded arm device where usually C/lua has rank.
joshbaptiste··on Ask HN: What's the best way to learn a new human language?
I have been using the Pimsleur Method which is all audio during my drive from/to work, combined with watching spanish movies with subtitles on Netflix. My Spanish is now where I can keep up a basic conversation with my native South American friends. I have been doing this for about a year now.

joshbaptiste··on Nmap 6.40 Released – New scripts, new signatures, better performance
Wow, introduced to Nmap in 1999 on Slackware Linux 2.2.x , back then we would scour the internet on our providers CIDR range looking for open windows 95/98 shares and boy there were plenty back in the day. Today I mostly use it to find out what ports are listening on a node when not sure what type of OS is on a machine since we run AIX/Linux/HP UX/IBM TPF. Great to see Fydoor still behind his baby, got to try out NCat scripting utilities to improve some network testing bash scripts we have in house.
joshbaptiste··on Goread - Open Source Google Reader clone in Go
Wow goread.io is much more responsive then when I first tried it around a month ago .. definitely will start contributing on Github.
joshbaptiste··on Webflow (YC S13) Lets You Design Responsive Websites Visually, Publish Instantly
hmm.. I get "Your browser is too small. Please resize your window to fit this media query." in the demo Chrome 29/Opera 12.14
joshbaptiste··on Migrating to a cheaper VPS
Question.. if an offshore VPS provider has servers in the U.S. can the offshore VPS's be taken for search and seizure by U.S. Government simply because part of their business operates within U.S. borders?
