josephkern··on Newegg refuses to repair defective laptop because user installed Linux
Linux is not bad for your hardware, misconfiguration is bad for your hardware.

Annecdotally, heavy graphic card use on any laptop (yes even running windows) will cause a heat death in a shorter ammuont of time than normally expected.

josephkern··on Neal Stephenson wants to revolutionize sword fighting video games
Yes I understand the background, but the difference between the bow and the crossbow was that of both skill and strength. While not their primary pursuit the long-bow was still a skill that the State needed to motivate their citizens to practice between wars. As an aside, were average citizens allowed to hunt? From the little information I've read it seemed like it was considered poatching.

> And this was a weapon for the yeomanry, not the guys whose entire lives were devoted to maintaining military prowess.

Yes in fact they did spend their whole lives practicing. (From http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/English_longbow#Training):

"Longbows were very difficult to master because the force required to deliver an arrow through the improving armour of medieval Europe was very high by modern standards ... etons of longbow archers are recognisably deformed, with enlarged left arms and often bone spurs on left wrists, left shoulders and right fingers."

Further:

"It was the difficulty in using the longbow which led various monarchs of England to issue instructions encouraging their ownership and practice, including the Assize of Arms of 1252 and King Edward III's declaration of 1363."

The popularization of the crossbow, in part, was the reduceded need for training. In some areas it also paid better.

Revision control does not need software per se. Keeping multiple directories and files works too (not as well though).

josephkern··on Customizing the Mac to behave like Xmonad
I've had a love affair with the x200's for the last few years, x200, x220, and the x230. They are all very competent machines. I'm currently using a x200 with an SSD running linux as my primary machine.
josephkern··on Customizing the Mac to behave like Xmonad
Thinkpad. Great build quality, Linux friendly.

You probably should be expecting consistant DDOS attacks, or at least aggressive scanning.

OP failed to mention setting up DKIM and SPF as well.

Adobe Reader X actually has a decent sandbox ... but you're generally correct, I would trust chrome more.

Thank you for doing ten-minutes of research. Your investigative style of journalism is apparently better than both Kaspersky and the BBC.

And go over the grammar with a fine tooth comb. You might want to find a native English speaker to help you with the prose. The writing isn't bad, it's just not correct or fluid.

Do not consider these corrections, but examples of my observation.

"Do my customer know about what my product offer?"

Do my customers know about what my product has to offer?

"Look at following set of questions?"

Look at the following set of questions;

"Seem like familiar to you? Then Dokeeno can help you.

Does this seem familiar to you? Then Dokeeno can help.

josephkern··on Ask HN: Why does StackOverflow close so many useful topics?
Serverfault has the same problems. I barely go back there anymore, I just lost interest (despite being in the top 100). The questions are usually not that interesting, but I do enjoy helping the new sysadmins that don't know where to begin. Although I need to be quick about it (those questions are usually closed first).

Example: http://serverfault.com/questions/9766/what-a-beginner-should...

Only important data is backed up. Only backed up data is important.
josephkern··on Goodbye, CouchDB
As a systems guy, I appreciate stories about developers learning that systems are complicated, and the latest and greatest technology is often not as stable or optimized as hoped.

Although, I do have high hopes for Key:Value store data repositories.

josephkern··on Occupy Portland's Dec 3rd Tactic to Neutralize Police
The author:

1. Underestimates the superiority and effectiveness of the Command and Control of the police force

2. Overestimates the superiority of a mob vs a phalanx.

3. Makes generalized assumptions over why the police allowed them to stay.

4. Assumes that the police will not use their formation with calvary (automobiles, aricraft, and actual horses) as a means of denying the flank or the retreat.

This reads like someone who just went through a college course in ancient combat and has little practical experience in the matter of Command and Control or strategic thinking.

I dont think they will either, but their support crews might. All SOF need massive ammounts of logistical, technical, mechanical, and intelligence support. All of their ground crews and support personel would greatly benifit from a tablet, if it's a dell streak that they expect to break, so be it, just so long as spares are available.

The greatest benifit that these support personel will have is a smaller foot print, and no manual pages to count. Yes that's right they actually count each and every page of every manual on an anual basis.

Forgive the mispellings and grammar typing this on my phone.

josephkern··on Deft -- easy note taking for Emacs
I was using simplenote.el for a bit as well, your efforts are greatly appreciated.

:-)

josephkern··on Deft -- easy note taking for Emacs
Yeah, don't follow other people's guides to get started. Just realize that org-mode has so many features (including Literate Programming) it's easy to get lost.

Just start by using it as an outliner, when your files get too big or you need to start keeping TODO lists, look into agenda views, then capture, then ... well you know.

Start as simple as possible, and when things break, or don't do what you need, spend 15 minutes and make them work.

josephkern··on Deft -- easy note taking for Emacs
Sure there is.

"You can also customize the major mode that Deft uses to edit files, either through M-x customize-group or by adding something like the following to your .emacs file:

(setq deft-text-mode 'markdown-mode)"

All you need to do is:

(setq deft-text-mode 'org-mode)

Or any other major mode for that matter.

josephkern··on Why every programmer should have a Tiddlywiki
Orgmode also has an amazing extension babel, which allows Literate Programming (or just inserting code snippets).

Using the #+BEGIN_SRC <mode-name> tag will also allow you to edit any code snippet in its own major mode.

josephkern··on Computable Document Format
This is very similar to org-mode with babel and latex output. http://orgmode.org/worg/org-contrib/babel/intro.html
josephkern··on The first Google eBooks-integrated e-reader
I wonder if Barnes and Noble is getting ready to follow suit. It would be great to see Google Books on a Nook ... (of course it would be great to see the Kindle app as well (without rooting the device)).

josephkern··on Let's Stop Talking About "Backups"
Totally agree on these points. The Joel-Atwood experience is not that of two programmers starting a company. It's a story of two programmers learning about System Administration.
