josefresco··on Roomba maker goes bankrupt, Chinese owner emerges
I have a second-hand "dumb Eufy" and it's great. No cameras, no microphone, no Wi-Fi, no app, no calling home to mommy. It just spins, sucks and bangs (gently) around my house and I don't get mad when it gets stuck. It cleans under things I can't reach easily with a vacuum, and it cost me almost nothing.
josefresco··on Getting a Gemini API key is an exercise in frustration
I sell managed Google Ads services and have never had issues with my clients being banned. Google Ads sucks for 1000 other reasons.
josefresco··on The Walt Disney Company and OpenAI Partner on Sora
> As part of this new, three-year licensing agreement, Sora will be able to generate short, user-prompted social videos that can be viewed and shared by fans, drawing from a set of more than 200 animated, masked and creature characters from Disney, Marvel, Pixar and Star Wars, including costumes, props, vehicles, and iconic environments. In addition, ChatGPT Images will be able to turn a few words by the user into fully generated images in seconds, drawing from the same intellectual property. The agreement does not include any talent likenesses or voices.

Is there a list of allowed characters? Or are we just supposed to "spin the wheel" and deal with whatever results are returned? Or will these characters be selected instead of using natural language?

josefresco··on Ask HN: Should "I asked $AI, and it said" replies be forbidden in HN guidelines?
This comment from Dang 5 months ago is a little more nuanced and allows for some usage: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=44704054
josefresco··on Ask HN: Should "I asked $AI, and it said" replies be forbidden in HN guidelines?
As a community I think we should encourage "disclaimers" aka "I asked <AIVENDOR>, and it said...." The information may still be valuable.

We can't stop AI comments, but we can encourage good behavior/disclosure. I also think brevity should still be rewarded, AI or not.

josefresco··on Pebble Index 01 – External memory for your brain
I.... I kinda love this. Non-rechargeable battery and all. I don't need something else to charge. I understand this is a "luxury" but seamlessly recording "thoughts" is my personal computing holy grail.
josefresco··on Netflix to Acquire Warner Bros
Sympathetic sure! But the story doesn't work without the contrast between his outward horrid appearance and his inner humanity.
josefresco··on Netflix to Acquire Warner Bros
>His limbs were in proportion, and I had selected his features as beautiful. Beautiful! Great God! His yellow skin scarcely covered the work of muscles and arteries beneath; his hair was of a lustrous black, and flowing; his teeth of a pearly whiteness; but these luxuriances only formed a more horrid contrast with his watery eyes, that seemed almost of the same colour as the dun-white sockets in which they were set, his shrivelled complexion and straight black lips.

As I said, the contrast between "pretty" or "human" traits vs "monster" just wasn't there.

josefresco··on Netflix to Acquire Warner Bros
It was too long.
josefresco··on Netflix to Acquire Warner Bros
Thanks for stating the obvious and I assure you I know the story well. In order for the entire premise to work, there needs to be this conflict or tension between the perception of the "monster" and the true reality of his humanity. This movie failed at effectively portraying this conflict by humanizing the monster too much. Just my 2 cents.
josefresco··on Netflix to Acquire Warner Bros
> Frankenstein and Death by Lightning were two standout successes recently.

IMHO Frankenstein" was pretty terrible. The makeup was awful, the effects were cheap, the monster... wasn't a monster! The entire premise depends on him being a monster, not some sort of misunderstood, sympathetic EMO.

josefresco··on Americans Are Microdosing Obesity Drugs, Driven by 'Thin Is in' Marketing Blitz
Anecdotally I wouldn't say the marketing is "Thin is in" more like: "We have new options for those battling obesity". The commercials I've seen seem to be uplifting and not selling a "thin body/lifestyle".
josefresco··on Show HN: I made a down detector for down detector
I randomly started vibe coding a website monitoring tool last week knowing full well about the mature competitors in this space and questioning myself along the way. Doesn't seem so crazy now.
josefresco··on Anxiety disorders tied to low levels of choline in the brain
Misleading headline. This is more accurate:

"Meta-analysis finds people with anxiety disorders have lower levels of choline in their brains"

There's no evidence (yet) of anything being "tied to" anything else.

josefresco··on Asus Ascent GX10
> Free monitor: No / Yes

How is the monitor "free" if the Mac costs more?

josefresco··on NY school phone ban has made lunch loud again
Anecdotally burner phones are already being discussed and presumably used. They lock up your primary phone, and you sneakily use your burner phone which if confiscated can be used again or easily replaced/abandoned.
josefresco··on Is Health Insurance Even Worth It Anymore?
Thank you for this. I found my former PCP on this map!
josefresco··on Pomelli: Google's free tool for generating website marketing posters is amazing
Do you have an example prompt that gave you good results? The poster it made for me was terrible - gibberish copy, non-sensical messaging, didn't use my branding colors at all - maybe it was unable to scan my website?
josefresco··on I tried OpenAI's new Atlas browser but I still don't know what it's for
"cynicism masquerading as software"
josefresco··on Claude Memory
Not since skills but earlier as others have said I've noticed Claude chat seems to create tools to create the output I need instead of just doing it directly. Obviously this is a cost saving strategy, although I'm not sure how the added compute of creating an entire reusable tool for a simple one-time operation helps but hey what do I know?
josefresco··on We let OpenAI's "Agent Mode" surf the web for us–here's what happened
Interesting article but the scores for me were a little odd:

>With seven minutes of background work, the agent was able to open up a new Google Sheet and quickly enter 12 rows of well-formatted data for 12 different PR contacts. Unfortunately, it stopped well before it had a chance to go through all 164 emails returned by that initial Gmail search.

This got 8/10 but it sounds like failure or maybe 5/10.

josefresco··on Rivian's TM-B electric bike
Same here, a local woman was recently impaled by an ebike. I doubt they'll require licenses but they will start banning them on busy bike / pedestrian trails.
josefresco··on Claude Skills
I just used tested the canvas-design skill and the results were pretty awful.

This is the skill description:

Create beautiful visual art in .png and .pdf documents using design philosophy. You should use this skill when the user asks to create a poster, piece of art, design, or other static piece. Create original visual designs, never copying existing artists' work to avoid copyright violations.

What it created was an abstract art museum-esque poster with random shapes and no discernable message. It may have been trying to design a playing card but just failed miserably which is my experience with most AI image generators.

It certainly spent a lot of time, and effort to create the poster. It asked initial questions, developed a plan, did research, created tooling - seems like a waste of "tokens" given how simple and lame the resulting image turned out.

Also after testing I still don't know how to "use" one of these skills in an actual chat.

josefresco··on Claude Skills
Joking aside, I ask Claude how to uses Claude... all the time! Sometimes I ask ChatGTP about Claude. It actually doesn't work well because they don't imbue these AI tools with any special knowledge about how they work, they seem to rely on public documentation which usually lags behind the breakneck pace of these feature-releases.
josefresco··on Nobel Peace Prize 2025: María Corina Machado
You didn't draw the line at Henry Kissinger, Yasser Arafat or even the European Union itself?!?
josefresco··on Trump administration has killed a massive solar power project in Nevada
Well for starters, Ivanpah Solar Power Facility was an attempt to build an innovative new solar design. Esmeralda 7 would have used now-dominant, proven, highly efficient PV technology. Apples and Oranges.

Oh and Esmeralda 7 would have been 16 times larger.

josefresco··on California passes law to ban ultra-processed foods from school lunches
US today, EU tomorrow.

EU obesity has increased by 138% across the broader WHO European Region since 1975, with rates rising 21% between 2006 and 2016 alone.

josefresco··on IRonCub: A Humanoid Robot Designed to Fly Like Iron Man
Came here to say this. It appears 14 words into the article! I laughed out loud and immediately stopped reading. Write an article when their robot has "saved" at least one living thing and I'll pay attention. Until then it's just vapor. In the meantime I'll wear my downvotes with pride.
josefresco··on Record Everything
I would record more things but my (i)Cloud storage fees would be huge.
josefresco··on Parking is still a nightmare in 2025, we're building the fix
How is this different/better than using a traditional "maps" app? Does this compete at all with SpotHero? Is the availability data real-time or is it a static database of public parking?
