jorkos··on Why I'm speaking on less panels
title: speaking ON less panels ??

I agree with the sentiment here; i've found that being a moderator of the panel is a more interesting role.

jorkos··on Ancient Underground Cities of Turkey
exploring some of these on a 3 month trip to Turkey in the late 90's was definitely a highlight of all travels i've had; get there if you can and give yourself time in the region if you can
jorkos··on Ask HN: If you had to pay ~5$ per month for an online service, what would it be?
- send me a weekly email with a few cool events / venues going on in my city (think private thrillist)
jorkos··on Groupon Insiders Take $345 Million Off The Table In Latest Funding Round
37signals took money off the table w/ money from Bezos....exact same play
jorkos··on What I Learned from Zuckerberg's Mistakes
Couldn't agree more. I see these companies as much more similar than different. All of them are very 'user driven' and that's what has made them such impactful companies.
jorkos··on If Chatroulette Had Facebook Connect, People Would Keep Their Pants On
If Facebook Had Video Chat, People Would Use It. (expect it soon)
jorkos··on M.B.A. = E.G.O.
I agree with Buffett's comments; i was lucky to get to meet Buffett in Omaha while in business school and his insights and analysis of the American economy were quite profound. Reading Berkshire's annual report should be required reading for anyone in business.
jorkos··on Ask HN: Best book you read in 2010 and briefly why
"Reluctant Genuis" (biography of Alexander Graham Bell) - a must read to better understand the context in which the phone was invented, and the tremendous impact it had as a technology; the story of an amazing inventor, period.
jorkos··on Bitly News
categories are needed as you don't have a unified community submitting content
jorkos··on Google Buys Groupon for $2.5 Billion?
over time Google could automate a lot of this and increase the margins on the business; the acquisition makes a lot of sense from my vantage
jorkos··on Joojoo is dead
Don't count them out. Let's see how version 2.0 does on Android. They've shown they can build something with a very lean team...
jorkos··on After months of work I've launched my startup. Any critiques?
- take out testimonials link if you don't have any - differentiate from theresumator and countless others in one strong sentence at top - keep going with it!
jorkos··on Please review my startup - Answerous

jorkos··on I Can’t Work Under These Conditions
that's actually not true, they like the founders to stick around; Buffett is great at keeping founders around long after Berkshire buys them
jorkos··on Ask HN: advice for a college grad starting a career?
In general i'd recommend you put yourself in roles where you can accelerate your learning; don't settle into a role that you've figured out and understand....keep pushing yourself and seek out mentors along the way.
jorkos··on Ask HN: Any interest in learning how startups actually work?
Yes this is useful. In terms of the "infrastructure" I would drill deeper around surprises for people, what pieces they see as critical, etc.; just knowing the infrastructure is much less valuable than its relative importance and key lessons around its use... Good luck
jorkos··on Ask HN: How should I approach buying my ideal domain name?
Ask for the price from an anonymous email as a starting point....fairly easy.
jorkos··on Ask HN: The value of ideas
If you have the ability to execute on your idea to test it's validity, then it's worth a lot! Think Chatroulette...hotmail....youtube...etc. Conversely, if you can't execute on the idea then it's worth far less and you should share it widely, get feedback, and work towards building a team around the idea that can execute upon it....

I think the meme has gotten popular because it's mostly oriented to people that can't execute on their ideas....and thus it holds some truth.

jorkos··on Ask HN: How would you invest $50,000?
1) bootstrap a company....get products out the door.....try to find product/market fit

2) best starting point is to go through the cycle yourself....if you haven't, refer to response to 1)....this investment in building a company will pay off down the road when you want to invest in other startups (and have accredited investor status, etc.)

jorkos··on Ask HN: I made $24k over the last month. Now what?
I would think about monetizing your experience of making money through apps; take a small amount of your money and create a resource for building and deploying cheap apps - this could be in the form of a PDF, etc. Add a dynamic element like 2 hours of personal consultation. Sell at a few price points and package this through a new app "Learn to sell apps app" - buyers need to get the app to get the PDF.

This type of strategy leverages your experience & diversifies your revenue streams w/ very little capital requirements....to make serious income you want to move beyond just creating apps which may have very short life spans. Good luck

jorkos··on Ask HN: Plans for 2010
