jorgemf··on Arch Linux turns 20: Small, simple, great documentation
probably you installed something manually at some point, otherwise pacman does nothing wrong. Rarely you have to touch something manually because a mayor upgrade, but I think it has been like 4-6 times in 20 years for me.

If you want to install something manually in arch it is better to create a package first (if it is not already in aur). That way pacman can check for corruptions before installing anything

jorgemf··on Arch Linux turns 20: Small, simple, great documentation
As I developer I solved my issues with arch using the latest dev tools in arch and running the code in a docker container. That way I also solve all developers issues with dependencies as everybody runs the same docker container with the same libraries.
jorgemf··on What’s New in TensorFlow 2.10?
For that statement you would need to show industry graphs, not only research
jorgemf··on GoDaddy locks out derivatives of Chrome
I though it was the opposite, I guess WhatsApp was doing something weird to detect Vivaldi. Do you know how they solve it?
jorgemf··on GoDaddy locks out derivatives of Chrome
Vivaldi workarounds these kind of issues by identifying itself as chrome. When a site blocks vivaldi because it is not chrome the site is added to a list and it will identify itself as chrome in the future (I know because it happened with the web version of whatsapp).
jorgemf··on Twitter lays off 30% of its talent acquisition team
I think it is just a way to call the human resources team. It sounds better if you are hired by the talent acquisition team rather than the human resources team.
jorgemf··on YaLM-100B: Pretrained language model with 100B parameters
No, it is more like generating a conversations, translating text, summarization texts, writing code, etc.
jorgemf··on Accelerated PyTorch Training on M1 Mac
You need something constant, either the model or the hardware, otherwise you cannot have those relative numbers. And you usually want to have a trend. See my other reply
jorgemf··on Accelerated PyTorch Training on M1 Mac
It doesn't matter. Deep learning have been mainstream for only 10 years. MNIST is a dataset from 1998 and it is still being used in research papers. The most important thing is to have a constant baseline, and ResNets are a baseline.

Think about changing the model every other year: - 2015: ResNet trained in Nvidia k80 - 2017: Inception trained in Nvidia 1080 ti - 2019: Transformer trained in Nvidia V100 - 2021: GTP-3 trained in a cluster

Now you have your new fancy algorithm X and an Nvidia 4090. How much better is your algorithm compared to the state of the art, and how much have you improved compared to the algorithms 5 years ago? Now you are in a nightmare and you have to run all the past algorithms in order to compare it. Or how fast is the new Nvidia card? which noone still have and nvidia has decided to give numbers based on a their own model?

jorgemf··on Accelerated PyTorch Training on M1 Mac
Probably because it will be impossible to compare with old results. If every year the community chooses a different model, how are you going to compare results year over year?
jorgemf··on Please Stop Using Grey Text
It is his website in medium, he could have chosen any other color for the background and make it not as horrible as it is for reading. Or he could have chosen another platform to publish his content.
jorgemf··on Please Stop Using Grey Text

Open the website and the first thing I see is dark background and grey-light text. Close the website. The website doesn't stand for the claims.

jorgemf··on Show HN: PostgresML, now with analytics and project management
When I was talking about metrics I meant metrics of the model (accuracy, precission, recall, mean square error, etc), not performance.
jorgemf··on Show HN: PostgresML, now with analytics and project management
How do you deal with different dataset train/validation/test? How do you measure the degradation of the model? Is there any way to select the metric you target (accuracy, f1-score or any other)?
jorgemf··on DALL-E 2 open source implementation
This uses several models. One of them is already trained and released, which you can use or you can train it too yourself. The other models need training. Training means having a labelled dataset and let the model run several iterations until the loss function has a good value in order to use the model. This code is quite complex as it is not one model but several ones and also you can make some changes to generate bigger images and to use better models for some parts. Once you have everything trained (you might need a GPU or a cluster of GPUs to train it for several days/weeks/months), you can use it.

I know this wont help you very much. But, either you are willing to spend a lot of time messing around with the code and have access to a good hardware to train the models, or you would have to wait until someone releases something already trained.

They were suppose to be a non-profit company that will help to develop AI. AI community is very open, and here you have someone different from OpenAI releasing an open source code from a research from OpenAI (because they didn't release their code)

The abstract? Or what do you mean?
jorgemf··on Ask HN: Should HN require/encourage job postings to have a salary range?
Actually the justification to pay you less in some places is because cost of life is lower. Which is true because food and rent is less expensive, but some products are the same or more expensive (like technology). So quality of life is worse.
jorgemf··on Ask HN: Should HN require/encourage job postings to have a salary range?
you know that in some examples the company sells more expensive the products in the regions where they pay less salary. In that example the games are more expensive in euros than in dollars, but the companies from states probably will offer less salary to someone from Europe. So it is even worse with your example.
jorgemf··on Ask HN: Should HN require/encourage job postings to have a salary range?
If a company doesn't have clear the positions they are offering, and so, they are more less know how much should they pay. I don't want to apply. I have applied to so many companies which didn't know very well what they wanted to hire that it was a completely waste of time. I you know how much value the position is going to add to your company you have a clear defined role and a range to spend in that role. So yes, it will be more difficult for startups, but it will clear some undefined roles that wont be translated into jobs in the future.
jorgemf··on Ask HN: Should HN require/encourage job postings to have a salary range?
I never liked this argument, does your company charge differently based on the location to the people who is using its products? No. So why does it pay differently based on location?
jorgemf··on JEdit – Programmer's Text Editor
I used it a lot when I was studying computer science 18 years ago. Thanks!
jorgemf··on From macOS to Arch Linux
I think pacman is one of the best package managers. And as I said, arch it is quite stable, a little less than debian, which stops me from using it in production, but good enough to use it daily.
jorgemf··on From macOS to Arch Linux
Many years ago is not the same in Linux in general. Try it now. I didn't have those issues in more than a decade. Everything worked out of the box
jorgemf··on From macOS to Arch Linux
My point is that will lose more time installed unsupported packages than losing some time when arch breaks, because it rarely breaks (less than once a year). And fixes usually take 5 minutes
jorgemf··on From macOS to Arch Linux
What offer debian that arch doesn't offer? Arch it is really stable and with latest packages. I see debian as a pain in the ass when you want a new packages or you have to upgrade to a new version. I don't have those issues in arch.
jorgemf··on From macOS to Arch Linux
Pacman now tells you when there is an announcement in the website. Most of this announcements are due some issue introduced in a package. I haven't faced all of them as usually they resolved quickly and when I update the system the new packages solves the issue. Rarely there has been a breaking change in a package that needed some easy manual intervention. I have maybe done this line 5 or 6 times in 15 years. Compared to Ubuntu, I find it upgrading process more tedious (I haven't tried it in the last year's so maybe now is better). Said that, probably i won't use arch for a production environment and stick to Ubuntu, but for home/work system, I love it
jorgemf··on From macOS to Arch Linux
Usually when gnome doesn't start up in arch it is due extensions which are not supported either gnome or arch. But you usually find them in AUR, which fix your issues quite quickly. I haven't had any issues with gnome 3 in arch since they move to it, apart from extensions and a couple of things not well integrated in Wayland+gnome. Said that, it has been much more a nightmare for me to install packages in docker images of Ubuntu.
jorgemf··on Swift Regrets
Yes, but kotlin has been much more stable for more years.
jorgemf··on Swift Regrets
Don't forget kotlin. It is a really game changer.
