We used to play this same game at the Disney store, back in the 90’s
jordemort··on Abusing copyright strings to trick SW into thinking it's running competitor's PC
30 years on and still unwilling to name the actual companies involved. I get that discretion is a thing but this feels like how history becomes folklore.
jordemort··on Skip the exit interview when you leave your job
I'd do an exit interview if it was paid. Nobody has ever offered to pay me for attending one, so I've never gone to one.
jordemort··on Why Android can't use CDC Ethernet (2023)
I wrote this after a bad week at a previous job trying to get an Android device to work with a CDC Ethernet adapter.

Since writing this, a couple people have let me know that there is a particular bit in the MAC address, that if flipped, will cause the kernel to assign an `ethX` name instead of `usbX` name. I haven't tried it myself or updated the post with that information because I moved on to a different job, and Android devices are no longer a large part of my life.

Of course, that only helps if you have a CDC device where you're in control of the MAC address (i.e. maybe another Linux device pretending to be a CDC adapter)

jordemort··on Man pages are great, man readers are the problem
I like pinfo for this (although it is primarily intended for viewing GNU Info pages, it can also display man pages): https://github.com/baszoetekouw/pinfo

Using it feels a lot like lynx. It recognizes cross-references between pages and allows you to navigate through them, as the author of this post requests.

Big oof

I would fund one of the Firefox forks to become independent of Mozilla.

jordemort··on A few words about FiveThirtyEight

jordemort··on Hello World on z/OS (2018)
Speaking as someone who had to do a lot of work with these machines in college (and one job after grad school until I found something else), I think the author’s main problem is that they are insistent on using ISPF. Nobody I knew in either place would touch the thing, it was universally hated. We all did our editing locally, used FTP to transfer files to the mainframe, and created datasets and compiled our code by submitting pre-written JCL that older and wiser sages had composed for us.
jordemort··on Matrix 2.0 Is Here
I used to host a homeserver for myself up until very recently, but during their most recent conference, some folks decided to conduct a harassment campaign where they repeatedly posted CSAM in the Synapse Admins channel. Synapse didn't really offer me any built-in tools to preempt that sort of behavior - you can't even block domains. I found a third party moderation bot but it didn't look quick or easy to set up.

Being exposed personally to that sort of thing was bad enough but making sure it wasn't persisted in backups and my S3 buckets was way more trouble than it was worth, so I shut the service down and nuked the whole thing. I was mostly hanging out in public channels and using bridges; I only had one small group of IRL friends that I talked to on it and they practically leapt at the opportunity when I suggested moving the group chat to a different platform.

I see that "Trust & Safety" is on their list of things to tackle next, so perhaps I'll check it out when they announce Matrix 3.0.

What I tell people new to on-call: "Quit. Find another job."

I won't accept jobs with on-call rotations anymore.

jordemort··on Google Cache is fully dead
Who's taking odds on when they shut down search?
jordemort··on Nintendo Files Suit for Infringement of Patent Rights Against Pocketpair, Inc
Nintendo took so long to do this that I kind of assumed they didn’t actually care. The pal is kind of out of the ball at this point.
jordemort··on Steam Families Is Here
Been using the beta with my kid for a few months, it's great. I got to take the parental lock code off of my own account and I no longer have to hide Genital Jousting from my own library.
jordemort··on Hiding Linux Processes with Bind Mounts
Oh yes, very easily, although you'd be surprised at how much works without a functional /proc.
jordemort··on Hiding Linux Processes with Bind Mounts
If you have the privilege to pull off bind-mounting on top of a particular process directory in /proc you should also be able to mount something on top of /proc itself that will present a false /proc/mounts and conceal your trickery. I experimented a bit and wasn't able to bind a single file on top of /proc/mounts and I seem to be having trouble getting procfs to participate in an overlayfs, but if you were really dedicated you could construct a whole fake /proc by hand, or create something using FUSE to create a /proc that redacts anything you want, including mountpoints.
jordemort··on TinyPod – Apple Watch case with scroll wheel
There is at least some market for it, judging by the amount of money raised by Tangara: https://www.crowdsupply.com/cool-tech-zone/tangara
jordemort··on Show HN: SmokeScanner – Using cigarette price arbitrage to find free flights
Assuming you can find someone who wants to buy a one-off carton of foreign smokes for full price from some stranger
jordemort··on Turning the Tables on AI
I thought this article was going to be a pun on the domain it’s hosted on.
jordemort··on ICQ will stop working from June 26
Hasn't it not actually been ICQ for a while now? I thought the original service with the numbers (387175) was shut down and replaced with something else entirely at some point.
jordemort··on Amber: Programming language compiled to Bash
I think this is a pretty interesting idea. I could see myself using this on one of my previous embedded jobs; we needed to stuff a bunch of complex logic into our initramfs and the only interpreter we could really fit in there was the sh from busybox. We ended up with a pretty hairy shell script that probably would have been nicer to write in Amber.
jordemort··on Run0, a systemd based alternative to sudo, announced
systemd-nspawn is actually pretty great, and is mostly just a tool that exposes functionality that systemd already needs for other reasons. IIRC it was originally developed to aid in testing systemd itself, and was initially shipped as an unsupported extra in case other people found it useful.

systemd-resolved is the only way I've ever been able to get dockerd to play nice with Tailscale DNS; it's also the best way that I've found to get a system to pick different upstream DNS servers depending on domain. The alternative is hand-rolling it with dnsmasq or something similar.

I admit I haven't really seen a huge advantage to using systemd-networkd over NetworkManager yet, but for servers with relatively static network configurations, I greatly prefer systemd-networkd over any of the various implementations of ifupdown.

jordemort··on Equinox.space
It would be a shame, just a tragedy, if this machine suffered catastrophic hardware failure with 3 months left on my AppleCare contract :)
jordemort··on Equinox.space
Doesn't seem like the crash is repeating itself. Now it is running fine. The first time through, it died right after I was told to open the door but right before the door became openable.
