Clojure stuff mainly.

jordanrobinson··on Parinfer: Simpler Lisp Editing
After using Parinfer for a few years the editing experience felt less like typing and more like a cross between magic and the scene from Ghost in the Shell with the split hands. It's a real shame they weren't able to add it to Calva.
jordanrobinson··on How to (and how not to) design REST APIs
While I do agree with this in almost all cases, I have found scenarios where there are actions that don't map easily to a HTTP verb and need something more explicit.

What I've generally done in these cases is pretty similar to https://cloud.google.com/apis/design/custom_methods which also explains the problem better than I can.

I'd be interested as to how you'd solve some of these problems without an explicit verb in the path.

jordanrobinson··on We’re opening up access to Gov.uk forms
If you go off this issue it looks like they use tinsel at Christmas, although I'm not sure where that logic is.

https://github.com/alphagov/calendars/issues/678

jordanrobinson··on What every software developer must know about Unicode in 2023
Anyone know what the story is behind the "Weird Emoji" around 140000 on the map?
jordanrobinson··on Shit life syndrome
I'd love to know the rationale for why they geoblock the UK from watching this particular documentary.
jordanrobinson··on A Breakdown of HTTP Clients in Elixir
This was great, selfishly I really wish we had an up to date comparison of HTTP clients like this but for Clojure.
jordanrobinson··on OpenBenches – A map of memorial benches
I went looking for and found this one:

https://openbenches.org/bench/14519

I do wonder if they're going to have to update it at some point though.

jordanrobinson··on German cartel office initiates proceedings against PayPal
Sure, I don't know the details about Germany but I'm pretty sure it's the same in the UK. https://www.gov.uk/government/news/card-surcharge-ban-means-...
jordanrobinson··on Drowning in AI Generated Garbage: the silent war we are fighting
It's a shame, this seems like a really great idea, but I just tried to use it and for a recipe from a book I own it comes up with:

> We’ve helped you locate this recipe but for the full instructions you need to go to its original source.

Which I guess makes sense, how can they verify I own the cookbook, but still very disappointing.

jordanrobinson··on Show HN: I built a website to find nearby cafes to work remotely from
The one in Manchester is still here, just under a different name: https://oppidan-social.com/

It's quite reasonably priced actually, and a bit more co-working focused than your average coffee shop.

jordanrobinson··on UK schools receive 300k CO2 monitors in gov initiative to reduce COVID19 spread
Worth bearing in mind that regardless of the rest of your comment, that probably less than 1% of schools in the UK have a hvac system.
jordanrobinson··on How to Set Up a Router's Port Forwarding for a Nintendo Switch Console
Perhaps you should go with an HTTPS one instead then.
jordanrobinson··on Tuple: Pair Programming Tool for macOS
Would it be cheeky to take this opportunity to ask how the Linux version is going? I'm still looking forward to it and it's the main thing holding our team back from adopting it last I checked.
jordanrobinson··on Windows urges users to use Bing same way as urgent security warnings
At this point I've spent dozens of hours trying to fix sleep/hibernate on this laptop without success, it's a dell xps 9500, doesn't feel like it should be considered super obscure hardware.

Not to mention the occasional bluetooth issues.

I appreciate it's the manufacturer's fault but it's still a problem.

jordanrobinson··on We Just Gave $155k to Open Source Maintainers
I've seen sentry in a lot of analytics blocklists, so I'd assume it would be from that.
jordanrobinson··on Show HN: Epub.to – ePub to pdf, mobi, Kindle, and an API
I haven't tried with this tool yet but I would be surprised if so, purchased Kindle books usually have quite a bit of DRM involved.

There are methods to strip it using old versions of the desktop kindle app that have exploits, but it's not overly easy to do if you're not familiar with stuff like that.

jordanrobinson··on Language Learning with Netflix extension
This is slightly offtopic but ichi.moe is a wonderful tool, thanks so much for making it.
jordanrobinson··on Nobody talks about the real reason to use Tabs over Spaces
I remember seeing this a while ago: https://ukupat.github.io/tabs-or-spaces/ which is basically what you're talking about.

Of note are Go and a few others, Go because it generally uses gofmt, which uses tabs, as far as I understand.

jordanrobinson··on Another reason why Docker containers may be slow
Many would say they already are with Kotlin.
jordanrobinson··on Building a fast, secured and free static site in less than three hours
Looks like it's all mainly to do with the static site generation though. You can certainly still dump some handmade html into a gh-pages branch and have a (non-generated) static site in less than ten minutes.
jordanrobinson··on Ask HN: Projects that don't make you money but you're doing it out of sheer joy?
Making websites like this: http://javascriptbythekilogram.online/

Though I can't really take the credit on this one, I just had the idea.

jordanrobinson··on How to protect your cryptocurrency: An in-depth guide
Just what I wanted, a modal that blocks the entire page after you've read the first paragraph, asking me to sign up for something vague.

Surely the conversion on these can't be good?

jordanrobinson··on Nutella 'Hired' an Algorithm to Design New Jars. And It Was a Sell-Out Success
A little disappointing that there doesn't seem to be anything more in-depth than "An algorithm did it" in the article, or it seems in any of the articles I could find on this.
jordanrobinson··on Cron Job Run Time Predictor
There are quite a few of these about on the internet, they make a nice little pet project if you're trying to pick up a language or methodology.

Full disclaimer: I made one as a toy a while ago (http://whenwillcronfire.jordanrobinson.co.uk/) but never really did anything with it.

jordanrobinson··on How to make Slack less bad for you
You can replace them, so assumedly you could replace the "motivational" messages with things such as "Work harder" or "You are not special" or "You are an easily replaceable cog".
jordanrobinson··on Reactive Streams for the JVM hits 1.0.0
I remember seeing a talk on this around a year ago, and while it did have some important backing and solve some interesting problems, there wasn't much in terms of examples of people using it in production.

Is this still the case? I guess with it hitting 1.0 it's more likely now, but I'd still be interested to hear if anyone's had much experience with this up until now.
