jooke··on It’s Impossible to Prove Your Laptop Hasn’t Been Hacked
For the average person (i.e. threat model is criminals not states) I think this would be less secure due to the difficulty of patching
jooke··on Ten Years of Instapaper
I only save full page with Evernote (which is the default when you save using their clipper). Means I have it offline and available if the page changes. If it's something where I want it to update I'll bookmark instead in my browser.
jooke··on Facebook Has Got an Instagram Problem
I agree with you about the news feed. FB messenger is still the easiest way to contact people (almost everyone has it, you don't need any information being a name). Events are great for easily informing people of what you're doing. Groups are great for alerting a group of people to some information (basically better mailing lists).
jooke··on A RAM Edition of Dirty Coding Tricks
What's the point of having more memory if not for new features?
jooke··on The Big Vitamin D Mistake
Do you know why this is the case? Is there some flaw in their methodology?
jooke··on Most popular Python packages now support Python 3
Could you give some examples please?
jooke··on Quantum A.I. Publications
This is still a theoretical problem, not one solvable by building a faster computer
jooke··on Drinking 3-4 Cups of Coffee Is “More Likely to Benefit Health Than to Harm It”
Where on this page does it say that having this mutation makes coffee less harmful?
jooke··on Drinking 3-4 Cups of Coffee Is “More Likely to Benefit Health Than to Harm It”
At one point a similar sentiment could have been expressed about smoking
jooke··on Equifax security freeze PINs are the timestamp of when you request the freeze
60*24 = 1440 possibilities. If you guess half these numbers you would expect to crack half the pins.
jooke··on The Subscription App Paradox
These small optimisations are pretty independent though. If you double the number of engineers you can do twice as many of them.
jooke··on Inside Waymo's Secret World for Training Self-Driving Cars
Who's going to buy a car that might tell them they can't drive?
jooke··on Ask a Female Engineer: Thoughts on the Google Memo
The fact that in India and China (very different cultures) there are a lot of female programmers doesn't say anything about cultural influences in the West. Being encouraged to do maths at age 5 is not the norm (regardless of gender).
jooke··on Big brother is here, and his name is Facebook
Having my email or webserver tied to my ISP seems terrible. What happens if I want to switch?
jooke··on MIT team’s school-bus algorithm could save $5M and 1M bus miles
If the police stopped arresting people then criminals would be much more pleased with their work
jooke··on Britain's Forgotten Bike Highways
Even if cars were only used by each person a couple of times a week that's still a massive improvement over commuting everyday. (I also think you're exaggerating, toilet paper can easily fit in a backpack.)
