jonthepirate··on Lyft Files for IPO
Former Lyft eng here of 2.5 yrs.. Lyft is kicking major a. Don't mean to hype it. Even if they weren't IPO'ing I can tell you they are firing on all pistons. I'm pretty sure the financials are in good shape too.

Haven't worked there in 2 years though.

Fingers crossed.

jonthepirate··on SF fines two landords $2.25M for illegal Airbnb rentals
Rather than putting restrictions on what private people can do with their property, I'm starting to think the city should consider bulldozing some of the GG park to put up affordable housing or renting it out for cheap to those who need it where the city of San Francisco would be the landlord.
jonthepirate··on Facebook exodus: Nearly half of young users have deleted the app
I would like to wholesale get it off my phone but I find that other apps require fb login and so I have to reinstall it... I really do not want it on my phone and I also reject their recruiter inquiries every other month too.

Every once in a while I get an alert about a birthday for someone I met once when I was in college 20 years ago... one day I'll figure out how to shut all of that off it's really annoying.

jonthepirate··on Shifting Gears
I worked on Jenkins at Lyft and completely set it up for DoorDash. If anybody needs help with their Jenkins setup, hit me up I give free advice and have a few blog posts on the matter.

If you happen to be using AWS, GitHub, and Slack, we at DoorDash have developed lots of goodies for streamlining things. We have secured our Jenkins behind our VPN, created load balanced Jenkins clusters, built a shared Groovy library for all of the Jenkins behaviors that are useful for each of our microservices, implemented a Flask app that receives each of the GitHub webhooks which starts pipelines instantly (rather than git polling), setup Okta integration, interfaced with our internal secrets store, and implemented a way to map GitHub users to Slack users allowing us to Slack message people when they are mentioned in GitHub (when their PR's receive LGTM's etc.) When new microservices launch, Folders automatically appear in Jenkins configured correctly for the service's pipelines.

If any of this sounds good let me know, maybe we open source some of our work. I love working on Jenkins and am happy to help advise you on how to scale, secure, demystify your own Jenkins setup. Links on my HN profile page.

jonthepirate··on American tech giants are making life tough for startups
I once got a legal threat from facebook when I was setting up an app because I registered a domain to serve my app assets with a name like myappfacebookorigin.com and it said that the word facebook is famous and I need to cease and desist. I wish they had paid me back for the domain or forced the registrars to warn me I would get legal threats for using their trademarked name.
jonthepirate··on Tempe Police Release Video of Uber Accident
Does anybody really think its a good idea for Lyft, Uber, Tesla etc to develop safety systems for the open roads separately in isolation? Who benefits from that?!

I'll bet a Tesla would not have run this person over. This is where the Government should step in and force all of these AV manufacturers to implement a common safety system / protocol.

jonthepirate··on Self-driving Uber car kills Arizona woman crossing street
Former Lyft eng here. From my vantage point, as an industry, we're nowhere near where we should be on the safety side. The tech companies are developing driving tech privately instead of openly. Why can a private for profit company "test" their systems on the public roads? The public is at serious risk of getting run over by hacked and buggy guidance / decision system. Even when a human operator has his hands hovering 1 inch off the steering wheel and his foot on the brake, if the car decides to gas it and swerve into a person, it is probably too late for the human crash test driver to overtake. This is going to keep happening. The counterargument FOR this is that it is overall a good idea for the transportation system if the number of crashes & deaths is statistically less than human operated cars. I see this as the collision of what's possible with what's feasible and that we are years away from any of this being close to a good idea. :( Very sad for the family and friends.
jonthepirate··on Untangling Jenkins
Rather than run monolithic Jenkins with a kagillion jobs in it that will easily bog down, you could consider running distributed Jenkins in which each team, or even each microservice, gets its own Jenkins Cluster with a small number of slaves and a small number of jobs. See my earlier post in this thread where I posted a YouTube video of the method I use for doing this using a CloudFormation template.

Also, when you say that your developers don't understand groovy, you could teach them how to ding make targets inside of their docker containers. That's the pattern we use at DoorDash... very minimal Jenkins scripting which exists to ding make targets inside Docker images.

Here's a preview of what I'm working on that I just published to YouTube:

I'd love to hear more about what problems any of you are facing with Jenkins so I can be sure to address them in the work I'm doing.

jonthepirate··on Untangling Jenkins
I am spearheading an effort to release a CloudFormation template that will launch Jenkins clusters into your AWS account. It represents everything learned while working with Jenkins for over 6 years including 2.5 years of Jenkins at Lyft and 1 year at DoorDash. If you would like to collaborate, please contact block.jon@gmail.com. The project was written with an eye towards making the launching of a Jenkins cluster very very easy. It's designed with Docker workloads in mind. Some of the gems include autoscaling, instrumentation & metrics, automatic Let's Encrypt certificate registration, GitHub webhook integration and retries during pipeline slave disconnects which makes spot instances viable even when they abruptly go away... something that saves you 75%!! on your AWS instance costs.
jonthepirate··on High-Level Problems with Git and How to Fix Them
In practice I have found the biggest missing feature that I wish existed is the ability to pull a single file from a known ref on a remote server. For example, give me the Dockerfile located in the root of the master branch tip. Can't do that. Instead, you have to clone the entire repo first.

My office got a call on a great deal for a renewal on our subscription and our new pricing .. and our sales rep would give us a good deal since we had a subscription for a while... it would only be 2x what it currently was. We cancelled it and went to box. Easy and much happier.
