jonkoops··on Nissan's third generation e-POWER powertrain
Thankfully we're getting close to ~10 mins to go from 10% to 80% charge with newer models. Battery tech is actually advancing very steadily, so it won't be long for this to trickle down to cheaper models either.
jonkoops··on Linux support is coming to Snapdragon X2 series
Unless Qualcomm steps in and makes every laptop with their chip work flawlessly, I don't see a reason to step into their ecosystem. Right now it is basically flipping a coin when you buy an X1 or X2 product, as you are basically locked to the vendor's idea of 'support'. Qualcomm should coerce and collaborate with vendors to ensure their products are synonymous with great Linux support so that when I see their brand I know it is a good product.
jonkoops··on US confirms for first time it has deployed space weapons
Space really should be a neutral ground like Antarctica. Especially since the consequences of space debris might trigger the Kessler effect [1], denying humanity future access to low-earth orbit for the considerable future.

jonkoops··on It took a year to ship WebAssembly in Anubis
I really don't see why you'd disable WebAssembly and allow JavaScript instead. Expecting developers to make a fallback for a baseline-supported feature for any reason but backwards compatibility with runtimes that do not so support WASM is extremely silly.
jonkoops··on Omarchy: 1Password and 37signals become Distinguished Corporate Patrons
1Password can't even include ARM builds of their app in their existing packages [1]. I am highly skeptical of anything DHH (David Heinemeier Hansson) is the benevolent dictator of, and for good reason [2]. Perhaps that money would be spent better elsewhere in the ecosystem.

jonkoops··on Iceland votes on whether to restart talks on joining EU
They all want a stable currency, though, and the Euro is certainly that. To the point that even non-EU states have started to adopt it over their own.
jonkoops··on Iceland votes on whether to restart talks on joining EU
The new agreement basically being the same thing as being in the EU, and aligning further with EU institutions, without actually having a say.
jonkoops··on Iceland votes on whether to restart talks on joining EU
You clearly have no idea how the EU works; she is the head of the Commission, which is nominated by the Council (27 elected heads of state), and needs to be approved in by the Parliament (directly elected). So sure, yeah, she isn't directly elected, but she still needs a massive amount of multinational political support.

Even then, all the power is in the Commission; the Commission is split in areas (competition, energy, trade, etc.), and each country nominates a commissioner in each area, and the total Commission gets approved once again by democratically elected Parliament. The head of the Commission has only one single vote, and a majority vote decides if anything passes, and even the Parliament has to approve it. That said, I think we all want Parliament to have the ability to propose legislation.

So don't take this ignorant take in here and present it as some kind of dictatorship and a fundamental flaw of the EU that undermines it all; the EU has been a massive positive force for the continent, and people like you just like to shit on it.

jonkoops··on Iceland votes on whether to restart talks on joining EU
The Euro is actually one of the reasons they want to join; even their prime minister stated it explicitly. It would be a more stable currency than their own.
jonkoops··on New EU-wide product repair rules come into force
It really should be required for manufacturers to publish full details about how the hardware works so that alternative software can be developed. I'd wholly support that.
jonkoops··on Canada will match US tariffs 'dollar for dollar' as trade talks break down
There is plenty of gas in the EU; we decided that it was undesirable to extract. Honestly pathetic; strategic autonomy and energy security is much more important.
jonkoops··on Rust SIMD on the GPU
Pretty common for Rust to cook things in nightly for a very long time; I wouldn't consider it a bad thing, tbh.
jonkoops··on Zed DeltaDB
This isn't trying to be a replacement for Git. Maybe read up first?
jonkoops··on Chinese chipmaker shares surge 470%
ASML doesn't make state-of-the-art machines without Cymer. What is your point?
jonkoops··on Chinese chipmaker shares surge 470%
ASML doesn't make chips.
jonkoops··on Chinese chipmaker shares surge 470%
EU chip industry: best I can do is eat glue in the corner.
jonkoops··on Cruller: Bun's Zig Runtime, Continued on Zig 0.16
Same goes for io.js, which got so popular it actually got merged back into Node.js
jonkoops··on Zig Creator Calls Spade a Spade, Anthropic Blows Smoke
> And also he implied he doesn’t even want to engage with anything relating to this since Jarred is toxic and there is no value in the debate.

If he doesn't want to get involved, then why even write this piece?

jonkoops··on Zig Creator Calls Spade a Spade, Anthropic Blows Smoke
What I have been missing in all this debate is substance. I don't care that Bun was ported to Rust; I don't care that Andrew wrote a hit piece about it; I don't care that Anthropic sells shovels in the gold rush.

What I do care about is technical details. Jared shared some motivation as to why they ported to Rust, and I think they look valid (even if provided with sparse evidence). But I have not seen any sort of refutation from Andrew that these are not actually issues or how they should be solved in Zig canonically. I'd really like to see an exploration of these arguments, specifically pertaining to the Zig code as it was written for Bun.

jonkoops··on Should European housing politics be Americanized?
I live in Amsterdam; nobody wants to live in the city center. There are plenty of ways to keep an old city center AND build out the surrounding areas in a way that people actually would like to live there.

We do really need to have a serious conversation about single-family homes; you will even find them right next to metro stations. Some of these low-density neighborhoods really need to be demolished and reconstructed into higher-density housing that can still reasonably house a family.

jonkoops··on Wikipedia Workers to Seek Union Recognition
Ahhh the American mindset.
jonkoops··on Angular v22
Nice
jonkoops··on Angular v22
I believe Signals are the go-to now, but surely RxJS is still present for complex use cases. Are Zones fully gone?
jonkoops··on Domain expertise has always been the real moat
Honestly, this is my experience as well. LLMs make it easier to explore other domains, but they do not make you the master of one; you still need expert domain knowledge.

That said, they do make excellent tools to quickly try out new ideas and dive into them; they can even be great learning accelerators if you have a curious mind.

jonkoops··on EU fines Temu €200M for allowing sale of illegal products
Well, enjoy your plastic toys and clothes that are full of known carcinogens I guess.
jonkoops··on Goodbye Visa and Mastercard: 130M Europeans switching to sovereign payment
> After typing your card numbers

Yes, but the whole point of Wero is that you don't have to type in a bunch of info that can be easily stolen. With Wero (and many other international solutions), you just scan a code with your phone, and your banking app handles the transactions. The existing legacy solutions are just duct tape on an existing system.

jonkoops··on Mini Shai-Hulud Strikes Again: 314 npm Packages Compromised
Another day, another pre/postinstall script executed that could have easily have been prevented by any sane package manager. NPM really desperately needs an 'allowBuilds' style allowlist [1] and 'approve-builds' command [2].

jonkoops··on Belgium stops decommissioning nuclear power plants
Actually, those materials can be MUCH more radioactive in the beginning compared to 'conventional' nuclear waste, the half-life is just so short that you can let them sit for a couple of decades and then deal with it.
jonkoops··on Belgium stops decommissioning nuclear power plants
Why the hell did they build this in a former salt mine with known water intrusion.
jonkoops··on CATL's new LFP battery can charge from 10 to 98% in less than 7 minutes
I sincerely hope Donut really has an ace up their sleeve, we could really use some domestic competition against China here in the EU. I sincerely hope that the next update from them is something solid (pun intended), and not 'what color is the battery'.
