jonfromsf··on Why are most sofas so bad?
Just buy quality used stuff, it is almost free. Facebook marketplace is your friend. That guy with a truck is your other friend.

jonfromsf··on Diversity Hiring 101: Everything You Need to Know in 2023
Definitely written by chatGPT or similar.
jonfromsf··on Teens inundated with phone prompts day and night, research finds
Agreed. The internet is full of sad men who didn't successfully figure out how to talk to girls in high school / college. There's a critical window for learning how to be social that if missed is difficult to recover from, because the lack of confidence and early success quickly causes them to fall even further behind.

Parents shouldn't be so dismissive of teens and their attempts to fit in and be socially normal. It's extremely important, possibly more important than academics.

I don't tip because society says I have to. All right, if someone deserves a tip, if they really put forth an effort, I'll give them something a little something extra. But this tipping automatically, it's for the birds.

Everyone needs to understand probability and statistics maybe 10X better than they currently do. That should be the focus!

Wow I always thought AWS was crazy complicated just like .. because stuff is hard. But you're right, if it's complex enough people define their career identity as an "AWS expert" and at that point you have lock-in for life.
jonfromsf··on AWS staff spending ‘much of their time ’optimizing customers' clouds'
Herzner is way cheaper. But it doesn't have a database service or an S3 analog. Both of those are needed if you want to avoid spending a lot of money on operations staff.
jonfromsf··on Yellen says government will help SVB depositors but rules out bailout
The top four banks are too big to fail and WILL be rescued, as happened in 2008. Bank of America or Citi failing would be the end of America as we know it. That's why everyone will move to the bigger banks. Which is obviously not what we want. But it's what will happen if you leave depositers out to dry because it's a smaller bank.
jonfromsf··on Why are so many young men single and sexless?
Because the best sex toys for men are prostate vibrators.

Yes, a smaller pool of donors. Worst still for finding matches is multi-racial people.
jonfromsf··on Ask HN: How to restore cognition after years of trauma? I feel slow and dumb
This is risky advice. Many (most?) people need social context to create meaning and will get depressed if they don't have a job to do and people relying on them. Look at what happens to people when they retire.
jonfromsf··on Why we picked Java
Is it true that Java isn't slower than Python/Ruby/.Net? What are the fast ORMs and MVC frameworks for it that let you build a web app quickly the way ROR / Django / whatever .net people use?
jonfromsf··on Twitter’s mass layoffs have begun
It seems likely.

My parents used to have a simple approach to traveling on the Greek Islands. They would buy a Lonely Planet Greece guidebook, then go to the dock in Athens and look at the signs for the ferries. They would only go to an island that wasn't listed in the book. Worked like a charm for years and years.
jonfromsf··on What's the deal with all those weird wrong-number texts?
These are "pig butchering scams" run out of China. https://www.rrstar.com/story/business/2022/04/30/new-pig-but...

They befriend lonely people (usually men) and slowly draw them into a crypto scam. It's a long con, takes a few months.

jonfromsf··on Women are nearly half of new gun buyers, study finds
Haven't the Taliban just taught us a 20-year lesson on how some guys with rifles and pickup trucks can humiliate a superpower? Low intensity warfare isn't about winning battles but disrupting governance. The guns in US citizens hands would easily be enough to disrupt governance in rural areas.
jonfromsf··on The STEM Crisis Is a Myth (2013)
He's talking about public stock which is liquid (hence the reference to FAANG). Obviously private equity is very hard to sell and not comparable.

jonfromsf··on Inside Facebook's Data Wars
There isn't one anymore. It's one of the great tragedies of the last several years of hyper-polarization.
jonfromsf··on ProPublica's tax story
NO. If the rich person dies the value steps up on inheritance, And nobody pays capital gains tax. (Although they do pay inheritance tax, which basically makes the most sense when thought of as a stopgap measure to plug this loophole.)
