joncrane··on Inside CECOT – 60 Minutes [video]
>is it that they're in on the grift and everyone understands that she's just there as a wink-wink-totaly-not state censor, or do they genuinely fall for her schtick?

It's both. That's one of the things that's difficult to suss out and therefore have a plan to engage. There's plausible deniability on both ends of that spectrum. Even in the high positions in the administration, there's a smattering of True Believers in amongst the grifters.

joncrane··on NTP at NIST Boulder Has Lost Power
Gaithersburg went down on December 8th, is there confirmation that it's fully functional again?
joncrane··on How getting richer made teenagers less free
I feel like there's a sweet spot of wealth that is generationally sustainable, which I would say is in the middle and upper-middle class brackets. Just like with any human activity, the amount of work required for the payoff has to be in the sweet spot. Too rich, and not enough work is required for the offspring to stay engaged enough to surmount the hurdles all human face. Too poor and the opportunities just aren't there.

To be fair, one of the reasons for the decrease in crime may be the steps taken by average people to minimize it, due to anxiety.
joncrane··on Tell HN: HN was down
Thank you. I was thinking myself or my corporate IP was shadowbanned
joncrane··on The "Mad Men" in 4K on HBO Max Debacle
Hypothesis:

They were set up to shoot that scene that day and they were on a tight schedule. They started to set up and they realized they only had 12 feet of hose, or that the pressure dropped too much with a longer length of hose. They discussed all the options, and fixing it physically would take too long or be too expensive. Thus another "we'll fix it in post!" moment was born.

joncrane··on I DM'd a Korean presidential candidate and ended up building his core campaign
I thought this was a fascinating story. Also cool to see the technical details like AWS in there.
joncrane··on Gymkhana's 1978 Subaru Brat with 9,500-RPM Redline, Active Aero
Nearly impossible. For the same price and effort, you can probably get a high end Porsche 911 or similar which will be way more practical.

The next level up would be to get a modified car from a company that has very strong ties to the manufacturer, such as Ruf with Porsche, Roush or Saleen with Ford Mustangs, etc.

Trust me either of those options will be more than anyone but the 1% top skilled or thrill seeking individuals can handle.

joncrane··on Laptops with Stickers
OK, that is awesome.

"— yes, that one."

? Who is this person?

joncrane··on Why does Swiss cheese have holes?
I love that the first sentence of the article has the simple answer, and as you read more, you get more detail. The opposite of the "click bait" trend.
joncrane··on Egg prices vs. Consumer Price Index since 1980
This. How do you harvest/refresh the compost though? Just move the cage over? Do you kind of suspend the cage a bit and let the little stuff fall through?
joncrane··on Subprime Lender PrimaLend Enters Bankruptcy After Bond Default
Does someone have a non-paywalled version of that article?
joncrane··on AWS multiple services outage in us-east-1
It's also about latency and nearness to users. Also some regions don't have all features so feature set also matters.
joncrane··on AWS multiple services outage in us-east-1
>You will see more sales people hoovering around your c-suites and executives, while you will face even worse technical support, that seem not knowing what they are talking about, yet alone to fix the support issue you expect to be fixed easily.

WILL see? We've been seeing this since 2019.

joncrane··on AWS multiple services outage in us-east-1
What services are only available in us-east-1?

Which is interesting because per their health dashboard,

joncrane··on How to Lead in a Room Full of Experts
The post that this thread is replying to uses the phrase "know it all" and it's pretty obvious what OP meant.

The person kvetching at you about not understanding threading is making a joke because there's also a process called "eyebrow threading."

HN is supposed to be high quality discourse and you have to be on your toes if you want to participate!

Missing context, and missing references, and doubling down when you're called out is NOT the optimal strategy.

joncrane··on Weather Radar APIs in 2025: A Founder's Complete Market Overview
I use weather underground in the Eastern US but I'd love to know if there's a better app.

I also use RadarScope but that's more to see the intensity of nearby rain cells and try to guess for myself their movement and evolution

joncrane··on So you're a manager now
> I often find, aside from exceptional cases, most of them actually have some part of the job they prefer & are good at, so modifying the task allocation can go a long way.

While this works in the short/naive scenario, I feel like in most cases these low performers prefer the "gravy" work if you will. The type of work that almost everyone prefers and is good at. So you risk setting a bad precedent for perverse incentives by rewarding poor performance with easier work.

joncrane··on US AI Action Plan
I may be extrapolating here, but the part in the comment you're replying to that says

>so if the government bureaucrats are too slow

I wonder if there are certain types of names that make the bureaucrats work more slowly.

joncrane··on GLP-1s are breaking life insurance
I believe you 100%. I have a history of substance abuse with bad consequences. I quit alcohol and now my drug is food. People tell me I'm a "supertaster." I can taste many of the ingredients in my food that others can't.

I also have BPD and am in therapy for it, but man. Food is the drug that always works. When I get into a certain mode, it's like I don't care that I'm overweight and have high blood pressure. I just crave the deliciousness and the "full feeling." And it never fails to work! I always feel more calm and happy after I eat.

joncrane··on Adipose tissue retains an epigenetic memory of obesity after weight loss
This is interesting because about 20 or so years ago when I was super into bodybuilding, you couldn't talk about a "cycle" on a bodybuilding forum without talking about a "post cycle protocol."

I know that's different than permanent TRT but I feel like you couldn't get very far researching that stuff without understanding that you natural test production (and sperm production) would get "shut down" as soon as you started adding exogenous androgens.

joncrane··on Amazon’s delivery drones are grounded in College Station, Texas
I think many of these folks like the idea of drone delivery as long as it's not THEIR house next to the droneport
