jonbishop··on Customer Marketing Research Kit
Hey all, here’s a free toolkit for customer marketing research (16-pages, 5 tools like email templates).

You'll get future updates with the link above (just updates, no spam), but here's a direct download link, no email needed (it's hosted on mailchimp so the URL looks a bit weird): https://mcusercontent.com/9be143cbbb22f415980fa9074/files/71...

I originally wrote it for marketers, but decided to translate it for more of a technical audience, so let me know if anything doesn't make sense.

jonbishop··on Launch HN: Flow Club (YC S21) – Virtual co-working space for focused work
I've done 4 Flow Club sessions and have really enjoyed it.

I get the folks saying they'd be distracted and I thought the camera would throw me off (and you can turn it off if you want), but I got used to it right away and have been pretty productive during my sessions.

I'm working solo from home, so having others there has been energizing.

The people in my sessions seem to most commonly use Flow Club to get through work that they don't want to do or something they've been putting off.

jonbishop··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (November 2018)
California Dreamin' (YC W18) | Marketing Manager, Operations Associate | San Francisco, CA | ONSITE

We’re California Dreamin’ and we’re introducing the mainstream to cannabis beverages with our California Dreamin’ line of low dose, all natural cannabis sodas.

We believe that the future of cannabis consumption is through beverages and that the current market of heavily dosed edible products (think 100mg drinks and 1000mg cookies) only serves a small segment of the potential mainstream market.

About the product: California Dreamin’ is a delicious all natural cannabis soda being distributed across California through our retail partners. Made simply of fruit juice, cannabis, and carbonation, our drinks are carefully crafted to give you a light social high. California Dreamin’ is the first product line and brand of many that we plan to produce.

jonbishop··on Launch HN: Shogun (YC W18) – Storefront Builder for ECommerce Sites
I’m a Shogun fan. I was on a tight deadline to design, build, and launch our new site on Shopify. Designing a new site is enough work without introducing new functionality through apps you’ve never used before, especially in the time frame I had. Not the recommended way to do things with so many ways it could go wrong, but this was just the situation.

Shogun was an important factor in me hitting the deadline as it was very easy to learn and build with. There are a lot of page builders out there, and many hit a solid level of functionality, so it can hard to describe why Shogun is better.

For me, the difference is the speed that I can build a good design at. The UI, prebuilt templates, and backend speed all helped me move faster than with other page builders. While I haven’t used their support, a lot of their reviews on Shopify talk about how good it is (one reason I decided to take a look at the app)

jonbishop··on Airbnb open-sources Caravel: data exploration and visualization platform
Hey! I run marketing for Periscope Data, a data explorer/dashboard product. We have a lot of customers using postgres and get compared to Looker a lot. We focus on optimizing for the analyst whereas tools like Looker focus on business users. We have a lot of features for business users, but chart creation is all SQL based.

Our site is here: https://www.periscopedata.com/ and if you have any questions, shoot me an email at jon@periscopedata.com.

jonbishop··on Landlords are trying not to rent to startups in San Francisco
"A Yelp spokesperson told Re/code that to combat the hiring problems it has plans to hire people in other offices across the country."

They're not opening up new offices, they're looking to hire where they already have offices like New York and Phoenix.

jonbishop··on Building Analytics at 500px
Hey Zack, it’s probably a good idea to disclose that you work at Looker if you’re going to talk about them on HN. https://www.linkedin.com/profile/view?id=145490726

I run marketing for Periscope. Like Chartio, you guys have a great product. We routinely send people your way when they have more business user needs and aren’t a good fit for Periscope.

For those evaluating tools like Periscope/Looker/Chartio:

Whereas Looker focuses on business users, we’ve built Periscope around serving SQL analysts better than anyone else.

If you don't have someone who knows SQL on your team, Looker (or Chartio) is probably a better fit. (though I should mention that some customers have learned SQL through our customer support :)

We’re focused on the SQL analysts who are building dashboards and running reports, day in, day out. With that said, every one of our customers has employees who don’t know SQL, but need to dive into their data. So we’ve built a ton of features to make this easy as well.

If you want to find out more, visit https://www.periscope.io. If Periscope looks like a good fit, sign up and we'll get you set up with a free trial.

jonbishop··on In Search of the Red Cross' $500M in Haiti Relief
I second the Watsi recommendation. The combination of their transparency, their 100% donation distribution, and clearly showing me who gets my money/what they get it for has made me comfortable giving to a non-local charity for the first time in years.
jonbishop··on Yahoo Pipes End-Of-life Announcement
Haha, I loved that search results pipe! The product was amazing at the time. It's really too bad that Yahoo didn't try to make something more out of it.
jonbishop··on Stripe and Pinterest
It doesn't make sense and wouldn't for a while. I don't think the potential would justify the market overlap, the work surrounding an acquisition of that size, and the risk of pissing off other large partners that Pinterest needs right now. Pinterest is still in the very early stages of monetizing and I'd imagine they want to get the current stuff right first.
jonbishop··on Stripe and Pinterest
Not going to happen. Etsy has a market cap of 1.79B[1] whereas Pinterest was valued at 11B in it's last funding round[2].

jonbishop··on Singapore's startup scene
Yes, US citizens have to pay tax no matter where they live. You may be eligible for the Foreign Tax Credit[1] or, even better, the Foreign Earned Income Exclusion[2], though. For 2015, you can exclude up to $100,800 of your earnings with the Foreign Earned Income Exclusion, which will cover most if not all of your salary (for the majority of people).

jonbishop··on Show HN: The Lazy Analyst's Guide to Faster SQL
It's focused on Postgres and Redshift SQL. We'll be expanding this out to other SQL databases for future versions. Will add that to the landing page!
jonbishop··on Show HN: The Lazy Analyst's Guide to Faster SQL
With our product (Periscope), you type SQL and get charts from your SQL database. We spend a lot of time helping customers with their SQL queries and also write a lot about SQL on our blog. So we thought it'd be a good idea to put together a free guide on writing faster queries. Hope you enjoy it!

jonbishop··on Want a Chance at the Best Startups? Go Beyond the Resume
If you've been visiting HN for a while, you'll probably recognize most of my examples of out-of-the-box resumes. It's been a while for some of them, but they all got a lot of attention here when they were produced.

I just started looking for a job in the Bay Area and decided to go the extra mile to increase my chances of getting the job I want.

The examples I included were part of my inspiration for creating the SaaS growth course I made to help me with the job search.

jonbishop··on Ask HN: Are EMBA programs worth it?
I don't have one, but I can tell you that it completely depends on your unique situation. Can you provide more details to help people answer the question?

What industry/product are you looking at? What type position (dev, design, business) do you have or want to have? If you're currently employed, does the company prefer it for you to move up? Are you looking to learn or just add to your resume (or in between)?

One major reason (some of my friends with MBAs from top schools say the only reason) to get an MBA is for the network. With an EMBA, you don't spend as much time around other students as you do with an MBA, so you don't get a chance to build as strong as a network.

jonbishop··on Ask HN: Good countries for American expats
Great advice. I moved to Thailand last year by myself (and moved back in March). I absolutely loved Thailand, but there many stressful times trying to get things set up. I had a good friend already there (American who spoke some Thai), which helped immensely, but he was around only so much to help.

One of my funnier memories was getting set up for Internet. After I waited for a rep who could speak English well enough to help, I sat down and got her pitch for a 6 month up front payment deal.

I listened politely and when she was finished talking about the extras I'd get, I thanked her and declined the offer. Then she said that they require all foreigners to pay 6 months up front.

"Oh, well in that case I'll take the 6 month deal"

jonbishop··on IAC Said to Buy More Tinder Shares at $5B Valuation
Not saying a 5B valuation makes sense, but I think Tinder is employing the thin edge of the wedge strategy [1] (like Instagram did with photos) and is using their huge success with dating to become a more generic social network.

They've already been public with vague plans to move beyond dating. Also, their new verified accounts for celebrities make a lot more sense with a generic social network than with a dating app.

jonbishop··on KISSmetrics' Guide to SaaS Pricing
"I think the important thing early on is to set expectations"

Agree 100%. Overall, people don't like things taken away from them, but if you set expectations up front, they tend to take change better.

jonbishop··on How to find a marketing person?
This post is pretty light on information. Definitely need more to make a good recommendation. Just like there are different types of developers (different languages, different areas of the stack, etc.), there are different types of marketers. It really depends on your specific needs. I'm happy to answer any questions about finding a good marketer (I have 9 years of marketing experience). My email is in my profile.
