jonbaer··on ELIZA Reanimated: Restoring the Mother of All Chatbots
Well back then you had to be (think) original in fooling a human, and many bots made sure NOT to include copyright material. Also many of them were run locally (and in memory), so they ran faster and without the need for GPU memory (not to mention GPUs/CUDA were not readily available - or available at all - either).
jonbaer··on ELIZA Reanimated: Restoring the Mother of All Chatbots
We developed ALICE and AIML (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Artificial_Intelligence_Markup...) as a way to program bots (some of my work included adding scripting and a learning mechanism), at the time it was open sourced but AOL literally threw it into it's AIM service at certain points. There were plenty of "connectors" for different services, but the real ironic bit was that there was a central Graphmaster class which was extremely memory intensive. This was all before AWS and Cloud.

jonbaer··on The Era of 1-bit LLMs: ternary parameters for cost-effective computing
I really can't tell but it seems to be a continuation of this work if I read the To-Dos correctly, what do you think? Here it seems to be 1-bit on just the transformer, https://huggingface.co/shi3z/BitNetWikipedia110M

jonbaer··on Deepmind Alphadev: Faster sorting algorithms discovered using deep RL
"AlphaDev uncovered new sorting algorithms that led to improvements in the LLVM libc++ sorting library that were up to 70% faster for shorter sequences and about 1.7% faster for sequences exceeding 250,000 elements."

There has also been some work to establish a geospatial intelligence class using the game engine as well (map/market/resource analysis).

jonbaer··on Real-time quantum error correction beyond break-even
"In this work, we used real-time error correction to real- ize a fully stabilized logical qubit whose lifetime is more than doubled compared to the best passive qubit encod- ing in the system, marking the transition of QEC from proof-of-principle studies to a practical tool for enhancing quantum memories."
jonbaer··on U.S. and China wage war beneath the waves over internet cables
"Chinese scientists have developed a high-speed quantum key distribution (QKD) system to generate secret keys at a rate exceeding 110 Mb/s over a 10 km standard optical fiber, setting a new world record in the field."

jonbaer··on ChatGPT won’t replace search engines any time soon
For any chatbot I will ask only 2 questions, one is about myself (since I placed an easter egg in software AOL took and used back in the day) and what time is it? ChatGPT thankfully may or may not be connected to the internet @ prompt but that is usually a good giveaway. IMO Google blew it when they took away Google via SMS, this is the hole ChatGPT(x) can fill.
jonbaer··on DocArray: a data structure for unstructured data

jonbaer··on Disney+ releases its first AR-enabled short film
"Viewers are meant to keep the app open while they watch the film. The AR app listens to audio cues by leveraging Apple’s ShazamKit technology. When it recognizes a key piece of audio around three minutes in, the device will chime, alerting users to hold up their phone and point it at their TV. A 10-second countdown then begins ahead of the AR experience."

jonbaer··on Build, gather, brawl, repeat: The history of real-time strategy games (2017)
I still feel like 0AD (https://play0ad.com) moves at just the right speed and isn't as chaotic as everything else. With the source open, soundtrack/art/etc, it's really a more relaxing play, especially when you find the right opening play/map/options.
jonbaer··on DeepMind AI learns simple physics like a baby
Looking at the photo I don't think the AI is going to realize eating the piece it is about to pick up and it will choke. I would actually like to see more reinforcement learning agents like that, the action space on infant movement is quite small so it's even really about "action space discovery" to some point. Things it discovers are way more interesting, like if food were not on the floor/level and it has to stand to get it, it will eventually get there after N attempts (over time), and then if you introduce another agent if learning to block the other agent will award more food, etc, then it discovers 50/50 and equilibriums (better to eat now than wait). PLATO seems like a step in that direction.

jonbaer··on Battleship
There are a few gyms for battleship, https://github.com/thomashirtz/gym-battleship ... some variations I would like to see involve a much bigger grid (100x100) and moving ships along axis @ various rates ... but then you would get a different game I guess.
