jonathantf2··on Nothing to watch – Experimental gallery visualizing 50k film posters
Estimated my work laptop as "high end" and then Edge crashed.
jonathantf2··on Wikimedia Foundation Challenges UK Online Safety Act Regulations
I'm surprised they haven't deployed a big banner à la Jimmy Wales begging for donations to UK users re this law yet
jonathantf2··on VPN use surges in UK as new online safety rules kick in
I'm not sure I've ever seen a petition on that website with a positive outcome.
jonathantf2··on Users claim Discord's age verification can be tricked with video game characters
B-but... if we have an ID card the "government" will be able to track us! /s It does annoy me how much people get away with scaremongering, I just read a comment of someone who's against digital payments because "then the government will be able to work out how much tax you owe"????
jonathantf2··on UK: Phone networks down: EE, BT, Three, Vodafone, O2 not working in mass outage
Tis what I meant - I have an EE MVNO SIM but originally an O2 number and I can recieve calls just fine.
jonathantf2··on UK: Phone networks down: EE, BT, Three, Vodafone, O2 not working in mass outage
It's just inbound calls to EE numbers (so if you've ported in you're not affected)
jonathantf2··on Gmail's backup codes are useless to access account
EXO or on-prem? We see a lot of authentication errors and sync issues, so much so that we block the "Apple Internet Accounts" EA since it stops the users from adding it in the first place on tenants we manage.

One particular well documented issue that first cropped up about 5 years ago that I still see to this day is the spam of calendar invite acceptance e-mails (so much spam that the user gets outbound blocked). Only happens if the user accepts a calendar invite using the iOS calendar client, MS couldn't identify an issue and Apple didn't wanna hear about it.

jonathantf2··on Gmail's backup codes are useless to access account
From all my years working in IT I've never had a good experience with the iOS/macOS mail app for either Exchange or Gmail, things break constantly. You're much better off using the proper Gmail or Outlook app.
jonathantf2··on My bank keeps on undermining anti-phishing education
My bank don't have an EV, they have just a plan Amazon cert.
jonathantf2··on My bank keeps on undermining anti-phishing education
True - but if browsers don't show the EV cert until I click 3 buttons and my bank don't use one is there really a point?

> "The SSL certification is from Let’s Encrypt and not from one of the major root CAs"

This is NOT a reason to distrust a website.

jonathantf2··on My Cord-Cutting Adventure (2020)
Even at a distance it should be okay, sounds more like a peering/bandwidth issue between your ISP and his

I can wholeheartedly recommend an HDHR and Channels DVR (https://getchannels.com/dvr-server/), I've found it to be parent proof. Run a Docker container on a low powered PC somewhere and then install the apps on Apple TV or Chromecast. Job done, provides a Sky Q like experience for like £5 a month?
jonathantf2··on U.S. sanctions cloud provider 'Funnull' as top source of 'pig butchering' scams
Our provider don't support toll free numbers - so we can dial out using ours even though it's not in the system. Also helpful when you're doing a migration from one platform to another
jonathantf2··on U.S. sanctions cloud provider 'Funnull' as top source of 'pig butchering' scams
I admin the phone system for my phone company, for any user I can change the outgoing CLI to be literally any number in the world, I can even call out as "1" if I want to.
jonathantf2··on O2 VoLTE: locating any customer with a phone call
I’m not sure how O2 are still in business - they’re the worst network by far, even Three with their diabolical backhaul situation is better. Only reason I have an O2 SIM along with my EE one is for Priority tickets/signal inside their venues
jonathantf2··on Three Chapters at Cloudflare: Programmer to CTO to Board of Directors
CF's "Universal SSL" allows you to proxy your site to a web server that only listens on port 80, not very common today but it was back then.
jonathantf2··on Widespread power outage in Spain and Portugal
I was in a Tesco when there was a power outage - the self checkouts all died (and rebooted into a custon Debian based OS with a Chromium front end by the looks of it), but the staffed tills still worked and could accept Chip+PIN but not contactless.
jonathantf2··on Jellyfin as a Spotify alternative
The problem with this is is the same problem I had when I tried to switch to Apple Music, the network effect. I can't see my friend's playlists, work on collaborative ones, have automatic "blends" with friends etc if I have all my music on a JF server.
jonathantf2··on TLS certificate lifetimes will officially reduce to 47 days
A "regular person" won't/can't deal with a server, VPS, anything like that. They'll go to GoDaddy because they saw an advert on the TV for "websites".
jonathantf2··on TLS certificate lifetimes will officially reduce to 47 days
A welcome change if it gives some vendors a kick up the behind to implement ACME.
jonathantf2··on Gmail E2E is as terrible as expected
This is exactly how M365's solution works. Decrypts if the recipient is using MSN or EXO, otherwise punt them to a webpage.

jonathantf2··on I'm the Canadian who was detained by ICE for two weeks
Yeah, the prisons are privately operated. The cynic in me would bet that the agents have some sort of KPI or even kickback from these companies for filling the cells and costing the taxpayer $$$.
jonathantf2··on I'm the Canadian who was detained by ICE for two weeks
Absolutely terrifying. I'm sure it doesn't technically class as "kidnapping" since the law must have some loophole saying they can detain you indefinitely for any reason (or none at all in this case) but it's what I'd call it.
jonathantf2··on RCS texting updates will bring end-to-end encryption to green bubble chats
As in standard, non-encrypted RCS. Because it relies on carrier support as opposed to on Android where it just works
jonathantf2··on RCS texting updates will bring end-to-end encryption to green bubble chats
Still can't use it on my iPhone though...
jonathantf2··on Tesla created secret team to suppress driving range complaints (2023)
I had an issue with my Toyota where it was making a really loud rattling noise before a big drive I had planned the next day - called a local garage and dropped it off an hour later, got it back end of the day.
jonathantf2··on Revolt: Open-Source Alternative to Discord
Interestingly (and sadly) the largest deployment of this was probably on Andrew Tate's grift course website thing, see the dev's blog: https://insrt.uk/post/andrew-tate-stealing-software-revolt
