jonas_kgomo··on I'm Peter Roberts, immigration attorney who does work for YC and startups. AMA
Why is it so hard to get hired if you aren't in the US. Most positions need to know if you would need VISA help, why is this still a problem even in the remote era? What distinguishes YC companies
jonas_kgomo··on Show HN: I built a gamified forum to help hackers fund each other
Republic[1] kind of approaches this problem, but from a crowdsourced investor point-of-view. The funders don't necessarily have to be founders as well. There is a great incentive to join a community based bootstraping. I think the situation here is that gamification is a tool for collaboration or measurable value, which is a black-box. This is filling a gap for early stage founders that couldnt be achieved with IH. The breaking point might appear when there is a clear disparity between well performing startups and misaligned incentives, ie startups with different KPIs underperforming.

jonas_kgomo··on Unsplash’s dataset is now open source
Maybe this is a stupid idea, but why can't the person uploading photos get paid per API request. I never understood how people are willing to be featured on a website for free. That would generate value for both users and unsplash. Even AI generated photos aren't totally free https://generated.photos/pricing
jonas_kgomo··on Ask HN: How to build a network for Investor-Operator networks?
Thanks exolymph, it's interesting there is no hack for this! I guess this is why it is not easy for Silicon Valley to be distributed, since VC's are saturated there.
jonas_kgomo··on Ask HN: Who wants to be hired? (September 2020)
Location: Europe, Remote: Yes Willing to relocate: Yes Technologies: React JS, GIT, GraphQL, Node.js , and Tailwind CSS email: jonaskgmoo@gmail.com
jonas_kgomo··on Ask HN: Who is looking for co-founders?
yes sir, I am working on affordance[0] which is scaling startups by collaboration of other founders, designers operators and venture capital. Post on IH [1].

jonas_kgomo··on Ask HN: Who is looking for co-founders?
I am looking for a co-founder building a product for scaling startups. I tried IndieHackers Looking For Partner feature but it wasn't successful.
jonas_kgomo··on Ask HN: Geopolitical forums similar to HN?
edge.org has the intellectual capacity of discussing multi-disciplinary issues however not in a forum style. This would be a great addition to the internet
jonas_kgomo··on Ask HN: Resources to start learning about quantum computing?
Resources are quite widespread, if you want a community based learning, IBM's Qiskit[0] is the best. If you are at high-school level, Michael Nielsen's online mnemonic book [1] is good too. Ideally, you want to get a small grasp of basic probability, some physics and algebra. Another community based learning is QWorld [3].

jonas_kgomo··on Using GPT-3 to generate user interfaces
My actual worry about this is 'will I be obsolete as a front-end engineer'. It seems that AI will manage web optimization, and NLP conversational programming, so basically there is no need for a front end engineer. Perhaps I am wrong.
jonas_kgomo··on Bill Proposed to Outlaw End to End Encryption
Does this mean we could no longer use WhatsApp, FaceTime, Signal, and other simple peer-to-peer projects ? Export of cryptography was written for the Cold War but still affects developers today. It wouldn't be a surprise if that is the case since Daniel Bernstein already took a case against US Dept Justice.

jonas_kgomo··on Ask HN: Why can't we solve the app store monopoly problem?
WOW thanks for vouching for him and keeping watch on that.
jonas_kgomo··on [dead]
A new blockchain and smart transaction platform that is more energy efficient, decentralized, and secure. Founded by Bram Cohen of BitTorrent
jonas_kgomo··on Show HN: FoundersList – Looking for a cofounder or a new startup to work on?
We often ignore that your passion, vision, ideals and intimate dreams can be common (shared) between people, often people have the exact same idea at the same time. Making it much easier to start a company, because values naturally align. You can see this when Google and Apple suddenly collaborate even thou they certainly exist as competitors.
jonas_kgomo··on Math is an insurance policy
Interesting. If languages like C and C++ are really first to be vulnerable, why are they the ones used for building AI (computer vision) instead of category theoretic languages?
jonas_kgomo··on Ask HN: How to donate $1k to open source?
@feross published an experiment on funding mechanisms on opensource. https://feross.org/funding-experiment-recap/

My suggestions for now would be BountySource (great for micro-financing on issues) and GitCoin (great for crypto-payments)

jonas_kgomo··on Ask HN: How to donate $1k to open source?
would you welcome a platform that specifically open bounties on issues?
jonas_kgomo··on Google offers certificate to help IT career growth
Great point, so what do you measure as great signal of someone to hire, besides experience?
jonas_kgomo··on Ask HN: Cool stuff that's still completely unregulated?
1. General compute: this will become a big deal as quantum supremacy approaches, with more ability to compute there will be a general consensus in how to deal with individuals with incredible computing power. Since, it is very clear how that can be weaponized.

2. Consequently, companies like Amazon as challenged by Andrew Yang should be regulated upon inspecting their earnings. This might be more common in the future.

jonas_kgomo··on Google contractors reportedly targeted homeless people for facial recognition
This is too desperate. It seems AI will help in criminalizing and unbiased profiling of people of color, as a person of color it feels really hard to imagine a future where justice is done with due diligence.

Joy at Media Lab has been looking at this issue for a while and advocating for balance. https://www.technologyreview.com/s/612775/algorithms-crimina...

Also I find it weird that Nvidia was able to simulate realisticly looking people last year, and Google is struggling to find humans, can't they use that as ground-truth?

jonas_kgomo··on Ask HN: What is key to good technical documentation?
Google launched a project this year called Season Of Docs, match-making technical documentation with open source projects. What could be interesting is offering Technical Documentation as a Service (TDaaS)
jonas_kgomo··on Mathematician Wins $3M Prize for 'Magic Wand Theorem'
This over-simplification of the theorem made me think of the theory of Light Field History. In the 15th Century, Leornado Da Vinci noted "The air is full of an infinite number of radiant pyramids". Later Michael Faraday gave his “Thoughts on Ray Vibrations”, His ideas were intended to do away with the ether in favor of lines connecting the particles; light being the vibrations of these lines or rays.Today we know it "light field' as consisting of the total of all light rays in 3D space, flowing through every point and in every direction.
jonas_kgomo··on Scale (YC S16) Raises $100M from Accel and Founders Fund at $1B Valuation
I used to train AI to help researchers find more relevant papers at http://iris.ai This was nothing more than just classifying. Would this kind of opportunity be available for data remotaskers at Scale. Best regards for groundbreaking work
jonas_kgomo··on On QRAM- Joe Fitzsimons
Quantum RAM is known to be the holy-grail of NISQ era quantum computers. Almost all machine learning speedups are predicated on having an existing qRAM. It seems whoever would be the first one to have a working patent is likely to be a billionaire. I am wondering if some highly lucrative companies like Google X could be building such a chip. People always fabricate FGPA's, why is it hard to do a qRAM as an FGPA.
jonas_kgomo··on FaceApp Now Owns Access to More Than 150M People's Faces and Names
Solid is a MIT project aiming to improve privacy and data ownership, founded with Prof. Tim Berners-Lee, inventor of the World Wide Web. Perhaps this kind of initiatives and blockchain will remind people what valuable data they are sharing.

Information Economy should directly incentivize those who share their identity, I couldnt imagine some stanger in the street asking me for all this information, and me giving it without a doubt. It is scary but it's normalized.

jonas_kgomo··on Adventures Building a Self-Driving RC Car
George Hotz, former apple device jail-breaker left Tesla to start working on Self-Driving Cars, the DIY approach. So far he has been training the cars with HD Maps and has had decent progress considering his competition. http://comma.ai
jonas_kgomo··on Ancient life awakens amid thawing ice caps and permafrost
Isolated cases of permafrost thawing outbreaks can scale into an epidemic black swan. For example, Canadian permafrost thawed 70 years earlier than predicted https://t.co/Lmc8x9IP6T
jonas_kgomo··on Deutsche Bank axes whole teams in Asia-Pacific as job cuts begin
This is happening while most anticipate AI taking jobs. I wonder how this will turn out as more jobs are being automated with human-assisted downsizing
jonas_kgomo··on Timeline of Slack’s Tech Stack Evolution
I find it weird that slack has this unintuitive way of signing into my workspaces, that user experience made me stay away as much as possible. I don't know why they don't make it easy to stay, harder to leave!
jonas_kgomo··on A New Law to Describe Quantum Computing’s Rise?
I always thought that the "ultimate laptop" , in other words nature, has a fundamental limit of computation due to entropy as Seth Lloyd prescribed. So we know Moore's Law isn't dead yet, crowning terms like Nevin's will create a stream of self-ordained Laws , and this will not help at all. I think it is more important to be contrarian, and be against quantum computing like Gil Kalai than push a Moore's Law narrative on mesoscopic materials. I would go against any effort to create a theory of exponentiation . I think this is such a weak paradigm since we haven't yet even figured out what a classical quantum computer would do. In a sense, quantum computing needs an upper bound due to its computational complexity rather than anticipated supremacy. https://www.quantamagazine.org/gil-kalais-argument-against-q...
