jon_adler··on File transfers via the parallel port on DOS using LapLink
Kermit, xmodem, ymodem and zmodem were all file transfer protocols, often used to transfer files on bulletin board systems (BBS).
jon_adler··on Mystery GPS Tracker on a Supporter’s Car
I also ran through most of the modem speeds. All the lower speeds were calls made to BBSs, pre internet. 1200, 2400, 9600, 14400, 28800, 33600…
jon_adler··on Running Cross-Account Workflows with AWS Step Functions and Amazon API Gateway
It is great for large, asynchronous, parallelised processing jobs. I’ve used it to integrate and orchestrate with numerous services within AWS ecosystem. We use source control for the step function JSON and deploy with terraform.
jon_adler··on A magical AWS serverless developer experience
I think he is saying that each developer have their own environment with full production like architecture. There are benefits to having each developer running in their own sandbox, with full freedom to deploy breaking changes at any time. Besides storage, costs are usually 100% variable based on use. Each developer may not have a full replica of production data, as with TBs of data, storage cost might get expensive. Many serverless designs are impervious to the size of dataset, with sharding and auto-scaling, so the performance and scalability risks of running a subset of production data during development are typically minimal.
jon_adler··on Show HN: Container registry on a budget using AWS S3
Perhaps container vulnerability scanning? That’s probably a showstopper for most large customers.
jon_adler··on Facebook loses users for the first time
I don’t think so. Android, Gmail, Maps, Chromebook…
jon_adler··on The 100 MHz 6502
This sounds similar to how the 8088 XT motherboards could be toggled with a turbo button on the front of the case.
jon_adler··on Generic CRC algorithm generator, from Mark Adler
As someone who shares the same surname, always being at the top of the list was somewhat less desirable during school.
jon_adler··on pfSense CE 2.5.2
I’m very happy with my Proxmox x86 host running OpenWRT x86 in a container. It works beautify. I love how fast it is to take a backup/snapshot to try out new configurations and rollback in case of issues. The same host runs plenty of other services like home assistant.

I had pfSense working before OpenWRT but wanted wireguard so I made the switch.

jon_adler··on Fortran adds conditional expressions
Fortean is still very popular in the scientific community for numeric processing. For example, many nuclear simulations run on fortran.
jon_adler··on The collapse of the IRON stable coin
Yes, and the government demands that taxes be paid in it, so there will always be some demand.
jon_adler··on Limiting Work in Progress (2020)
I find the SAFe framework describes the brilliance of Kanban nicely [1]. I’m surprised there isn’t some discussion on queuing theory such as Little’s Law [2] either, as I feel it is also relevant.

jon_adler··on Google is about to launch a Gmail Web Redesign
You can customise your Fastmail spam filtering if needed, however after 15 years of Fastmail email, I still get virtual zero spam.
jon_adler··on Credit Card Signatures Are About to Become Extinct in the U.S
The European payment industry is adopting secure customer authentication in the form of 3DS2.1.
jon_adler··on How much money do people need to be happy?
I believe it would only be possible to maintain yourself as a backpacker on $100 per day. This might be lower in the bush but true in most urban locations in Australia.
jon_adler··on The Problem with Using HackerRank as a Programmer Screening Tool
I would contend that HackerRank has done a good job of screening and filtering on this occasion. Given clear instruction, the only skill demonstrated was insubordination.
jon_adler··on 3D crosswalk in Iceland helps slow down speeding motorists
In the UK, we have "New Layout Ahead" signs everywhere. Once erected, they seem to stay in place forever and increase noise. Is there any evidence that these are beneficial?
jon_adler··on Global Mutable State
We are investigating using Scala and Akka (using actors) for concurrent processing. No locks are needed...
jon_adler··on It appears my Google account is slated for deletion
I am still happy after 15 years of paying for Fastmail.
jon_adler··on Is Every Speed Limit Too Low?
There is evieence that removing safety devices reduces speeds. Drivers compensate to the conditions. I found this article interesting: https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2016/feb/04/remova...
