jon_adler··on ADSL works over wet string (2017)
A small world. I checked out his site and discovered I worked with his wife. He’s the Finch in Coleman Finch. Rachel is you are reading this, Hi! Hope you are well.
jon_adler··on Most of Europe is glowing pink under the aurora
Similar for me down south too (Cambridge). My first sighting and it is superb.
jon_adler··on Don't bet on the joys of pokies (2011)
Sad to discover that the (reasonable) reforms were quickly scuppered.

jon_adler··on Embezzlers Are Nice People (2017)
Reading the article, I just kept thinking of Donald Trump (as a “smart” embezzler).
jon_adler··on Bay Area workers charged for building secret apartments inside train stations
Possession of illegal firearms is a significant crime in the UK. He was accused and convicted of possessing a home made pipe gun found near the bunker. He denies it was his weapon. He wasn’t jailed for the bunker.
jon_adler··on Adventures Making Vegemite
This Aussie expat is very thankful for our local Tesco always having Vegemite stock. They also stock Bundaberg Ginger Beer (try it if you haven’t, another Aussie favourite).
jon_adler··on Webb and Hubble confirm Universe's expansion rate
Thank you. This series of videos is extremely helpful for understanding the concepts referred to in the article.

jon_adler··on Dad died in 2022. Since 2023, things he selfhosted have slowly begun breaking
My first thought too. Then I wondered how long it would be before scammers used a similar approach to try and get free hacking services from unsuspecting people. Sigh.
jon_adler··on Ask HN: Software Engineer Certifications That Mean Something?
Many cloud concepts are transferable to the other vendors cloud platforms. If you are using AWS, you’ll find it easiest to start with learning that.
jon_adler··on Ask HN: Easiest way to create a CRUD web app in 2024?
Have you considered Power Apps model-driven apps[1]? You may not be interested in a PaaS solution however it is very easy to create a CRUD app from a model!

jon_adler··on Show HN: Daily price tracking for Trader Joe's
Were you aware of, or tempted by https://datasette.io/ for creating your solution?

jon_adler··on Please don't make me use another QR code restaurant menu
1000 CHF notes must be a money launderers dream.
jon_adler··on What's something difficult programmers make look easy?
My brother was given lines to write as a punishment in the early 80s. He wrote a for loop in basic and printed the result. The teacher didn’t know any better and was happy to accept the printout. Assuming he’d typed it all from scratch.
jon_adler··on Post-mortem for last week's incident at Kagi
True, however it also doesn’t impact other users and doesn’t justify reporting an incident on the status page.
jon_adler··on Rolls-royce confirms all of its current engines can run on 100 percent SAF
My car is a BMW 640d from 2016, a sports saloon. Diesel cars are quite popular in Europe.
jon_adler··on TSMC, Bosch, Infineon, NXP to jointly build semiconductor fab in Europe
They require functional safety. Certification can be very expensive and take a long time. What seems old within the consumer electronics market isn’t necessarily old within the automotive industry.
jon_adler··on The underground world of credit card network exploitation
I imagine that the fraud rate in Europe is lower since the introduction of PSD2. This legislation required a combination of 2-factor authentication (3DS2) and transaction analysis to achieve low overall fraud rates.
jon_adler··on Amazon requires services on Fire TV to give it 30% of ad impressions or revenue
It removes an attack vector and thereby increases device security?
jon_adler··on Emacs 29.1
Python is an interesting example to choose as a negative example. I presume you are referring to the evolution from v2 to v3. The popularity of Python has exploded in recent years, possibly as a direct consequence of tough decisions and breaking backward compatibility. I guess it is a subjective topic and an individuals position depends on how they define success.
jon_adler··on Emacs 29.1
No an eMacs user myself, but do you ever imagine a time when the software might be considered “done”?
jon_adler··on Wavy walls use fewer bricks than a straight wall (2020)
Anecdotally, I would say that flint stone walls are more common than wavy walls. I’ve see plenty of the former and none of the latter wham driving through the county.
jon_adler··on Apple says it'll remove iMessage and FaceTime in UK rather than break encryption
Isn’t a warrant required in advance to place the recording device? Many unencrypted messages will be recorded automatically and be retrievable indefinitely.
jon_adler··on Chiptune.app
I really enjoyed the Xtree Gold vibes of the website. I used to own a Gravis Ultrasound back in the day, and this UI and music took me back there.
jon_adler··on Tell HN: Nearly all of Evernote’s remaining staff has been laid off
Fastmail is an excellent example of a very reliable, slow changing product with a consistent price. I’ve been a subscriber for over 20 years, and I’m thrilled that it hardly ever changes in perceptible ways and just does it’s job. In more recent years, they have started to introduce some changes but seem very careful about it.
jon_adler··on Terrible real estate agent photographs
This is probably because in London, the flat will rent in a few days anyway. There isn’t any incentive for relatable agents to try any harder.
jon_adler··on Terrible real estate agent photographs
The estate agent percentage in the U.K. is typically around 2% of property value in total, paid by the seller, with virtually nobody using a buyers agent. I have never understood why fees are so crazy in the USA.
jon_adler··on Reddit is removing moderators that protest by taking their communities private
Why did reddit choose to charge app developers (causing financial uncertainty) for API requests instead of charging the end-users?

By purchasing my own usage and loading an API key into Apollo, I could continue to pay Apollo for the app alone like today, and pay Reddit separately for the API access. At least this way, I could decide if I’m happy with the price for API access.

I can only assume Reddit deliberately wanted to ruin the business model for third party apps.

jon_adler··on Is AM radio dead?
My uncle, a dedicated ham, worked his entire career in radio. Now he makes some nice pocket money in retirement keeping some old rural AM stations running because no one else really understands how they work.
