jokull··on Why Google's bookmark manager and Docs have purposefully bad UI
No. Google is just shit at design.
jokull··on Common data model mistakes made by startups
The way to do it is to have foreign keys, but instead of hard delete you scrub data in the columns.
jokull··on The Decline of Heroku
Love Render!
jokull··on Migrating to SQLAlchemy 2.0
The flipside of this is that SQLAlchemy teaches people about pooling, threading, processes etc. .... but yes, by painful trial in some cases.
jokull··on A Beginner’s Guide to Getting Started with Bitcoin
They are claims on taxes.
jokull··on A Beginner’s Guide to Getting Started with Bitcoin
Don’t! Ethically questionable. One of the least productive bubbles in human history. No crypto solutions have taken off despite massive VC investment. Time to call it what it is, a bubble that will burst. If not by itself then by greening of politics.
jokull··on Svelte come on top for satisfaction and interest:3
Picked this up for a Shopify JAMstack/headless project. I do like React Hooks, but this is an improvement. Sapper is what sold it to me, and SvelteKit (its successor coming later this year) will be even better as it’s powered by Snowpack. Highly recommend checking this out.
jokull··on I Bought Apple Silicon
Yeah wipe it. Mine is blazing fast and I started fresh.
jokull··on I Bought Apple Silicon
Replaced mbp 13" 2016 16gb with mba 8gb m1 and the difference is huge. Made me move to VS Code remote because homebrew is broken. Really digging it as a setup. Drives my LG 5k smoothly.
jokull··on Preact: Fast 3kb React Alternative with the Same API, Components and Virtual DOM
I found frontend tranquility in Snowpack and snowpack-rollup for production builds.
jokull··on Congress should invest in open-source software
Big movement in Iceland on this. Ministry of Finance has multiple teams working in a shared codebase that is open on github, that is supposed to be a shared repository to aggregate the whole gov user experience in one place (island.is). Another example; I’m using an NLP library (Greynir) that was recently MIT licensed because of Icelandic government grants (was previously on a less liberal, but still open license).

See https://github.com/island-is/island.is

jokull··on Why some people suffer from a stutter
Good question. For me it's just a mixed bundle and self fulfilling. I can map out the stuttering words and sounds and I jam up when I realize I can't replace the word elegantly. My stutters are now so far between that people are thrown back when it appears suddenly.
jokull··on Why some people suffer from a stutter
Wow, you are describing by exact experience. Except I did get over social anxiety eventually, mostly.
jokull··on Governments should adopt and invest in FOSS
Iceland is doing this (in a big way). TypeScript stack, 18 teams from different companies working together in the same open source code base and design system. HMU if you want to know more. Was an advisor on it.
jokull··on Ex-Google boss Eric Schmidt: US 'dropped the ball' on innovation
The book Doing Capitalism (2nd edition) does a good job of explaining the innovation process at this national interest level, and how it proceeds down to the private sector where it adapts to business models. Highly recommended.
jokull··on Ask HN: How many of you are employed, self-taught SWEs?
Told an ad agency I could code, using PHP and MySQL. Graduated from internship, then moved on to Django and Python. Web dev. Then backend work for a well funded startup, then my own startup. Was making static websites for restaurants in 2000 for restaurants at 13 years old (lol). All self taught and loving my pay, freedom, work and colleagues.
jokull··on Ask HN: Has anyone built a SaaS for local municipalities?
rfp threshold is closer to 4000usd in Iceland. An annual contract could be rolled year-by-year under that, and there are 72 municipalities to sell to.
jokull··on Mac keyboard shortcuts
Spectacle is nice and simple (3rd party)
jokull··on Ask HN: Has anybody shipped a web app at scale with 1 DB per account?
At QuizUp, a mobile gaming startup, we did not have 1 per user but 1024 databases to be able to shard and scale. We needed pgbouncer to decrease connection counts and overhead. There was some extra pain, but managable. Postgres allows you to have this logical seperation on one database instance.
jokull··on Ask HN: What's your quarantine side project?

    1. Aggregate all ebikes for sale in Iceland on orflaedi.is
    2. Started Awesome Reykjavík, a community project to make moving
from abroad to the capital region smoother
    3. Quit consulting and started something new: planitor.io
jokull··on Keycloak: Open-source identity and access management
Since you looked at Okta, Auth0 and Cognita ... which one did you pick?
jokull··on Keycloak: Open-source identity and access management
Thanks for pointing out Ory. Looks promising.
jokull··on Ask HN: How to properly manage a product roadmap?
Your job is to bridge business and engineering. If both of these sides trust your judgement your job is easy. You will win arguments when you can translate between these sides. Turn business concerns into engineering projects and express engineering projects in terms of business outcomes.
jokull··on Ask HN: How to prosper under negative interest rates?
A negative interest rate is a penalty for not putting liquid capital to productive investment, regardless of wether such opportunities are at hand. To some extent, so is inflation.

Negative rates don’t mean alternatives become better investment strategies. It just moves goal posts to encourage more risk taking in the economy.

Housing looks like the best alternative investment strategy. There are funds that focus on solid rental markets, owning their housing complexes for example.

jokull··on Ask HN: Book recommendations for understanding financial systems?
1. People’s QE (modern monetary policy, some great explain-to-me-like-I’m 5 sections) 2. Doing Capitalism by Bill Janeway (innovation economy) 3. Crashed by Adam Tooze (some financial history)
jokull··on Front (YC S14) raises $59M round led by other tech CEOs
They charge per seat so it gets expensive if you have lots of people that need access but are not full time support. That being said we never switched and are still paying! Good product. Surprised there isn’t more competition. Lots of SMB’s need this.
jokull··on RQ – Simple Job Queues for Python
Could you run this as an instance with a HTTP API to perform actions? Then I could use this with Python.
jokull··on Instagram influencers: Have we stopped believing?
Founder of the biggest UK platform here (also active in Germany and US). Influencers have been talked down for the whole four years we’ve been active.

Don’t forget what we’re comparing this to. Banner ads! Instagram influencers who are thoughtful and authentic are great. If you don’t like it you can unfollow the influencer. Same cannot be said of banner ads where the end user has little control and you get chased between platforms with units that often have little relavance to your interests.

jokull··on Substack
It’s an integrated solution. Patreon does bring a blog but this one is much better IMHO. It’s very well done.
jokull··on The Problem with “Modern Monetary Theory” Is That It's True
No, banks are not stuffed with reserves because they learned a lesson from 2008 and are being cautions like "before 1970". It’s because the Fed has been furiously swapping assets with the banks, buying their MBS’s for example. This is a balance sheet exercise which the Fed hopes prevents recession. It hasn't worked very well and that's why the MMT’s feel vindicated now that everyone's talking about how ineffective central banks have been since the recession.
