jojohohanon··on Steel Bank Common Lisp version 2.6.7
In my first job, grumpy Martin had as one of his many indispensable tasks, to build cmucl. (Itasoftware, one of the main lisp shops of the age)
jojohohanon··on US citizen charged after GrapheneOS phone wipes during airport search
It seems to me that this should have been a case of steganography?

Instead of wiping it clean, wipe to innocuous mode. Then the burden on their part is not only to show that I gave a bad pun, but that the innocuous mode is materially different than the previous state.

Pilot lights are often designed so that the heat from the flame holds a bimetallic switch in the open position. Should the light go out, the bimetallic switch will shut as it cools.
jojohohanon··on Jules, remote coding agent from Google Labs, announces API
Exposing my ignorance, how is this very different from copilot or other online coding agents?
jojohohanon··on How to draw construction equipment for kids
20 trucks lined up in our street (not the real name because it is much too far away to check) remains forever in our bookcase.

Much like Mamoko

jojohohanon··on Page Object (2013)
I’m confused and think I don’t get it.

If a webpage is an iceberg, the buttons and menus and dropdowns are the visible part. If I understand this page object, that’s what he proposes testing.

But the bit I care about is the bit underneath that will compose REST calls from those UI elements and sometimes make subsequent REST calls from the result of the previous ones.

That is the tricky bit to test, and the bit where we *still* fall back to manual testing and recorded demos for qa.

I was hoping this was a suggestion for a better selenium.

jojohohanon··on Tinyio: A tiny (~200 line) event loop for Python
Twisted, revisited?
jojohohanon··on TrackWeight: Turn your MacBook's trackpad into a digital weighing scale
I was a bit frustrated that the expected precision wasn’t on the main summary screen.

Does anyone know?

jojohohanon··on Locally hosting an internet-connected server
I feel like I missed a preread that teaches me about these strangle super-numeric ip addresses. Eg 400.564.987.500

Am I just seeing ipv6 in an unusually familiar format? Or is it an intentionally malformed format used by wireguard for internal routing?

jojohohanon··on Show HN: I made a 3D printed VTOL drone
Same way you get it in a quadcopter. You increase rpm in the (say) clockwise rotating props and decrease it in the counter clockwise rotors.

Net effect is yaw counter clockwise, but zero net change in lift.

jojohohanon··on Show HN: I made a 3D printed VTOL drone
I’m curious about the control surfaces. Since you have the four quadcopter motors, you could potentially just induce all three of yaw pitch and roll by powering those up.

I wonder if the reduction in weight from the now unneeded servos would pay for the extra battery drain.

jojohohanon··on The NSA Selector
Those who recall cars with fm radios and gsm phones will have heard something similar if their car had a random compartment right below the stereo.

When a call came in, before the phone would ring, the radio would emit this very clear tri di di dit dah dah. But only when the phone was very near the radio.

jojohohanon··on DDoSecrets publishes 410 GB of heap dumps, hacked from TeleMessage
There’s room for both sides of the razor. The heapdumpz could be there maliciously, but incompetently made globally accessible.
jojohohanon··on Zed: High-performance AI Code Editor
Does your monitor have a nonstandard rgb pattern? If zed is trying to do its own subpixel rendering then getting the pattern wrong is going to mess up your results.

(Or are you using it in vertical orientation?)

jojohohanon··on On Not Carrying a Camera – Cultivating memories instead of snapshots
… this is incredibly wrong headed. People forget. Even when we promise we will remember, we forget. And what we remember is often false and distorted; more so with every revisit.

Take snapshots and souvenirs to aid and anchor your memory. Take careful photographs to adorn your walls and communicate to others.

But don’t film concerts. There is no upside

jojohohanon··on Compiling Java into native binaries with Graal and Mill
So springboot and injection does a lot of this; searching the list of known classes for a suitable candidate for injection.

But it’s dynamic by implementation only; to alleviate what came before which was a tedious manual enumeration in xml of those same discoveries.

Presumably we could ask springboot’s discovery to output exactly those finding and the remove the introspection.

jojohohanon··on Diagnosing an Unusual WiFi Issue (2020)
I think they should (permission allowing) be able to ask for location, as often as they like.

I pin the system disruption from this query squarely on the OS. It should make such determinations in the background and return whatever value it has, without starting up a new scan just for this query.

Idk what my point is really. That high and low art share the same source, possibly, but I 100% retconned.

jojohohanon··on Air traffic failure caused by two locations 3600nm apart sharing 3-letter code
Is it just me or was it basically impossible to decipher what those three letter codes were?
jojohohanon··on Apple Seemingly Discontinuing Lightning to Headphone Jack Adapter
Someone (ASR) claimed years ago, but I noticed only recently that the adapter is actually a fairly high quality DAC.

jojohohanon··on A new JSON data type for ClickHouse
It’s fair tho. This conversation is “if you use clickhouse, then this is how you would solve x”

And a completely fair question is “why would I want to spin up a completely new stack when I have psql already installed?”

In my (very limited ) experience you almost never do want to, but when you do, you wish you had started 6 months ago.

jojohohanon··on A new JSON data type for ClickHouse
I’m a few years removed, but isn’t this how google capacitor stores protobufs (which are ~ equivalent to json in what they can express)?
jojohohanon··on 'Islands' of regularity discovered in the famously chaotic three-body problem
Pchst.

If a bunch of puppets can fly stars around the galaxy in a Klemperer rosette, How Hard Can It Be?!

jojohohanon··on Lem: Emacs-like editor written in Common Lisp
Huh?

I (used to) use it almost exclusively with eglot lsp to python language server (Jedi I think). I run emacsfoacosx 29.2 and now .3. And I’ve used it since 1996 on emacs 18 on a b/w sun workstation.

But most recently on the last 2020 intel MacBook Pro.

The cursor moving speed through a source file is atrocious. Maybe 3 - 4 lines per second vertical and similarly horizontal.

The shell just freezes on long lines and forget about font lock for multi MB json.

All of these tasks would be hard a decade ago but now aren’t even table stakes.

It just /feels/ sluggish.

I reluctantly just gave up. It was fast way back then but I think workloads have changed. I tried zed for a bit but have now reluctantly gone to pycharm CE. If you accept the different windowing metaphor and add bindings for C-a and C-e and friends (some are standard) it’s not bad. And never sluggish (same hardware).

I love emacs but for my outlandish workload of python programming and wrangling multi MB text output it just doesn’t perform.

I speculate it isn’t straight line speed but threading that is hurting perceived latency.

jojohohanon··on DuckDuckGo for Mac is now open source
I am confused.

Ddg is a web search engine. So <search engine> for Mac seems like a type error.

The linked page tells you that they are hiring, and how to install the project, but /not what it is/.
