jojobas··on What happened to the Snowden archive
Two dead and few dozen ill doesn't quite sound like the worst thing. Random street cops do that to more people for no good reason in any given year.
jojobas··on Landing the Space Shuttle – A Flying Machine and the Thrill of a Lifetime
At triple the speed and double the approach angle, for ~6 times the sink rate. Hardly an approximation.
jojobas··on Landing the Space Shuttle – A Flying Machine and the Thrill of a Lifetime
The final approach was at about 12 degrees glide. This is about double of no-power Cessna, but still kinda shallow.
jojobas··on Australia says it could follow Canada in forging deeper ties with EU
While some are indeed highly skilled and earn well, many are skilled only on paper and end up driving Ubers. Also in the recent past many of the skilled migrants were for low-paid occupations like chefs.
jojobas··on AWS says it can't restore some data from mideast facilities struck by Iran
Yeah, Iran blowing up half the Middle East? Totally Bezos' fault.
jojobas··on Australia says it could follow Canada in forging deeper ties with EU
Per capita GDP is falling with every new migrant. I don't think it's the kind of GDP growth anyone wants to have.
jojobas··on Australia says it could follow Canada in forging deeper ties with EU
Nobody in Australia should like it.

Like ordering the submarines from France... again?
jojobas··on Most people prefer traditional architecture
There's plenty of traditional architecture that's not baroque, and is therefore not very rich in ornamentation. An austere brick home with a tiled roof still wins over a modernist cube house in both form and function, if not cost.
jojobas··on Apple Reference Image: A New Approach for Verified Photography
Paint the stopper vantablack then.
jojobas··on Amazon vs. Perplexity – U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit
"Leg to stand on"
jojobas··on Pion, an agent designed to run any company autonomously
... to run any company into the ground autonomously
jojobas··on 'Fingerprints' inside the Sun could reveal if it once swallowed a planet
The life-bearing debris would have to arrive quite some time after formation of Earth, as it was molten. Surviving atmospheric entry is hard, surviving after landing in lava is impossible.
jojobas··on Growing proof that autonomous cars save lives
You might know them as street racers and/or "these assholes with loud pipes at 3AM".
jojobas··on Rivian's gambit for full autonomy
Teslas also require a couple of OoMs more interventions driving the same distance than Waymos.
jojobas··on Growing proof that autonomous cars save lives
This is not supported by crash data. In Australia alcohol is involved in some 30% of fatal crashes. A lot of crashes are caused by a very small number of hoon drivers, distracted drivers etc.

Autonomous cars beating the average that includes the above are still worse than a diligent driver, which anyone can resolve to be.

jojobas··on AirPods 5
The question is why post ads to Hacker News.
jojobas··on 216M Spy TVs – The LG Smart TV Problem [video]
Wrong number, I have no idea.
jojobas··on 216M Spy TVs – The LG Smart TV Problem [video]
GBM/DRM Kodi supports HDR video on the Orange Pi 5 family. You can grab whatever audio from HDMI or plug whatever in the usb port, the only advantage of this Vero is the optical out.
jojobas··on 216M Spy TVs – The LG Smart TV Problem [video]
Any SBC like Radxa Rock (cheap) to Orange Pi (powerful). 4k output, a linux you control, play retro games or stream torrent movies.
jojobas··on I refused to train the AI that could replace me
The argument against "they can do something else with their lives" is not a strawman though.

In a hypothetical end state where the people who own fully-automated production of everything, and need maybe few millions employed to support and guard that production, the "freed" people are not going to do something better with their lives.

jojobas··on Every novel is boring until it isn't
As a kid I'd often start reading books from about the middle, if I liked it, I'd restart from the beginning before I finished, if I didn't, I got another book.
jojobas··on Four Weeks of a Vegan Diet Alter Signs of Inflammation and Aging
Stay mad.
jojobas··on Four Weeks of a Vegan Diet Alter Signs of Inflammation and Aging
None needed.
jojobas··on The asteroid currently hitting front end web development
I don't know. The website does what it needs to and doesn't do anything to annoy me.
jojobas··on The asteroid currently hitting front end web development
Creativity and originality? Like when you try to scroll a page and it rotates an image gallery instead?
jojobas··on Google avoids a breakup of its ad tech business
IBM is more than 100 years old, has defined a huge part of how we think about computers, made plenty of its employees and workers of the wider field rich, has sold many businesses it considered distracting, and is still worth $200B+. Anyone saying "IBM" in the sense of "stagnant failure" is delusional.
jojobas··on Uber shuts operations in Nigeria and Uganda with immediate effect
At least Victoria and NSW treat ubers exactly like private cars in terms of child restraints.

"Cannot carry safely" is valid defence for whatever discrimination suit I believe.

Then again, plenty of Uber drivers carry a booster seat, I wonder why Uber doesn't just have a checkbox for that.

jojobas··on Uber shuts operations in Nigeria and Uganda with immediate effect
Nope, see above - 144 vs 80-90 right this moment, taxi is way more expensive.
jojobas··on Uber shuts operations in Nigeria and Uganda with immediate effect
13cabs, a licensed cab operator, just gave me an estimate of AUD144, UberX 79, Uber Comfort 90.
