johnsmith21006··on Google Wifi and OnHub Devices Experiencing Issues
Not technically bricked bit needed hard reset. It is pretty interesting that what seems like a false positive integrity signal on your Google account appears related.

I am sure some will hate this but the elephant in the room is embedded devices including network device are incredibly insecure and do not get updates.

Google appears to be taking security and home networking to a new level. But most "techies" know far easier to do insecure then secure. Nobody complains when internet works even if insecure. Seems like a bump in the road for Google in pressing forward with this.

Some will think crazy for a Corp to be basically running my home network but for me I have better things to play with so go at it. But last night glitch needs to be a one time thing.

johnsmith21006··on Announcing the first SHA-1 collision
Why chance with Firefox? Google has Chrome already safe and clearly on top of things. This is not a static thing as in there will be others with parts of the crypto tool chain or maybe stack?
johnsmith21006··on The Year of Linux on Everything but the Desktop
Excellent article. Last year both Mac sales and Windows sales declined YoY. Only one "desktop" grew. ChromeOS is Linux base and grew over 35% YoY. Still small numbers but is now #2 in the US and growing quickly.

johnsmith21006··on Show HN: AVR-VM – VM with JIT-compiler for ATMega32 written in Rust
Well this is really impressive. Now maybe not as much as Borland full turbo Pascal environment in 32k in the old days but anyone worked on one of these chips you have crazy little resources to work with.
johnsmith21006··on Why I Don’t Talk to Google Recruiters
Anyone find it interesting the author had a bad experience with Amazon but titles the article with Google and he has a problem with company integrity?
johnsmith21006··on Why Do Americans Refrigerate Their Eggs?
Same reason as the peanut butter jar because far easier to find. But did have to explain to wife when we married.
johnsmith21006··on BSD socket API revamp
A very long time ago and coming from VMS a big reason preferred BSD over Sys V was non blocking sockets. Now that was over 20 years ago but now going away?
johnsmith21006··on Firefox 57 as the first release where only WebExtensions will be supported
Plus Google has much broader view and data to secure Chrome well beyond FF is going to be able to accomplish. Plus Google has far more to loose.
johnsmith21006··on Google Spreadsheets and Python
Our school district has moved to Google sheets for kids grades and I am blown away how well it fits with this use case.
johnsmith21006··on Google Spreadsheets and Python
Totally agree on Google Sheets. I love the connectivity of sheets and the best application I have seen is grades at the school district when you have a lot of kids. It is so easy for me and my wife

I would think ultimately it was Android that was the nail.
johnsmith21006··on Introducing Cloud Spanner, a Global Database Service
It is not close to equivalent. But I do want to get a better feel for if Google really has figured how to do basically the impossible. I want to see if this truly scales horizontally but of it does then competitors better hope for a much more detailed paper :)
johnsmith21006··on BSDploy – FreeBSD jail provisioning
Containers use the Linux kernel. How does a Linux container run native on Windows? Are the entry points mapped? How does Windows enable shared read between containers? With Linux it is the dir path and then inodes. How does Windows pull this off? How does SElinux work?

What is exposed inside Windows?

johnsmith21006··on BSDploy – FreeBSD jail provisioning
> That's an interesting way of looking at it. Docker also came with a way to do things. Jails you were still responsible for having it set up correctly (though you could tar them which was nice).

Separate kernel and OS is ideal for containers, IMO. What was thought to be a plus with BSD I believe turned out to be a weakness.

johnsmith21006··on BSDploy – FreeBSD jail provisioning
Linux runs all of Android which is the most common OS today. But it also runs the biggest clouds in terms of infrastructure. Google and Amazon are completely built on Linux. Linux also runs 95% of the super computers in the world.

As containers eat the world you will see more and more Linux, IMO.

Used both since .96 Linux and for network BSD was far superior but you could feel which was going to win very early so switched once Linux was usable.

johnsmith21006··on BSDploy – FreeBSD jail provisioning
To me the separation of kernel and OS with Linux versus all together with BSD makes the container solution cleaner.

Take Google that is rumored to be using the same kernel in their cloud, ChromeOS and Android.

They concievably could have the same kernel from iOT, wearables, phone, tablet, 2 in 1, laptops, TV and cloud.

Google now is using the container functionality in ChromeOS to enable Android. Now if they give access I can run my cloud service on a laptop or a tablet. Instead of spending a fortune for a Swift version and a copy in Java.

But I also could develop once and deploy. Google has the containers like!E this on ARM and X86 and in their cloud on Power.

Now the containers are arch specific but not far from fixing that.

Google needs to allow a second SSD that is walled from the system SSD and give us access to launching containers. We get such storage in something like the M3 with rumored 16gb Samsung Pros but it is flash.

It is just not possible to do the same in BSD based on my very old experience. Has it changed?

johnsmith21006··on Apple proposes new web 3D graphics API
It has the Linux kernel you just bring the GNU or whatever you need. But Google now supports containers on ChromeOS so if access you can just run in a container and the use Android X Windows server on same box.

If Google would gives this away have my perfect development solution. I can play my Android games on my 2 in 1 and then use full Linux when in laptop mode. But I can also debug my containers on my laptop as native.

But when needed I have sold browser and other core things can never be touched. Basically give me a iPad and a Chromebook and a full Linux development machine. Well no kernel dev on Linux but most things, native, shared read, etc.

But I want an extra SSD that is separate from the kernel SSD. I think this can be done and even keep read share from boot dev and something running as a container.

Here is the Apple data and you can see for 2016 Mac sales declined 14%.

johnsmith21006··on Apple proposes new web 3D graphics API
Not true on Apple selling a record amount of Macs. Apparently they added 7 days to the quarter versus a year before and therefore Mac sales declined again. For 2016 Mac sales also declined compared to 2015. Apple Mac sales declining is tied to the lack of new OS X software, IMO. Otherwise why decline?
johnsmith21006··on Snap commits $2B over 5 years for Google Cloud infrastructure
Google also owns a piece of Snap through their venture arm. Plus I would think Snap will want to stay close to Google for access to their advertising exchange. We are quickly getting down to just two advertising exchanges Google and Facebook.
johnsmith21006··on Apple Reports Record First Quarter Results
Do realize Apple did add 7 days to the quarter this year compared to 2015. Apple started quarter on Sept 25 and ended on Dec 31 in 2016 or 97 days versus their 2015 only 90 days.

Apples to apples the Mac declined as did iPhones.

johnsmith21006··on Should gifted students go to a separate school?
In the US. Our school does one day a week for the gifted kids. I have volunteered at the school and love the program. Only issue is it fair to the other kids? You get in based an IQ test.
johnsmith21006··on Apple Inc: A Pre-Mortem
Apple was over $130 almost two years ago and is $120 today so the idea that Apple is doing from an investor standpoint is not true. Take Google today like many others the stock is the highest it has ever been.

Google voice is rumored to be getting a major refresh. Will we get the new translate capabilities built-in to Google Voice in real time. Basically it would be the universal communicator.

I do not need the functionality personally but I want to see it in my lifetime.

johnsmith21006··on Cartography Comparison: Google Maps and Apple Maps
2016 Nielsen for popular apps had Google Maps #4 for all apps. There were no other mapping apps on the list this year. Not even Apple maps so talking about Google maps as the universal solution makes sense, IMO.

This article refers to 2015 Nielsen when Apple maps did make the list. Not sure why it fell of the list.

johnsmith21006··on Cartography Comparison: Google Maps and Apple Maps
Since Windows phone has such a low % of users and then expense in supporting some thing as complicated as Google maps it would make sense to focus on the two. With Android and iOS they can hit 90%+ of users.

johnsmith21006··on Is it time to swap your Mac for a Windows laptop?
Depending on your use case would also consider a Chromebook. Purchased son an Acer 14 and love this laptop and want one for myself.
