johnnypangs··on Git-absorb: Git commit –fixup, but automatic
I’ve been using this:

alias gfixup="git commit -v --fixup HEAD && GIT_SEQUENCE_EDITOR=touch git rebase -i --stat --autosquash --autostash HEAD~2"

From what I understand it does the same thing as this crate for the most part. All I do after is:

git push —force-with-lease

Not sure what you get from the crate otherwise

johnnypangs··on Epic Games Store and Fortnite Arrive on EU iPhones
You can install ublock origin but it doesn’t actually do anything on Orion on iOS. I tested it not too long ago, maybe things have changed but Orion still uses WebKit and iOSes APIs. I have heard Orion’s default ad blocker isn’t bad though.
johnnypangs··on GitHub was down
Seems like it was a config change that cause it. They reverted it reality quickly.

johnnypangs··on I Quit Spotify
I think for me listening to a whole album comes from the fact that I’m a “legacy” music user. I used to listen to CDs and cassette tapes. So listening to five different artists meant either making a mix tape or changing CDs five times. So now I’m just used to listening to a whole album because sometimes that was all I had.
johnnypangs··on Progressive Web Apps (PWAs) Phishing
I think that it’s pretty hard to stop with the current state of PWA installation.

You could try the manifest data, (the data for the PWA app) tied more to the html and dns. Making it harder to impersonate other sites.

You could also go a more extreme route and have something like PWA app signing like other kinds of apps.

johnnypangs··on Next.js 14
Fun fact: Vercel “owns” Svelte too.

johnnypangs··on Next.js 14
Their enterprise version is super expensive, their integration with Amazon can give you an idea of their enterprise pricing https://aws.amazon.com/marketplace/pp/prodview-lwqascgzju3bo
johnnypangs··on Classic rock, Mario Kart, and why we can’t agree on Tailwind
I found a bunch of them, here’s one: https://github.com/Devzstudio/tailwind_to_css
johnnypangs··on Zig 0.11
Bun, a JavaScript runtime (uses WebKit as an engine I believe) is written in Zig. They seem to be doing alright:

johnnypangs··on Ask HN: Could you share your personal blog here?
Like a lot of other people, I have a blog that I seldom post things on. Mostly on the topic of creating the blog itself. I try to be humorous and informative but who knows how much of either I actually am haha :)

johnnypangs··on Show HN: 77 Year old launches SaaS platform today. Seeks feedback
Yeah, it’s seems weird to have a not real listing there. Maybe to start with you could partner real estate companies and have both house that are direct sells and ones that redirect you to a realtor. At least they would be real houses, and then people decide to buy a house you could message them asking them if they’d like to sell on the platform instead.
johnnypangs··on Rome v12.1: a linter formatter for TypeScript, JSX and JSON
Coming from using yarn, it is way easier to move to pnpm than to yarn 2+. It’s now my go to. The only issues I find is that you’ll still not find good community support for it. Things like Dependabot and some edge hosting platform build agents.
johnnypangs··on NPM Provenance Public Beta
If you look at the GitHub announcement in the looking ahead section it says this:

> Working with other cloud CI/CD providers to add support for provenance signing

So hopefully they make good on that point.

johnnypangs··on Powering a Serverless Web: Vercel Joins AWS Marketplace
This is similar to Vercel’s enterprise offerings. We wanted to use Vercel with more than 10 people at a previous employer and opted not to due the price.

johnnypangs··on A suspiciously criminal portfolio website
It seems like it just scrolls through the page on a loop.
johnnypangs··on Rust Is the Future of JavaScript Infrastructure (2021)
I would argue that SWC is more mature than esbuild as SWC is on a version 1+ release (the author on their site says that is “late stage beta” and vite still doesn’t use it for production builds), has been around for 2 years longer than esbuild (going by github histories) and is being made by more than one (very capable) person.
johnnypangs··on Show HN: Readwise Reader, an all-in-one reading app
It’s Mozilla right? I’m not sure how much money they make off pocket but I imagine that it’s no where near as much as keeping that google money flowing.

That being said, I imagine every bit counts for Mozilla. Anybody have any idea how big their user base is?

johnnypangs··on Bun 0.3
Bun seems really cool! I had a question about this part:

> Bun now works in more Linux environments, including Amazon Linux 2 and builds for Vercel and Cloudflare Pages. (Previously, you might have seen errors like: "version 'GLIBC_2.29' not found")

How would building for Vercel and CF pages work? Like normal but installing the relevant build tools using bun?

johnnypangs··on Google to lay off 10k “poor performers”
Is the current macroeconomics really a good reason to lay people off? It feels to me almost like double speak for a company that just made less money than they expected and blaming it on the economy rather than taking any responsibility.
johnnypangs··on Why does zsh start so slowly?
I really enjoy zr(at). I don’t think it will help with specific completions that are slow to load though, but it’s simple, easy to use and can be pretty bare bones.

johnnypangs··on Helix: Post-Modern Text Editor
Waiting on this PR to get through:

https://github.com/helix-editor/helix/pull/2507

I write mostly in typescript, and being able to run eslint and tsserver is pretty important for my workflow. (I could just use this branch and build it from source though…)

johnnypangs··on Turbopack, the successor to Webpack
Cool, thanks for saying!
johnnypangs··on Turbopack, the successor to Webpack
This is using swc under the hood which as a transpiler is usually slower than esbuild. What makes Turbopack faster is caching not the transpiler. Rails (or vite or whoever) can implement similar caching speeding things up as well.

Why I wouldn’t choose, esbuild is because they don’t support the automatic React runtime and don’t seem to have plans to (or at least last time I checked.) Swc does… So as long as you’re okay with that limitation I imagine you’re probably fine.

You could also potentially use Bazel for remote caching in your rails app, though I haven’t used it myself so I don’t know how well it would work.

johnnypangs··on Space-based solar power is getting serious
This is what I think could be happening from the link:

> That is not the case with the telecom tower, or a flashlight, or a laser. In those cases, radiation is directed, not equal in every direction. The inverse square law still applies, but distance is calculated from an apparent source well behind the actual energy source.

johnnypangs··on Space-based solar power is getting serious
I found this, seems like it might be similar not sure though:

johnnypangs··on Go: Redefining For Loop Variable Semantics
I think they misinterpreted the word “existed” in this case. They took it as go mod would have never been made instead of go mod didn’t exist at that time.
johnnypangs··on Tremor – React library to build dashboards fast
It seems like you have to install tailwind so you should be able to customize it with your own config. (Haven’t tried it though)

What I’m confused about is the change of the api from tailwind, the whole `maxWidth=“max-w-sm”` seems repetitive and a worse abstraction.

johnnypangs··on Day.js – Fast 2kB alternative to Moment.js with the same modern API
Yeah, but that’s been just a proposal for a long time. Getting new features in JS takes forever.
