johnnydoebk··on Ask HN: Is my project at a disadvantage for being hosted on a GitHub competitor?
I don't think it has something to do with the community. But rather that GL and BB are losing to GH in terms of UI / UX. Well, at least I wanted to switch to GL long ago, but couldn't due to unsatisfaction by their user interface.
johnnydoebk··on Ask HN: Is my project at a disadvantage for being hosted on a GitHub competitor?
Please do something with the fixed header on [1], it wastes 15-20% of screen space on every device that doesn't have at least 1920x1168 resolution. That's not cool.

And it would be great to decrease the content block's width to something like 75-80%. Just like GH, HN, millions of other websites, and even BB.

johnnydoebk··on I don’t belong in tech
And if I were to make a decision based on HN comments, I'd hire @thro32, no joke. I've read all the comments and their author makes an impression of an interesting person with a broad outlook.
johnnydoebk··on Deleting the golang subreddit
I'd make the subreddit unofficial, too but for other reasons. It is a very unwelcoming place. I'm not the first one who's saying this, but it's really a shame how toxic the /r/golang is.
johnnydoebk··on Deleting the golang subreddit
I never liked the /r/golang subreddit and its atmosphere. But at the moment it's the most active golang community that I'm aware of.
johnnydoebk··on CockroachDB Stability Post-Mortem: From 1 Node to 100 Nodes
Thanks, now I see those are tabs. I didn't know Github indentation style is customizable. Interesting.
johnnydoebk··on 8M GitHub profiles were leaked from GeekedIn's MongoDB
>> How frequently do you get these kinds of recruitment emails?

I'm actively contributing to popular projects, have more than a dozen of followers, and my email is public but I have never received any recruitment emails. It's a pity.

johnnydoebk··on CockroachDB Stability Post-Mortem: From 1 Node to 100 Nodes
Sorry for a question that is not directly related to the blog post, but anyway. CockroachDB is the only Go project I'm aware of that uses `2 spaces` indentation instead of `tab`s. I'm curious, is there any reason for that?
johnnydoebk··on Ask HN: An idea that you could not implement?
Was it assembly.com [1]?

[1]: https://www.crunchbase.com/organization/assembly

johnnydoebk··on Ask HN: An idea that you could not implement?
A platform where random people are collaborating with each other to bootstrap startups. Not difficult from a technical point of view. But it's not clear whether anybody needs it.
johnnydoebk··on Dear Google, Apple, Mozilla, and MS: Please End Auto-Playing Media in Browsers
That's not true for all browsers.

As @ben_bai pointed out above it works that way on Chromium.

johnnydoebk··on Investigation Reveals Silicon Valley’s Abuse of Immigrant Tech Workers
I think @jondubois's comment was about the 1st part of @CoolGuySteve's comment regarding the "deceiving employer":

>> you have to deceive your employer until the transfer goes through

It sounded like it is morally bad to do so. @jondubois says that there is nothing wrong in it as you do not belong to your employer.

johnnydoebk··on Dear Google, Apple, Mozilla, and MS: Please End Auto-Playing Media in Browsers
>> youtube is one of the few sites where people actually want autoplay

Not me. I usually open a few tabs at the same time and have to stop every video manually. That's pretty annoying. I wish it didn't have autoplay.

johnnydoebk··on Seven years of Go
If `c` is not some complex expression, I would write that as:

    a := c
    if flag {
    	a = b
    }
johnnydoebk··on Canada's immigration website crashes on election night
Guys, take me to the first world. I want to suffer, too.
johnnydoebk··on Ask HN: How do you keep motivated if nobody supports you?
Wow, this is my story. Every line, except I'm a few years younger, I haven't heard about Holagus as I'm not from Mexico, I'm into other fields not IoT, and my dad doesn't have a business.
johnnydoebk··on Show HN: 1000 ideas
>> I would like to give individual feedback on some ideas, but there is not an easy way to do it.

How about openning an issue (one per idea)? I'd be glad to read comments and probably take part in discussions, too.

johnnydoebk··on Secure Account Recovery Made Simple
>> Just store the hash of the token (ideally stretched like any password) in the database and mail the original token out

If I understand it correctly, that's exactly what they propose. You mail the original token out, store its hash. The second string is used as an ID (there should be a secondary index on it).

johnnydoebk··on Gallium – Build Desktop Applications in Go and HTML
I wonder how good a desktop app will work if we drop the JS part altogether and use HTTP and regular client-server architecture (i.e. every click will have to rerender the template)? I guess something like Mozilla's servo can be used for that instead of a full featured Chromium to improve performance.
johnnydoebk··on Gallium – Build Desktop Applications in Go and HTML
>> Why would I want to use Go

Probably, you wouldn't. But it's not quite surprising if users of GopherJS and Go would prefer Go over JS, is it?

johnnydoebk··on Microservices
I'll go against the majority (or vocal minority?) and say: I like your title, it's good because it attracts attention (I wouldn't read the post if it were a "understand the implications of having a microservice architecture" or whatever others recommend).
johnnydoebk··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (September 2016)
Did you have a hackerrank test?
johnnydoebk··on YaCy: a free distributed search engine
It's not a search engine. But the search engines it is based on provide surprisingly good results. So, I would be careful with the statement that "other search engines are not even close to Google".

I think that's just a matter of habits. Initially, it feels a bit unusual and maybe even uncomfortable to use not the search engine you've got used to. But after some time you understand that now Google is the one that is uncomfortable for you.

johnnydoebk··on Moving Towards a More Secure Web
I think the problem with the Firefox's "red" "no lock" icon is than it is mostly gray. Many people do not even notice it. I think if it were actually red the effect would be much stronger.
johnnydoebk··on YaCy: a free distributed search engine
This is exactly my experience. As for the disadvantages of ddg, it's difficult to find some regional results from not-so-popular websites. This is not where ddg shines. Apart from that, I like ddg's results more than google's ones.
johnnydoebk··on GitLab 8.11 Released with Issue Boards and Merge Conflict Resolution
Is it a matter of taste or Github's UI indeed looks more professional than Gitlab's one? I've tried to switch from GH to GL hosted for my personal projects multiple times and no luck. I like the fact that Gitlab is open-source and it has a lot of features but I still don't feel comfortable using it. Any opinions and preferences on GH's UI vs. GL's UI?
johnnydoebk··on Anti-Google research group in Washington is funded by Oracle
>> Anti-Google research group in Washington is funded by Oracle

Does it matter? Research is either legit or BS. That's all that matters, doesn't it?

johnnydoebk··on This is party time; Internet Explorer 8, 9 and 10 die on Tuesday
> They can still install Firefox.

Latest versions of Firefox cannot be installed on XP. Though, Chrome still works.

johnnydoebk··on Show HN: Nodal. Next-Generation Node.js Server and Framework
> One language to rule them all. > JavaScript is becoming the web darling (or it already is?)

I wonder, will it be still as popular if WebAssembly let us use any programming language on the client? I mean post MVP WebAssembly with support of GC, DOM, and so forth.

johnnydoebk··on Ask HN: Is java technology not suited for web based applications?
Well, I'd understand your concerns if you asked about Haskell or Erlang for web-development. I suppose there are not so many companies who develop their web apps in those languages and it may be just not that easy to find an appropriate position. But Java? Open http://yclist.com/ (list of YC companies). There are enough of those who uses Java.
