johnnyb9··on I'm an Unemployed Waitress. Don't Dine Out at All
In NYC you can't even dine indoors. Is there really a big risk of eating maskless at a table, outdoors, separated by plexiglass (or 6 feet apart), in a city where the COVID infection rate is so low? Or serving those customers?
johnnyb9··on Citing revenue declines, Airbnb cuts 25% of workforce
How is this an even better deal? About the same amount of pay, half the healthcare paid (COBRA healthcare is same plan). As for recall rights and release from non-competes, these are slightly better than nothing I suppose.
johnnyb9··on ORMs Are Backwards
How do you avoid leaking business logic into database stored procedures? Sounds like you would now have two sources of truth, application logic, and database stored procedures.

Is a pay-as-you-go pension really a smart option if your #1 product/mandate (first class mail) is at total risk of becoming irrelevant in the near-term?
johnnyb9··on 2019 Pulitzer Prize Winners
If the report is so damning otherwise, why is Barr even releasing it?
johnnyb9··on High-tax states like California and New York make it hard for rich to leave
Meta point: does it seem like conservative posts on HN are constantly downvoted nowadays? Previously downvotes were saved for the topics that don’t contribute anything to the discussion.
johnnyb9··on AMA: Bill Gates
I agree they probably stop caring about their tax bill because they are billionaires. I find it disingenuous however to then look down the income ladder to people earning more than $1 million and including them in your “we don’t pay enough taxes” bucket.
johnnyb9··on Willy Wonka and the Medical Software Factory
The fact that it's a paid for trip is why it is worth mentioning, not necessarily the length. Five weeks of vacation, while not very common, is common enough that it's not really worth writing about otherwise. Edit: Agreed that 5 weeks of contiguous vacation is rare
johnnyb9··on Apple Admits to Hardware Quality Problems with iPhone X, MacBook Pro
Not the op, but in NYC walking in and out of the subways is annoying... takes the phone sometimes a minute to re-connect to the cell network. In prior phones w/Qualcomm modems the experience was much faster.

Is Amazon really this trigger happy?
johnnyb9··on 24 hours in a diner in New York
One time I had jet lag and went to the neighborhood diner (in NYC) a bit on the earlier side, like 5 AM or so. For a random Tuesday morning it was interesting to see all sorts of people walk in after a night out (on a Tuesday morning no less!). Reminded me of how crazy the city is.
johnnyb9··on Tempe Police Release Video of Uber Accident
Setting aside the fault of the vehicle in this case, why didn't she get out of the way? Would she not have seen the car coming at 38 MPH?
johnnyb9··on Can Washington Be Automated?
I think the idea is that you don’t want to be holding 100% US large cap equities when you’re in retirement.
johnnyb9··on XPS 13 developer edition 7th generation available
I bought a Dell XPS 9550 with terrible coil whine from the Microsoft Store about two years ago. Thinking I was just unlucky, I did an exchange (MS Store) to a different unit. This one had no coil whine, but would not wake up from sleep about half the time.

If you think Apple has fallen in terms of quality, you have no idea how low they would have to fall to match Dell's.

johnnyb9··on DHS weighs major change to H-1B foreign tech worker visa program
First, I don't really think there is a shortage of college degree-earning people in this country. Second, your plan is just a giveaway to colleges... they can charge whatever they want as gatekeepers to visas earned in the USA.
johnnyb9··on Your Mother’s Maiden Name Is Not a Secret
- We don't use 2FA authentication, I guess because there are more cost effective ways of verifying our identity (probably not going to last much longer with all the breaches)

- ACH in the USA is free and fast (one business day)... and that's the main way of receiving salary, paying bills, etc. Is Europe really any better in this regard?

- No one uses paper checks here either...

johnnyb9··on Living in a parking lot in Santa Barbara
You seem to have left out the fact that Americans make much more than their Canadian, Western European, or Australian counterparts?
johnnyb9··on SQL Operations Studio
With minimal effort this may prove better than SSMS.
johnnyb9··on Will.i.am's startup raises $117M, enters enterprise market

"Two investors in Juicero were surprised to learn the startup’s juice packs could be squeezed by hand without using its high-tech machine."

johnnyb9··on The Great College Loan Swindle
How is this the fault of banks? Isn't the federal government the largest underwriter of loans these days?
johnnyb9··on A Student Loan Nightmare: The Teacher in the Wrong Payment Plan
People in Europe end up paying for the education, you just don't see it on an itemized statement. What if you add up the 2-3% of your wages across your entire lifetime?

Another thing to point out is that many colleges offer grants, scholarships, and work study such that the sticker price often isn't what gets paid.

johnnyb9··on Early Facebook Employees Regret the Monster They Created
I don't think the Washington Post was posting 5 times a day about Obama birth certificates.
johnnyb9··on Ineffective coding habits many F# programmers don’t have
I wonder what version of C#? C# 7 and 6 are less verbose.
johnnyb9··on Buffett wins $1M decade-old bet that the S&P500 would outperform hedgefunds
What about the fact that certain strategies can only be invested in but for hedge funds?
johnnyb9··on No matter what, Equifax may tell you you’ve been impacted by the hack
Someone comments in TFA that Equifax likely gives random results to garbage inputs to deter criminals from using it as a way to validate data.

johnnyb9··on When all job differences are accounted for, the pay gap almost disappears
So they are valuable, so long as you don't value them with money.
johnnyb9··on Scientists Reverse Brain Damage in Drowned Toddler?
That's generally the case with US insurance companies as well, which leads me to believe this is more "experimental" and thus not a good example of the merits of a single payer system.
