johnmarcus··on “Just walk out” technology by Amazon
Yay! The big brother distopia I always wanted! Finally.
johnmarcus··on Show HN: Nonprofit Open-Source Food Delivery and Local Shopping Platform
Wow. This is an ambitious project and one of the first and only usefull implementation of decentralized tech I've seen. Kudos. A small and stupid nitpick, the example shows 3 items for $650usd, seems a tad expensive for groceries XD. This is far better than yet another useless decentralized messenger everyone wants to build. I hope it takes off. As a more seriouse suggestion, consider offering paid hosting as a service with a price structure around traffic as I can see a lot of small stores won't have the tech experience to launch this, as easy as you have made it. Plus, they probably need to focus on importing inventory, which is probably the hardest part to get started. I could see a 'getting started inventory pack' using industry bar codes as a useful add on where they just need to adjust the price.

Either way, cool product.

johnmarcus··on Xv6, a simple Unix-like teaching operating system
thank you, that's useful information of what this is.
johnmarcus··on Xv6, a simple Unix-like teaching operating system
like literally, i was asking for instructions. neither this post nor the github repo offered any instructions of what one is supposed to do with this, aka, how to build it, how to run it, or what to learn.
johnmarcus··on Xv6, a simple Unix-like teaching operating system
not sure what all the downvotes are for - it was a legitimate question. The instructions just say to clone the github repo. The github repo just says it's for learning - no instructions.

How is one to learn without instructions? Or it only to teach those whom already know the answers?

johnmarcus··on What Sets Us Apart: Filecoin’s Proof System
It was a month ago I checked it out and it just wasn't usable - i do not remember the details but even basic things did not work. I had a json dataset i just wanted in a local db, and that was proving challenging for simple operations is what I remember, didn't even get into the p2p side yet. If I remember correctly, it wasn't returning accurate results when queried.

try creating a youtube video of getting it to work from scratch, reading and writing data and i think you will see the problems. Or maybe ask a friend that is less familiar than yourself to try it, the problems seemed rather obvious as it just didn't work for a basic use case.

johnmarcus··on Xv6, a simple Unix-like teaching operating system
What am I supposed to do with it?
johnmarcus··on Launch HN: Trustle (YC W20) – On-demand child development experts for parents
$50/mo seems quite reasonable for the hours of reading it can save. I think this is a great idea.
johnmarcus··on What Sets Us Apart: Filecoin’s Proof System
Because Filecoin being a tradable asset as well as a utility confuses how it's valued. If it rises quickly, it's better to sell then spend. If it drops, it's bad for those running servers. Both ups and downs are being driven by forces which have nothing to do with cost of services, that's the problem. Unless they fix the price of Filecoin against the USD to make it a real utility, it's a get rich quick scheme.
johnmarcus··on What Sets Us Apart: Filecoin’s Proof System
They pay in Filecoin, which is a fluctuating asset based on financial market conditions which have nothing to do with actual cost of services. Do your research, else your just anther naive investor, or worse, con man. https://tokeneconomy.co/the-analysis-filecoin-doesnt-want-yo...
johnmarcus··on Ask HN: Is RSS dead?
In my experience, the rss feed of so many blog sights is often so broken that it makes it challenging to use, and Soni abondon it every time I try to use it meaningfully.
johnmarcus··on What Sets Us Apart: Filecoin’s Proof System
If the market trades Filecoins too high, won't it become a cost burden to those wanting the service? And so then I will leave Filecoin, and there won't much data to store. Until you fix price Filecoin, the technical market will be sullied by the financial markets.

As an example, if my ec2 prices went up in line with Amazon stock, I would be paying 5x the cost compared to z few years ago - which means I would have left to digital ocean, and AWS would lack customers. Lagged hype would falsely bolster the stock price.

It's why this decentralized bullshit doesn't work - in the end the greed of it's founders/majority holders destroy it.

johnmarcus··on What Sets Us Apart: Filecoin’s Proof System
As long as Filecoins is traded on a market, and not tied to actual cpu/bandwidth/storage costs, then if will ALWAYS be more expensive then AWS (and alternatives).
johnmarcus··on What Sets Us Apart: Filecoin’s Proof System
Gun is currently a pile of shit. Anyone saying otherwise hasn't used it. The sole founder and developer is a very nice person, but it's the reality of Gun tech right now.
johnmarcus··on What Sets Us Apart: Filecoin’s Proof System
Like other cryptos, Filecoins founders don't get rich off existing and usually better solutions.
johnmarcus··on “Let’s use Kubernetes.” Now you have eight problems
Lol. I've been using k8 for 5+ years and am currently interviewing for more 'traditional' sys admin roles. The number of traditional problems I don't have by running even a small k8 cluster has become even more obvious as I go through the process. For every alternative you may suggest, I can point out dozens of problems you can run into that are solved with k8s. Just like any other operations tool, yes, it takes time and effort to learn...that's why sys admins exist. I always find these posts by non-sys admins humourous. Devs often have so little respect for the knowledge base required to maintain a stable, secure, scalable, and flexible system. It ain't nothing, no matter the tool you use.
johnmarcus··on Remote access to production infrastructure (death to the VPN)
I love Pritunl. Have been using it for 5 years. It's super easy to setup, maybe takes an hour the first time and like 15 minutes once you have done it.
johnmarcus··on Remote access to production infrastructure (death to the VPN)
Meh, this sounds like it's paid for by okta. It also doesn't cover the real use case scenario of vpns - non-technical folks need to access internal services. What's presented is a reasonable approach for ssh control. Oh, and I'm pretty sure Cloud Passage has a port-knocking based solution in the real world which also gives 2fa access for ssh.
johnmarcus··on Economists study what happens when people stop using Facebook
this is true of any poor online habit people develop though, i don't think it has too much in particular to do with Facebook.

If you asked Reddit or Hacker News readers to do the same, I almost guarantee similar or the same results.

johnmarcus··on Cloudflare silently deleted my DNS records
Cloudflare Entrprise sales pissed me off so much the last time I dealt with them that I literally registered "cancelcloudflare.com/net/org". We didn't want to renew there $25k enterprise support for a website that got 50 hits a month. It was embarrassing (for Cloudflare) how incompetent their Enterise Sales rep was. I would rather pay to host my own cache layer then ever have to deal with them again, free or otherwise.
johnmarcus··on We use Kubernetes and spot instances to reduce EC2 billing up to 80%
this is why i love google cloud over aws these days - i can get that cost saving with doing none of the work nor making any of the commitment. It's usually that commitment business hate, imho.
johnmarcus··on DoChat – a Dockerized WeChat PC Windows client for Linux
the novelty of volume mounting the /tmp/.X11-unix to get an actual ui is neat in itself. nice work
johnmarcus··on Show HN: CAVI, how video sharing should be
What will you do about hate speech, which isn't technically illegal?

Most video views are from non-subscribers, and rarely from paid subscribers. How will stay afloat given the cost of video hosting?

johnmarcus··on Chrome deploys deep-linking in latest build despite privacy concerns
But if it had the anchor 'cancer', couldn't you infer the same from the url alone? These examples seem highly contrived.
johnmarcus··on Terminal V2 – Build, deploy, and host websites and apps on IPFS
Also, your checking your shitcoins, not your email. Blickchainers love sending out newsletters, aka, spam.
johnmarcus··on Terminal V2 – Build, deploy, and host websites and apps on IPFS
It's remarkably high, considering how few companies are using it.
johnmarcus··on Show HN: Identity management with end-to-end encryption
I can't tell what the offering is here. Is this an sso platform? Or alternative to saml for my app?
johnmarcus··on Terminal V2 – Build, deploy, and host websites and apps on IPFS
Meh, not actually released yet, just a beta mailing list you can sign up for. No thanks.
johnmarcus··on Terminal V2 – Build, deploy, and host websites and apps on IPFS
Lol, that's ironic considering how prolific spam is in the blockchain world.
johnmarcus··on Mate Desktop 1.24
I have been using gnome 3 on zorin and popos for a few months without issue. What am I missing that everyone here seems to think it's disfunctional?
