johnl··on Ask HN: Great books you read in 2009?
For non technical easy reads you might try:

River of America Books (History of specific Rivers)------ American Trails Series (History of specific Trails)------ Great Game - Peter Hopkirk------ Black Lamb & Gray Falcon - Rebecca West - About Yugoslavia---- Lyndon Johnson - Robert Caro - (3 books)

johnl··on Ask HN: Review my app: Search expired/available short domain names
Was going to suggest a feedback/comment section but I see you already have it. An excellent way of getting responses from the end user.
johnl··on Beyond PageRank: Learning with Content and Networks
Yep, good place to start if you want to research the subject further, lots of avenues to take all in one spot.
johnl··on How Not To Promote Your New Startup
I would have liked the article to go into more depth about his rejections and if he used the rejection feedback to change his marketing strategy. My guess is when things start heading downhill it all turns into personal problems so I would ignore that stuff in the analysis.
johnl··on Things startups do and don't need
If I like the people I am working around then most of that stuff is nice but not necessary, except maybe for the back and the chair thing. I would add a quick commute in the first list and a work at home option.
johnl··on The 'Israelification' of airports: High security, little bother
High security, little bother, totally worthless. Pick another country that doesn't have the services or pick a different target that is as spectacular and your security becomes worthless. Put in place a consistent security system that is consistent with the threat.
johnl··on Matt Blaze: How unpredictable screening helps terrorists
Random usually ends up being discrimination so I would go with a set of more stable rules that apply to everyone.
johnl··on Make a Mess, Clean it Up
Sounds like this means you can get successful by failing? OK by me.
johnl··on California: Failed State
I would say failed bureaucracy, not failed state.
johnl··on The Sad Tale Of Totlol
Using a API means you are working for whomever is on the other side. Ebay ran with the store concept and profited by it. YouTube should create a store "model" to license to share profits from use of any API. Large companies usually cut their own throat by thinking they can out maneuver smaller companies.
johnl··on Programmer Conned CIA, Pentagon Into Buying Bogus Anti-Terror Code
If I want to get myself up to speed on an issue, idea, or problem I examine the issue from as many angles as possible, then start narrowing my focus. Some of my "first round" selections taken out of context might look pretty bad but give me the necessary feedback that I am on track and what is reality and what is not. It's really the money that I find bothersome.
johnl··on The Arrogant VC: Why VCs are disliked by entrepreneurs
Sounds sort of like any business deal where you have to sell yourself as part of the transaction. Coming in with a better attitude might help, Think of the process as a non contact boxing match instead of a show and tell.
johnl··on A Ponzi scheme that works
What makes the Ponzi scheme work is strong property rights supported by a large middle class.
johnl··on People will pay for content
Good question. You would think that competition and ease of entry would bring down the price of content on a particular subject down to a format level. sort of a Moore's Law of ebooks. First one in makes out good but not si good over any length of time.
johnl··on The Top Ten IPO Candidates For 2010
Sources of income are ad revenue and niche market consumer sales it looks like. No surprises.
johnl··on Our Google Government
Yes, seems a bit one sided, Google should be able handle technology advances fast and cheaper than the government. Security, access issues etc, should be spec'ed like everything else in the government.
johnl··on Ask HN: What magazines do you subscribe to?
Economist Businessweek Fortune Wired Business 2.0 Inc Fast Company Scientific American SFO Golf magazine Golf Digest Technology Review

Ranked in no order.

johnl··on Cofounders
Sounds like the article reinforces the same checks and balances that the U.S. government is based upon, why the supreme court has all those judges and terms of elected officials are staggered. The founders force themselves to seek the middle ground. Pretty Good.
johnl··on The most important website for the future of the Internet over the next 5 years
I agree, sounds scary.
johnl··on How Duke Nukem Forever Failed: Unlimited time, budget and ambition
That why it's a good thing to get rid of the founder when the company gets to a certain point some times. Broussard was never really running a business. It may have been a lot of fun, but never really a business.
johnl··on Sugar: The Bitter Truth (UCSF lecture)
If you are going to see grandparents this holiday, a good discussion might be to ask them about their sugar consumption, prevalent health problems now and then, and compare those to your own. Bet there is a big difference.
johnl··on The official term for the smell after it rains
I knew we sprayed bananas and tomatoes to ripen during transit to market but never figured plants used the same technique to delay a process (spraying the ground with an oil) to retard seed germination until it rains. Pretty neat if I read the article correctly.
johnl··on Tea And Coffee Cut Type 2 Diabetes Risk
That's my guess also, cut refined sugar from your diet any way you can to reduce chances of type 2 diabetes.
johnl··on When Developers Work Late, Should Manager Stay or Go?
The manager should stay, explain why he is staying, announce specific hours he will pop in for updates (he may have to report to others too), stay out of the coders way, don't make additional distractions, and order dinner.
johnl··on Intelligence Improperly Collected on U.S. Citizens
Doesn't sound good at first glance. In defense of their actions is that by studying different groups (and I mean that in the mathematical sense) you will make whatever you are looking for stand out much clearer. Creating patterns of each group might make forecasting their actions a bit easier and be able to pick up an unknown group within the general population. Just my thoughts.
johnl··on Is Facebook a Brand that You Can Trust?
Part of the problem is that Facebook isn't really a brand yet. They are still trying to define how the site is going to make money. Dragging the customer kicking and screaming usually doesn't do it. Sounds like those guys should learn some card games so they understand the value of a good finesse.
johnl··on Browser Size, from Google Labs
Good analysis. I think they should qualify it by content. A non-ad-driven site like "donate" should have the button on the top and the supporting argument below. A ad-driven site like the file sharing sites should have the button on the bottom so ads are at least scanned on your way to ther bottom.
johnl··on Drunk Cycling
I think the article misses the point. Drunk drivers kill other people. Drunk walkers kill only themselves.
johnl··on Rock Solid HTML Emails
I think the guy has a monkey on his back. But I agree with him about emails being both profitable and the importance of making the end users experience a smooth one.
johnl··on Demand Media wants to produce 1 million pieces of content a month
Yeh, the problem will be how to find them. If the saying "crisis equals opportunity" is true then it sounds like the internet is ready for a ycombinator type ranking system that's independent of a Google ranking system.
