A software engineer who built Maestro. See the case study at https://maestro-framework.github.io/.

After Maestro, worked with a fast-growing startup (Re:amaze) and that later got acquired by a large company (GoDaddy).

Then worked to build the future of financial infrastructure at Prime Trust.

Finally, working to break down language barriers with DeepL, the best online translator powered by AI (better than google translate, widely recognized as the industry leader).

People are richer than ever, the world is safer than ever, yet we're entering a demographic trend mirroring that of medieval europe.

People famously have different stated and revealed preferences. They claim one thing, and yes they fully believe it, even if the evidence is extremely strong to the contrary.

It has less to do with skill than it does with luck now. AI has greatly evened the playing field between the less-skilled and the more-skilled.

If your views changed that quickly, then I don't know what to say. Your priors definitely need adjusting, and perhaps consider the way you evaluate the future.

It was pretty clear even 2 years ago. Now it's happening right on schedule.

I reached acceptance Spring 2025. That's when I accepted I will eventually be outsourced, and I need to pivot. 1.5 years later, I'm a commercial pilot, and as I continue training, will hopefully be able to pivot here soon.

This is what really made me think to my self, "holy shit". I can't believe not more people are noticing and talking about this. Unless perhaps they didn't actually read the README, and are just talking about what they heard from someone who also didn't read it?

Yes, I live in an arid western state. It's obvious that you don't from your naive question here.

In many states it doesn't matter, but out in the arid west, water is constantly a crisis item.

Check out the Cirrus Autoland feature in their aircraft. They are all small personal aircraft, but the tech is pretty cool. Will talk to ATC and fully auto-land for you in the event of an emergency where the pilot is incapacitated.

johnisom2001··on Ask HN: Who wants to be hired? (September 2024)

  Remote: in-person, remote, or hybrid
  Willing to relocate: no
Technologies: Ruby on Rails, Postgres, Typescript, React, C#/.NET

I'm a mid-senior level software engineer and a caring human. I am highly proficient in Ruby, Rails, TypeScript/JavaScript/Node.js, SQL, fairly proficient in React, C#/.NET. I'm a product-oriented generalist who masters whatever tool he uses to deliver customer value and build great product.

I would invite you to read my resume and give me a call. You'll notice I have 4 years of experience, but what I have managed to do with that experience has been exceptional. What most people do in about 8 years, I have condensed down to 4. I've always been highly valued by my teammates.

To get this out of the way: I left Prime Trust because the company went bankrupt, and I am leaving DeepL to move back to Salt Lake City to be with my partner. Both are (were) extraordinary companies that I would have loved to spend years at. Unfortunately, sometimes life takes you another direction. I'm looking for the company I can help grow and grow with for the next several years.

I'm a mid-senior level software engineer with an unusual and impressive background. I am highly proficient in Ruby, Rails, TypeScript/JavaScript/Node.js, SQL, React, C#/.NET, and many other technologies. I thrive most when solving interesting problems relating to the infrastructure of the company. By that, I mean the behind-the-scenes stuff that makes it work--internal ledgers and other systems, encryption, just the services that do their thing to make the business run smoothly. I'm also very happy working on product work, working as a fullstack engineer for most of my career.

I would invite you to give me a call and read my resume. You'll notice I have 4 years of experience, but what I have managed to do with that experience has been exceptional. Looking for pay in the range of $150k-$180k, but will consider other pay for the right team.

Backend/service layer Software Engineer with rich experience, most recently in the fintech sector working with crypto & fiat custodian Prime Trust.

---

I'm looking to relocate for an awesome in-person or hybrid team, with a very high preference for France, Belgium, or Montréal, a high preference for any other EU country, NYC, Chicago, and a mild preference for Denver, Portland, SFBA, DC, or Boston.

I am a native speaker of English and have an intermediate level in French.

I am an American citizen and thus require a visa to work outside of the US.

---

About me: I'm a solidly mid-senior level software engineer with an unusual and impressive background. I am highly proficient in Ruby, Rails, TypeScript/JavaScript/Node.js, SQL, and many other technologies (see my resume). I thrive most when solving interesting problems relating to the infrastructure of the company. By that, I mean the behind-the-scenes stuff that makes it work--internal ledgers and other systems, encryption, just the services that do their thing to make the business run smoothly. I'm also very happy working on product work.

If you see my resume, you'll notice I have a decent amount of YOE, but my actual experience far exceeds the number of "years" that I have. Everyone learns and produces at a different pace, and some, like me, can achieve and master in 3 years what the typical dev will in 8 YOE. I credit this to my willingness to jump into things as well as my solid fundamentals I built up.

Read the resume. Send me an email. You'll see what I mean.

johnisom2001··on Rewriting the Ruby parser
This is big. Ruby syntax errors are some of the most frustrating things to track down. So much worse than C-like languages like JavaScript.

I'm glad to see big steps towards this.

johnisom2001··on Rewriting the Ruby parser
This couldn't be further from the truth. There are so many people using Ruby, so many modern companies deciding to use it and so many large companies that continue to use it.

The demand for Ruby developers is higher than the supply.

You think it's bad now, imagine 5 years from now. This version of Copilot is just the beginning. Will you care about skill rot when everyone else around you knows the skills to effectively use the new generative AI models and is producing 5x?
