johndoe0815··on Europe's most dangerous cities according to citizens
Is this another low point of AI slop?

First, the selection criteria for the cities covered in the article are completely unclear - for example, there's not a single city in Germany mentioned.

The text itself is also inconsistent. "Four of the top five cities — Bradford, Coventry, Birmingham, and London — are located in the United Kingdom." However, London is on place #15 according to the data presented.

It's probably best to ignore this drivel. Though Bradford felt pretty bad when I was living around the corner in Leeds a decade ago... :)

johndoe0815··on Dark patterns: Buying a Bahncard at Deutsche Bahn
“Deutsche Bahn, the fully state owned railway company, is a well liked company”.

Eh, nope. It’s a horribly mismanaged entity with permanent delays, bad service and outrageous pricing…

johndoe0815··on Konrad Zuse's Helix Tower [pdf]
Zuse invented many more things than the first computer and first programming language - for example, an "Apparatus for controlling headlights by counterlight" already in 1958!

johndoe0815··on Alibaba cloud FPGA: the $200 Kintex UltraScale+
Is there any RAM on the board except for the on-chip block RAMs?

The ebay listing mentions 128 MB, but I wonder if this can be trusted since some other information in the "item specifics" overview is clearly bogus ("7-Function Digital Multimeter Shield").

johndoe0815··on UNIX99, a Unix-like OS for the TI-99/4A
Related - there's also a 6th Edition Unix port to "big iron" TI990 minicomputers by Dave Pitts, which are based on either the TMS9900 or discrete TTL implementations of it:

https://cozx.com/dpitts/ti990.html

You can find a lot of additional tools there, e.g. an assembler, a GCC port, a TI990 simulator and lots of disk images of and applications for TI's DX10/DNOS OS for the 990 series.

johndoe0815··on Macintosh System 7 Ported To x86 With LLM Help in 3 days
This is _not_ a port of the (leaked) System 7 sources from 68k/PPC to x86. It rather seems to be reverse engineered from the 68k binaries.

From the project's README.md: "This is a reimplementation project for educational and preservation purposes."

See https://zenodo.org/records/17196870 for the related paper:

"we reconstructed a bootable prototype of Apple System 7.1 directly from 68k binaries in three days"

"We present an AI-assisted reverse engineering framework that achieves dramatic speedups—on the order of hundreds of times faster than traditional manual methods—by orchestrating specialized agents for evidence curation, struct recovery, and code drafting. Using this approach, we recreated a bootable prototype of Apple System 7.1 from binary analysis in just 3 days."

johndoe0815··on Why Apple Is Quietly Rewriting iOS in a Language You've Never Heard Of
Apple spent a lot of effort adapting or creating languages, starting with Clascal/Object Pascal (or Woz' SWEET16 as an alternative high-level assembler-like intermediate language and 16-bit virtual machine) over Objective C (bought from Brad Cox and Tom Love and significantly extended/changed over the years) to Swift. They also used these languages to implement critical parts of the system software, e.g. for the Lisa or the NeXTstep ObjC-based driver framework.

So this speculation has quite some credibility - but, as the author states, I think this is still in an early stage and will take quite some time to become mature.

There are other people designing their own system-level language and OS, e.g. Drew DeVaults Hare and the Helios microkernel and Bunnix Unix clone based on Hare - this is a single person effort, so given Apple's resources, this is definitely feasible.

johndoe0815··on Ask HN: Which used MacBook Silicon to buy?
The M3/M4 chips are not yet supported by Asahi Linux (which serves as the basis for all Linux versions on Apple Silicon), so you are limited to M1 and M2 (and the respective Pro/Max) SoCs.

An overview of the supported devices can be found at https://asahilinux.org/fedora/#device-support

Both the Macbook Pro M1 as well as the Macbook Air M1 are still pretty great devices. I would recommend to go for a 16 GB version since RAM (and SSD) cannot be upgraded.

If you need external video (monitor/projector etc.), you need to go with the Pro model, since the Air doesn't have an HDMI port and video over USB-C is not yet supported.

johndoe0815··on DHL: German postal service to suspend transport of business parcels to US
Yes, it's exactly this.

"Due to new customs regulations, DHL is significantly restricting parcel shipping from Germany to the USA. Effective August 22, Deutsche Post and DHL Paket will no longer be able to accept and transport parcels and so-called International Goods Mail from business customers to the USA, the company announced." The NetBSD developers have a significantly more sane approach.

johndoe0815··on Can't do business in CA: Gas may spike to $8/gal as 2 major refineries shut down

johndoe0815··on Show HN: Relix: A Unix-like OS based on MIT's xv6
Nice!

Note that this is based on an older version of xv6 which was written for x86 machines. Recent versions of xv6 run on RISC-V instead, so support for RISC-V would be nice to have in Relix, too.

johndoe0815··on Desktop Pictures taken by Steve Jobs (2020)
Whow, the Rock Garden picture seems to be taken in Ryoanji temple in Kyoto.

I visited Kyoto last year and took a very similar picture of the rock garden. I met Steve Jobs once at WWDC in California in the 2000s, so it's interesting to see that Steve Jobs was standing in the same place as I was standing twenty years later...

johndoe0815··on SSD Upgrade for Mac Mini M4
I installed a 1TB SSD upgrade (from aliexpress) in my M4 Mini and broke the power button cable while disassembling the machine and it seems I'm not the only one [1]. So be especially careful with this miniature connector when opening the system.

You cannot order a replacement cable separately, but the bottom plate with cable is available from Apple's self service repair store [2] as "Mac mini M4 Antenna Plate 923-11056". I think I paid around 27€ for the part.
