johndhi··on I quit OpenAI because its culture is broken
Its certainly worth considering...
johndhi··on OpenAI safety leader quits, warning AI company's culture is 'broken'
Lol this was crazy I hadn't heard this before
johndhi··on OpenAI GPT–6 Astra breaks Enigma message that has resisted solution since 2005
I'd be curious to see whether these models can create new forms of unbreakable encryption themselves!
johndhi··on Amazon vs. Perplexity – U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit
Sounds cool. Needs network effects of lots of highly rated stores to succeed, I think.
johndhi··on Mark Zuckerberg: "Cambridge Analytica" (2017)
What evidence shows he wanted this? Why would he play the victim internally?
johndhi··on Discovery of a new OpenAI agent message board
both can be true:

-the US gov't is stupid and overly aggressive and absurd

-Anthropic for reasons no one can quite conceive keeps describing every product release of theirs as an imminent threat to civilization (and simultaneously keeps pushing the market forward as fast as they possibly can).

johndhi··on Mom gets 6-month suspended sentence for letting 5-year-old walk to the pond
I'm sympathetic with this sentiment but surely it's pretty rare the law actually gets involved? Our kids play outside a lot and no cops have ever raised an eyebrow (except for at our crazy drunk of a neighbor, where eyebrow raising is appropriate).
johndhi··on Uber shuts operations in Nigeria and Uganda with immediate effect
How does growth potential relate to legal enforcement?
johndhi··on Google avoids a breakup of its ad tech business
I'm more on your side than most but surely you don't think zero antitrust enforcement is best for our country?
johndhi··on I co-founded Burning Man. The festival has lost its soul
I started going in 2002 and have friends who have gone every year since then.

There has been a meme that burning man sucks now and used to be better that entire time.

That doesn't mean the meme is false. It definitely has changed. There's an article in sfgate today that quotes the head of the Death Guild (Thunderdome) camp as saying something like, do people want to carry on the traditions their parents had, or invent their own?

I thought that was a great question. Both are valid paths.

johndhi··on Building a backyard office, the build and cost breakdown
Hmm. I have a decent shed outside my house and my current office (in the house) is decent but when kids get home it gets a bit harder.

I wonder if I can convert an existing shed...

johndhi··on Being ambitious and being a dad
A lot of good stuff in this thread. The party I'll add and haven't seen yet is that I think being a dad has made me a better people manager at work. I think about humans more than ever and that has helped make me more efficient at work
johndhi··on Grok Bot
Do you have to pay the companies for a second login for the bot...?
johndhi··on Most countries provide between 20 and 40 paid days off
I guess thinking from first principles probably the ideal is neither government mandating days off nor their behind terribly hard to come by.

Better imo would be - if I personally accomplished something meaningful and valuable and 'earned' time, then I am strongly incentivized to take time. Also it taking time will help my health and wellness meaningfully then I should also be incentivized to do so.

But that seems impossible to setup if we aren't all our own business owning entrepreneurs.

johndhi··on Only 8.9% of sites block AI crawlers, but 94.8% are never cited in AI answers
Makes sense! Good point.

You're effectively reminding us that brands don't get understand well how to influence ai seo

johndhi··on We Gave GPT 5.6 Sol a Real Business. It Lied, Spammed, and Lost $447
sounds about what you'd expect from a person?
johndhi··on The coolest use for the Vision Pro
Toolbox minefield made me laugh.

I guess I'm in the .001%: my father in law built homes for a living and built his own home and every piece of furniture in it himself. Everything lasts longer and works better than in professionally built homes in my experience. He's a real marvel.

I suspect there may not many more people with his skillset after his generation passes.

johndhi··on Kill The Cookie Banner
how about: -if we really don't like targeted advertising, just outlaw it -then let websites do whatever they want with our cookies so long as they aren't targeted advertising

instead of building websites and writing laws over the span of decades that just seem to want to ban targeted advertising but don't actually do it. FFS.

johndhi··on Who's afraid of Chinese models?
Good Lord I hadn't ever heard of the mai lai massacre. Just spend 10 mins reading about it. Christ.
johndhi··on Who's afraid of Chinese models?
Is Gemma worse?
johndhi··on Governments, companies, nonprofits should invest in free, open source AI [pdf]
Good idea! I'd never heard that. Very interesting.

But wouldn't this help china build models just as good as ours immediately? Wouldn't it make the investment in training a model worth a lot less?

johndhi··on Meta building cloud business to sell excess AI capacity
I don't really think this necessarily means demand is limited.

It just means demand is consolidating to winners. There's no denying openai and anthropic and maybe Google have a ton of demand. The fact that xai and meta do not does not mean no demand exists.

johndhi··on Meta building cloud business to sell excess AI capacity
Good take! I buy it.
johndhi··on Meta building cloud business to sell excess AI capacity
It's obsolete for training but is it obsolete for inference?
johndhi··on What happened after 2k people tried to hack my AI assistant
Gemini says: "It would cost approximately $6.25 to $30.00 to have Claude Opus 4.6 respond to 10,000 emails, assuming a typical 200-word input and 50-word output per email."
johndhi··on Hey Nico, you didn't vibe code your data room but stole it from Papermark

johndhi··on What happened after 2k people tried to hack my AI assistant
What makes it expensive to reply to an email?

Customer service software regularly uses AI responses for email. Is the issue that your agent using the claw for more than needed (like it's clicking send rather than just accessing an API?)

johndhi··on Anthropic updates their terms to verify age or identity
Huh? Limited uptime means you can't write projects with it? I assume downtime means you can't host on it ...
