Thanks a lot. I've been looking forward to the book since hearing you speak in Boston at Xconomy. Can't wait to read it.
johncoogan··on Android Economics
This is a great analysis. I would be very interested to see the standard deviation of Android revenues/device/yr compared with Facebook ARPU. Obviously this is laughably unobtainable, but it's fun to speculate about who has more upside compared to the mean. I wonder what the 95th percentile generates?

On a side note, has anyone thought about what Mail.ru might do before and after the Facebook IPO? Sorry if that's off topic.

I couldn't find one either. I know a few guys who might be interested in helping out with an Open Source version though. Anyone want in?
johncoogan··on The Rise and Fall of Bitcoin
This is a fairly old article at this point but I think it's cool that Ashish posted it. Despite being a bumpy ride, I think Bitcoin confirmed some pretty crazy hypotheses and set the stage for some pretty incredible things.

I would love to see the Bitcoin model paired with some of the ideas Muhammad Yunus has been espousing recently. His point that creating a sustainable social enterprise requires creating wealth within communities makes perfect sense to me, but as long as that wealth-creation relies on direct peer-to-peer lending, the potential for usurious lending will exist. I would love to see a company administer micro-finance algorithmically and then distribute equity in the company through a cryptological model similar to Bitcoin.

The standard lifecycle of a company typically involves raising large financing rounds prior to major expansions. Uncertainty about dilution adds additional risk to equity investing and an infinitely expanding system may be able to solve this problem. Naturally, this would do nothing to solve the problems inherent to relative valuation, and just like Bitcoin, such a company would likely see very choppy pricing. Nevertheless, it would be nice to cure some of the problems caused by inflation / dilution.

johncoogan··on Why I Am Leaving Goldman Sachs
Great story, thanks for sharing. I spent last summer at a hedge fund and found myself dangerously close to becoming one of the prototypical insecure college graduates you so aptly describe. It really is remarkable the delusions of graduation that emanate from a desk with even the most paltry of P&L's for the week. I'm excited to see what might come of the furious yet agile rage directed towards the financial sector. Square and the like seem to have the credit card companies on their heels but revolution in IB still seems distant. Then again, agility and innovation are often underestimated.

I too see accounting as a hurdle but think customer validation might suffer as well. "Get off the boat" actually has a nicer ring than "get out of the building" but will obviously be harder. As much as I love hackathons, there are fringe benefits to mixing with normal-folk on occasion. I can't explain how much I've learned from overhearing women explain Pintrest to one-another.
johncoogan··on Spectrum Crunch: The cell phone industry hits its limits
I would love to know more information about this article. Any subject matter experts out there? The article lacks a solid technical background.
johncoogan··on Skills aren't taught at university; we develop them to cope with university
I couldn't agree with this more, the education system seems to obsess over structure. Concepts get clumped together into classes, which are clumped again into majors. Prerequisites seem to cripple broad intellectual development and force specialization.

I do see the importance of this changing, with increasing weight being given to public work shared over a blog or Github vs. academic transcripts. Hopefully institutional education can evolve to help individuals learn how to search, triage and analyze in a given field.
