Interview of Ola Fadiran, founder of ChipMango, the first semiconductor design company built in sub-Saharan Africa.
johncole··on Ask HN: Is GitHub Fried Today?
I knew it.
johncole··on Ask HN: Is GitHub Fried Today?
It's not really down . . . it's just unreliable?
johncole··on Credibility is the barrier to entry in silicon
Fair point, that is pretty much the answer I’m finding for most open source solutions in hardware, you make your money on implementation and support.
johncole··on Credibility is the barrier to entry in silicon
If you intend to build a physically chip, short answer is you don’t. You can’t really build it without Taiwan at this point.
johncole··on Credibility is the barrier to entry in silicon
I think the EU is making credible attempts to change this.
johncole··on Credibility is the barrier to entry in silicon
I think this story is the exception. The supply chain time for hardware is so long, designers are picking their chips out months and years in advance. So you really do have to trust that the supplier will be around to support the hardware in a few months or a few years.
johncole··on Credibility is the barrier to entry in silicon
Thanks, how could I have made it stronger?
johncole··on Venture Debt for Deep Tech: Financing the Future
The company declares bankruptcy, the money is gone. Same as an equity investment.
johncole··on Making Claude a Chemist
Agree here, chem may be more complex than language, and not as definable as language. I think this is the realm that physical ai will overlap with.
johncole··on Apple Watch for Your Kids
This is a fantastic option when the only other viable option is to get them a phone. They can text parents, they can be tracked, but they can’t watch stupid YouTube or TikTok videos, and they can’t participate in 95% of the stuff that harms kids at that age.

What’s become the “irresponsible norm” is to not give your kids a phone, which is crazy, because it’s just giving tech companies the ability to manipulate kids.

johncole··on The Russian who invented semiconductors 25 years before the USA
Australias probably has more to worry about with the snakes and sharks.
johncole··on The Russian who invented semiconductors 25 years before the USA
Dictatorships are always more efficient in the short run.
johncole··on The Russian who invented semiconductors 25 years before the USA
It provided the above to a select few that thought the way they were supposed to. It also did NOT provide to a few million that didn’t think the correct way.
johncole··on The Russian who invented semiconductors 25 years before the USA
Extreme subsidy between the competitors.
johncole··on The Russian who invented semiconductors 25 years before the USA
Favorite claim they made?
johncole··on The Russian who invented semiconductors 25 years before the USA
Fascinating, that’s really interesting.
johncole··on The Russian who invented semiconductors 25 years before the USA
I probably over exaggerated there. But it does seem he was earlier than the team that’s been given credit for it, no?
johncole··on The Russian who invented semiconductors 25 years before the USA
They will never be Chinese or considered Chinese. Has China become more welcoming to foreigners lately?
johncole··on The Russian who invented semiconductors 25 years before the USA
I don’t think Microsoft is sending people to the gulag because they didn’t have enough zeroes behind their idea.
johncole··on The Russian who invented semiconductors 25 years before the USA
Do Chinas state subsidies encourage innovation?

This story is a great example of the system taking a brilliant person, and stomping their opportunity down because they were from the wrong class. But replace class with whatever you like.

johncole··on The Russian who invented semiconductors 25 years before the USA
Who provides such an economic system?
johncole··on How do you build a semiconductor company on something that's free?
How do you build a company on something that's free? Daniel Schultz, founder of aesc silicon explains.
johncole··on Why were semiconductors invented in the USA? [YouTube]
1. This was a contributing factor for sure. 2. Antitrust investigations were covered in the talk. 3. This definitely spurred US production and development for sure.

But are these stereotypes or just contributing factors?

johncole··on Why were semiconductors invented in the USA? [YouTube]
I've never heard that theory before, that we had the best electricity production?
johncole··on Why were semiconductors invented in the USA? [YouTube]
Why are these lazy stereotypes?
