john_alan··on AMD unveils Ryzen Pro 8000-series processors
They are powerful, but I agree with you, it's nice to be able to run Goliath locally, but it's a lot slower than my 4070.

john_alan··on GoFetch: New side-channel attack using data memory-dependent prefetchers
If you look at the cryptokit API docs the Secure Enclave essentially only supports P-256. Which is maybe why they didn’t include ECC crypto in the examples.
john_alan··on GoFetch: New side-channel attack using data memory-dependent prefetchers
I’ve often wondering how are these bits set?

Like can you do it from Swift? Or need assembly?

john_alan··on GoFetch: New side-channel attack using data memory-dependent prefetchers
On reading it seems a lib like libsodium can simply set the disable bit prior to cryptographic operations that are sensitive on M3 and above.

Also looks like they need to predetermine aspects of the key.

Very cool but I don’t think it looks particularly practical.

Very cool thanks!
john_alan··on Apple Virtualization Framework
Isn’t it really hard to use though? Like you need decomposed Linux bits.

john_alan··on FTX Collapse takes toll on the Bahamas
Cryptocurrency is by definition, an open transparent market and as such not a Ponzi scheme. Quite literally by definition.

Also many of the current cryptocurrencies run on tiny amounts of energy (Algorand, Cardano).

Some of the brightest minds in applied mathematics and cryptography are working on this stuff. Maybe you should be a little more open minded.

Edit: downvoted without any discourse. This site is so strangely anti crypto, stay smug, let’s see how it works out for you.

john_alan··on Blockchain Is Dangerous Nonsense
By definition cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin, Monero, Ether etc, are not a pyramid-scheme.
john_alan··on Blockchain Is Dangerous Nonsense
What a nothing burger of an article.

The author cannot see value in self-sovereign, censorship resistant, permission-less monetary systems, fine, however, to claim "crypto" is dangerous nonsense because "fraud" is ridiculous.

> As code is written by humans, it’s seldom actually infallible.

Absolutely true, it doesn't have to be perfect, it has to be good enough. With over a decade as a high value target, most serious crypto projects have proved their code is the latter.

john_alan··on $625M worth of ETH drained on Axie Infinity's Ronin Network
Precisely. Not sure why the pseudo intellectuals of HN don’t get it.
john_alan··on $625M worth of ETH drained on Axie Infinity's Ronin Network
You need to spend more time thinking about this. You’ll end up realising that the value lies in self sovereign, permissionless money. Tech like Monero. The debt ceiling grows every day.
