john2010··on Self-improvement is embracing your messy, imperfect life
If you read carefully, the article meant that by accepting 'the hard truth' you have more chance to change.

Quotes:

“The curious paradox is that when I accept myself just as I am, then I can change.”

Paradoxically, accepting that you’re just not a confident person and you’re always going to feel a little off around other people will begin to make you feel more comfortable and less anxious around others.

> If you're getting brute forced, learn how to set up and run blocklistd or fail2ban.

What about updating OS/packages/CVE when on holiday? Note that many CVEs are usually sent only to top-tier providers.

john2010··on Google Play banned my highly rated app with no real justification
> See popular apps: Amazon, Bumble etc …nobody's on device app title reflects the apps functionality, they just use their brand name)

Whether or not it is correct/ethical but do not compare your app to Amazon. They are different, big, <add much more>.

My only guess is some one made a clone of your app; and is perhaps 'reporting' your app. And Google's AI is responding to you. (And if you are regular hn user... you know the results, sadly).

john2010··on WhatsApp – Security of End-to-End Encrypted Backups [pdf]
Automatic backups do not include any images or videos. They remain just unencrypted.

> Many non-tech people I know that are not aware of this have just come to terms with the fact that phone storage just runs out quicker than it did before, and old phones just lag at 2am for mysterious reasons.

Non-tech people get pissed when one smiley message is lost. So for all non-hn people automatic backups are a boon. I know this as we run a free repair-cafe - and help people migrate data from old phones.

john2010··on My love-hate affair with technology
Sadly people with such opinions work at slack/salesforce putting up walls (becoming totally incompatible to IRC) locking user data.
john2010··on AWS adds an extra 5.5M IPv4 addresses
I know few universities that still use static ipv4 for computer pools. The admins claim easy for us to monitor for misuse.
john2010··on A Storage Crisis
Perhaps it is SMR drive. Ubuntu or linux is generally poor at sleeping USB. Ubuntu always mounts at /media/username/drivename - I am sure something is wrong with your setup.

you are absolutely right. Even a google employee uses lineageos to avoid tracking but I am sure they deliver the code to millions of innocent...

What a strange ToS:

We can also change the fees for our services (other than those you have already contracted and paid for) at any time if we give you notice.

10.2 make you pay, on demand, default interest on any amount you owe us at 10% per annum calculated on a daily basis, from the date when payment was due until the date when payment is actually made by you. You will also need to pay all expenses and costs (including our full legal costs) in connection with us trying to recover any unpaid amount from you.

In circumstances where we cease providing our services for other reasons, we will, if we consider it appropriate, it is reasonably practicable and we are not prevented by law or likely to incur any liability in doing so, give you 30 days' notice to retrieve your data.
Not sure 10.2 is legal in EU?

ideally true. The issue is common person expects things to 'Just Work' - means read/allow contacts.

john2010··on Data Transfer Project by Apple, Facebook, Google, Microsoft, etc.
I wonder how they vet any small companies? Just like stealing/selling Chrome/firefox extensions how will this work if a small company withe nextcloud offers migration - then it is 'acquired' by 'evil' company.

> Q: Why aren’t there more, smaller companies in the Project?

john2010··on India’s new intermediary liability and digital media laws will harm the internet
Does no one in Indian govt think that of where India should go in the long-term (30-50 years). Sure few large Indian companies are with them now. What happens then?

Seems to me this will be a lost opportunity to be a leader (equal leader) in BRICS.

Or do they think that they can be self-sufficient?

john2010··on Are Xiaomi browsers spyware? Yes, they are (2020)
+ 1

also note that the Asian billionaires are learning for people like bezos/gates. In public they may be hate figures - but everyone orders from Amazon. Tax breaks for large companies.

(i.e) use thinktank to pass legislation to make everything they do legal.

john2010··on Are Xiaomi browsers spyware? Yes, they are (2020)
another reason being some eBay/re-sellers buy in low cost places (like India/China) - reinstall EU ROM and sell it at high cost. (Even now many devices in Asian markets come with a label like - Only for India-SIM)
john2010··on Samsung now updates Android for longer than Google does
Too many say that. iOS 14 in 6S. but can you use it like a daily driver and ditch your > 2019 iPhone? It is OK if you are using 6S for email + whatsapp? Any thing more? A typical user has atleast 20 apps - from banking to zoom.

as an open source fan I really like your Nexedi products. I find that https://nayuos.nexedi.com/#install-the-image-on-your-chromeb... is missing.

I work at a regional govt in Germany - we want to transition to local cloud - and think this is great product. If these 'NayuOS" can by synced to our own nextCloud installations. Could you help? Thnx

john2010··on How Huawei controls its employees in Europe

john2010··on The State of FOSS in India
The sad state is that even the most employees of Tech companies from India - >SWITCH (all different companies acronyms) just are not aware of OSS. Even now from UK, when I spoke to my sister (an amazing java programmer in TCS - graduated out of a top uni in Bangalore) about Signal(app) she was surprised, remarking what is the problem with WhatsApp? who cares about OSS? they are constantly looking to see if I can make a buck. Contributing free is something that will need generosity - only after they get rid of some amount of poverty and improve their economic levels.

There was some hope when XDA and Android ROM tended to explode in India, but it is a bit lost. Most ROM-groups locked up asking for PayTM money (equiv. of paypal) for even seeing your github repo. (Think it was a bad thing github gave free private repos - after MS acquisition).

(PS: I am from India)
