john-shaffer··on Carving out a niche as a small artist on Spotify
That's $800/month for a tiny artist that would otherwise be making about $0/month.

> I don't tour, I don't sell merch and I'm not on a major label. I'm just a small indie artist making music in my evenings— and Spotify is making that possible.

In other words, it's a hobby.

john-shaffer··on I Am Deleting the Blog
It seems that by "smart" she meant "knowledgeable", in particular about how things work in her field. Of course people at the top know more (on average) about how the industry works. They are in a position to know.
john-shaffer··on Updating the Git protocol for SHA-256
> If you wanted to even it out to 64 characters, you could create a "modified base-64"...

My go-to encoding is base64url in RFC 4648. It's simply base64 with - instead of + and _ instead of /. In a case like this where the length is known, you can omit the trailing "="s so no escaping is necessary.

john-shaffer··on You download the app and it doesn’t work
Apple has thought of this and every other workaround that I've seen proposed. It's against the "rules", and they will ban you from their store.
john-shaffer··on Amazon added a non-compete after the employee entered the U.S. on an L1B visa
It's a civil matter, not criminal. Extradition is irrelevant.

The states agreed to honor court decisions in other states in Article 4 of the Constitution: "Full Faith and Credit shall be given in each State to the public Acts, Records, and judicial Proceedings of every other State." If a court in Washington says you owe money, it's enforced the same as if it were a court in California.

john-shaffer··on Brave Zoom Competitor
This is false. You have to explicitly find and enable ads on Brave. The vast majority of users probably have no idea that they can see ads.

Have you ever used Brave? Even once?

john-shaffer··on Backblaze B2 Cloud Storage Now Has S3 Compatible APIs
S3's use of separate servers for website hosting is actually very sensible. Options like usage of index.html and error.html only apply on the website servers and won't cause any surprises for people using the service as a key-object store.

That said, I would absolutely not consider using B2 without support for index.html, error.html, and Website-Redirect-Location.

john-shaffer··on 500K bet on rock paper scissors ruled invalid by Quebec court
> I can insist that there is skill in coin toss too.

There is a detailed analysis in 10.3 "How to cheat at coin and die tossing" of E.T. Jaynes's Probability Theory.

john-shaffer··on ClojureScript 1.10.741
That was a bug. It was fixed with this release, and swannodette added a test to ensure the size stays under 10k bytes: https://github.com/clojure/clojurescript/commit/5d64c2a142e5...
john-shaffer··on How to Run Wordpress on AWS
I would not use Wordpress to serve a large site directly unless I had no other choice. You can create a much simpler, faster, scalable and more secure architecture using WP2Static (https://wp2static.com/) to publish static files to an S3 Bucket/CloudFront deployment (or your storage+CDN of choice). WP isn't designed for this type of deployment, but the right plugins (e.g., WP Serverless Forms, WP Offload Media Lite) make it work.

If you run the Wordpress instance locally or otherwise secure it from public access, you don't have to worry about keeping WP and its plugins updated, which saves considerable time and expense. This is my go-to solution whenever a WP install is requested.

john-shaffer··on A Little Clojure
> (first 1 2 3) evaluates to 1, (second 1 2 3) evaluates to 2, and (last 1 2 3) evaluates to – you guessed it – 3.

This is wrong, unfortunately. He probably meant (first '(1 2 3)), etc.

john-shaffer··on How to Set Your Google Data to Self-Destruct
I set this, even though I've blacklisted Google on Firefox. (I just use Chromium if I need to use Gmail). But, how can I stop Google collecting data on my phone? I was initially blocking Google because of censorship, but I can't find any way to control my phone, and it's feeling really personal now.
