john-radio··on US immigration enforcement used AI-powered tool to scan posts derogatory to US
The OP link is blogspam wrapping around reporting from the excellent 404 Media, who just recently struck out on their own as a publication and deserve attention and support: https://www.404media.co/inside-ices-database-derogatory-info...
john-radio··on Python Expertise Level – Self-Assessment
There are a lot of kind of questionable/obscure skills in tiers 2-4, but I think that's fine actually. It's not a software development skill assessment; it purports to be only about "python expertise." There are definitely people out there with strong knowledge of every topic in item 3 and I'd definitely be persuadable that such a person is a "Python expert."

I just worry, when I see a list of things tagged "expert" like this, that people will take it as a learning path, which... Could be good, but there are much straighter paths to learning to be effective as a developer.

john-radio··on OpenAI Preparedness Challenge
That's funny to me because I just [realized that I actually do this a lot](https://signmaker.dev/personal-scripts) in my personal files.
john-radio··on Please Pay for a Year of Nothing
I'm sorry that your gut disagrees with the ethical conclusion that most people, including nearly every musician I have talked to, have arrived at - I know that is a crappy feeling to have - but here we are.
john-radio··on Please Pay for a Year of Nothing
70%/30% doesn't sound bad, if true; that's comparable to what Bandcamp was acclaimed for their fairness in paying their artists, if I recall correclty. I wonder what the "trick" is (if any), because I have to doubt the reality of that number. If you know and talk to musicians, it's almost absolutely unanimous that nobody ever earns a dime from any streams even if you are really popular on their platform.
john-radio··on Please Pay for a Year of Nothing
I think a lot of people intuitively understand that there's a difference between pirating the works of JRR Tolkein, him being wildly successful and not alive anymore, and doing the same to an up-and-coming author who's eating ramen a lot. There's no difference legally, though, which is a great object lesson in how there are sharp topological differences between the world of ethics and the world of human law.

If you pay for Spotify rather than hacking it, you're really not supporting artists financially very much, right? Paying someone a millionth of a dollar to stream their music seems to me like kind of an insult, actually, and recording their song to a cassette from the radio like kind of a compliment.

john-radio··on Ask HN: What are the best / most accessible languages for blind programmers?
[Just think logically!](https://xkcd.com/1112/)
john-radio··on Small business owners say they're pressured to hire off-duty cops for security
Unfortunately corrupt cops aren't limited to just one legal fig leaf for collecting payments, or even to operating inside the bounds of the law at all. Even this specific article discusses four or five different towns with varying flavors of this corruption problem; it focuses on Minneapolis probably just because that's where the newspaper is based out of, not because that's the only place where cops do a protection racket.
john-radio··on Louise Glück has died
Glück was my favorite poet. One of my favorites by her is called Gretel in Darkness: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1KIFfxBz0ROtrWbVxWPIeSKi9...
john-radio··on A New Satellite Outshines Some of the Brightest Stars in the Sky
This is horrible. Some shitty business should not be permitted to change the night sky.
john-radio··on Ask HN: How do I improve my answer to “Tell me about a project you worked on”
What are changeset comments? Like the git log?
john-radio··on Ben Fry resigns from the Processing Foundation
Naively, because it might help more pro-social and FOSS software get made?
john-radio··on Show HN: An app to create asynchronous micro podcasts
Hmm, that landing page and the screenshots within are unbelievably slick looking. I'll download it and give it a try.
john-radio··on Critics Furious Microsoft Is Training AI by Sucking Up Water During Drought
Yeah, the "oh well, it's evaporated already, so no getting it back without spending even more energy" tack of the post that you're responding to to is insane. That's not how water cooling works!
john-radio··on Does anybody remember Google People
If you think it looks so easy, I urge you to start writing it! It's one of my favorite genres of fiction and I think that effective horror can be harder to write than it might seem.
john-radio··on New York City declares state of emergency amid flash floods
I don't think that saying "it's crazy" is even specific enough to be called an exaggeration, nor is it untrue. It doesn't take that many force multipliers to make your experience during these floods absolutely wild and crazy painful. Try being homeless, incarcerated, mentally ill? I mean, I'm glad you're comfortable, but the city as a whole has really had a crazier than usual day.
john-radio··on Merlin's Wisdom Project
Wait, what Flintstones am I supposed to have watched? The Hana-Barbera cartoon was so good that it deserves to be the go-to example for things that young people "somehow haven't heard of"?
john-radio··on Google Podcasts to shut down in 2024
Give product team competent at maintaining podcast features ( o ´ ・ _ ・ ) っ
john-radio··on Investigation: 78% of carbon offset projects globally are “likely junk“
The article is just a thin wrapper of blogspam around an investigation by The Guardian: https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2023/sep/19/do-carbo... which I think is high quality.
john-radio··on How (not) to apply for a software job
I never know how granular to go with those.
john-radio··on The brain is not an onion with a tiny reptile inside (2020)
Yes

edit: I was trying to jokingly reply "Yes {smiling-imp-emoji}" when I realized I've never seen an emoji on Hacker News before - looks like they get automatically removed!

john-radio··on Google says it can’t fix Pixel Watches, please just buy a new one
Costing under $100 and needing to be charged no more than every two weeks is an absolute killer app[liance?] for me. I have enough random crap needing constant charging or awaiting expensive replacement. So that's why my watch is a Timex (in low-enough light conditions its Indiglo backlight doubles as a flashlight. A flashlight!!) and my ebook reader is an e-ink device rather than a phone or tablet.

Come to think of it, having an LED screen of any kind is a big red flag where one doesn't have to exist. It's as true for guitar pedals as it for wristwatches - just one more thing that can break and may as well brick your device when it breaks unless your repair game and supply chain is strong.

john-radio··on Show HN: Loopy – share and find and music you love
Does it actually require registration? You made this comment 29 minutes ago, and I'm listening to it without registering right now. (The "Sign up" button is front and center, but you can scroll past it and still see what's playing).
john-radio··on The English cottage where John le Carré wrote Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy
Sarcasm?
john-radio··on Advanced NLP with SpaCy
"Manually" anything just depends on the size of your dataset.
john-radio··on J.D. Salinger and wielding copyright as self-protection
Maybe some percent of them are just testing out the Cornish solidarity thing.
john-radio··on LensLeech: Touch a camera to control your devices
This is a blatant attempt at recruiting the obvious engineering talents of the OP to the cause of building guitar pedals and synthesizers, which I applaud.
john-radio··on The low, low cost of committing cybercrime
For crimes where the criminal's "happy path" result is to take somewhere from $50 to $50,000, you'd expect that the most important cost element would be risk of getting caught and punished, although I have the impression that enforcement is not actually that strict.
john-radio··on Social media decline: Users are shifting to messaging apps and group chats
Yeah, I used to call enshittification "Black and Deckering".
john-radio··on Griffin – A fully-regulated, API-driven bank, with Clojure
That particular detail is not dangerous in and of itself, but it is an embarrassing, public "code smell" because it indicates they are going cowboy mode and implementing weird ideas in their code even when it comes to authentication and cryptography.
