johanyc··on Pocket TTS: A high quality TTS that gives your CPU a voice
Yeah hackernews users kept thinking the average consumers like to tinker like we do lol
johanyc··on Our approach to advertising
> Plus, Pro, Business, and Enterprise subscriptions will not include ads
johanyc··on A4 Paper Stories
That would make the folded phone too wide though. More like a mini tablet.
johanyc··on A4 Paper Stories
> When I'm in Europe the A4 page looks too svelte.

Off-topic but as a non-native English speaker, TIL what svelte means lol. I often get exposure of new words first from a product name. Same happened with Chrome.

johanyc··on Polymarket refuses to pay bets that US would 'invade' Venezuela
They left so that doesn't count as an invasion?? They have already invaded when they enter Venezuela with military force.

> transitive. To enter in a hostile manner, or with armed force; to make an inroad or hostile incursion into.

johanyc··on Vietnam bans unskippable ads
Yeah. I'm happy to watch ads if I'm interested in the product. Sometimes i even want to rewind to see a part i missed but youtube doesnt let me. No idea why

johanyc··on AI Slop Report: The Global Rise of Low-Quality AI Videos
> AI Slop: Careless, low-quality content generated using automatic computer applications and distributed to farm views and subscriptions or sway political opinion.

They consider low quality video produced by automatic programs "AI slop" even when it's not AI. That's not a very accurate title.

johanyc··on How uv got so fast
> To me, unless it is egregious, I would be very sensitive to avoid false positives before saying something is LLM aided. If it is clearly just slop

Same. I'm actually more tired of this AI witch hunt

johanyc··on Show HN: Ez FFmpeg – Video editing in plain English
is this better than just ask any llm cli tool (warp, codex, gemini, claude code, etc.) to generate ffmpeg command for you?
johanyc··on Show HN: Learning a Language Using Only Words You Know
I use a similar idea to add LLM-generated example sentences to my anki cards. But I didn't restrict the words it can use. I just ask it to use A1-level words and gnerate ~5 sentences in increasing difficulty order and I manually pick the 2 most suitable ones. Quite often the words it uses have a large overlap with my vocabulary.
johanyc··on Backing up Spotify
https://www.csc.kth.se/~gkreitz/spotify/kreitz-spotify_kth11...

KTH link is better than scribd for downloading. though academic links are sometimes prone to link rot.

johanyc··on Yep, Passkeys Still Have Problems
How do you use your passkeys? Do you have them sync with your apple or google accounts?

I've only experienced using passkeys with 1password and it's smooth as butter. Assuming 1p is unlocked, To login: press login with passkey on website -> press sign in on 1p extension pop-up -> done To create account: click create passkey on the website -> click save on 1p extension pop-up -> done

Tbh i think it's more important to get people to use password managers than passkeys.

johanyc··on Coursera to combine with Udemy
Yeah. And the a lot of coursera courses offered by universities are dumbed down. I much prefer going to Youtube and watch open courses there.
johanyc··on I ported JustHTML from Python to JavaScript with Codex CLI and GPT-5.2 in hours
The power of blogging
johanyc··on MIT professor shot at his Massachusetts home dies
I lived around that area for 3 years. Never heard of any shooting in that neighborhood.
johanyc··on Are we stuck with the same Desktop UX forever? [video]

it doesn't look very easy to use in the demo tbh

johanyc··on Hashcards: A plain-text spaced repetition system

Both are supported already

johanyc··on New Kindle feature uses AI to answer questions about books
assistant.koplugin is pretty good. I've been using it for a while now.
johanyc··on How Google Maps allocates survival across London's restaurants
Woah I remember this. Totally forgot about the feature.
johanyc··on How I bypassed Amazon's Kindle web DRM
are you using a relatively new kindle?
johanyc··on How I bypassed Amazon's Kindle web DRM
> I've been "obtaining" ebooks for years. But this ONE time, I thought: "Let's support the author."

ugh. The right thing to do is buy and THEN download the no drm version from "other sources." You should always support the authors.

johanyc··on Pixnapping Attack
I don't get how this works after watching the video. is it still accessing the pixels from the authenticator app even after you switch to another app?
johanyc··on What GPT-OSS leaks about OpenAI's training data
Google Books is transformative. It's a decided case. And it's the same as Google Image, i.e. for search.

johanyc··on What GPT-OSS leaks about OpenAI's training data
> Google Books created a huge online index of books, OCRing, compressing them, and transforming them. That was copyright infringement.

No. It's a decided case. It's transformative and fair use. My understanding why it's transformative is that Google Books mainly offers a search interface for books and it also have measures to make sure only snippets of books are shown.

johanyc··on Jules, remote coding agent from Google Labs, announces API
Do people really find Jules useful? I find it needs babysitting much more than Cursor.
johanyc··on In Praise of RSS and Controlled Feeds of Information
> Don't subscribe to sites that make money the more they post.

That's an interesting tip. Never thought about it this way.
