johanvts··on Dutch governments builds alternative for Microsoft based on NixOS
Sure, I did my phd back in the 2010s and latex+git/svn was what everybody used. Im not saying you cant use word, im just saying the criticism raised of latex above is not a valid reason to.
johanvts··on Dutch governments builds alternative for Microsoft based on NixOS
Disagree. Hunspell and aspell have tex modes that understand well what needs to be checked and what doesn’t.

Comments can be added with ‘%’. Just make sure to have a linebreak at every sentence and it’s cleaner than anything. Services like overleaf also exist for collaboration.

You can use any versioning system you want. From git to dropbox, its plaintext.

I do agree that layout can be very time consuming, but it helps once you learn to not care about it till the absolute end of working on the content.

Even if you write your thesis in latex, all interaction with the administration, grant applications etc. still happens in word documents. Thank God/John MacFarlane for pandoc.

The way they mention the governor immediately made me think this is mainly to gain political capital.

I love it, makes the interior feel light and open and i never experienced it being super hot or baking my scalp, there is a coating on it making it very different from just a clear pane. Model 3, 195cm.

Or use Lumo from Proton. Are there any other privacy first companies offering LLMs?
johanvts··on Why are European countries moving their gold out of North America?
I bought that initially, but Trump is causing real harm. The abandonment of WHO and USAid programs, stepping out of the paris accords etc. etc.

But the real issue is that he has been elected twice, it is not some one-off freak accident, a lot of americans just care more about transphobia or pizzagate than climate change or geopolitics and thats why its now clear to the rest of the world that we can’t trust the US any more.

If person X didn’t contribute anything but a prompt, he probably wont be able to charge much.

johanvts··on How Europe is killing makers and micro-entrepreneurs
Wrt recycled plastic content its more like 6 years (2024-2030), so much like outlined for China.

Would also be more fitting as most of it is made in Poland.
johanvts··on Deutsche Bank becomes first foreign yuan clearing bank in Europe
Sure, but the fundamentals are moving in same direction, partly thanks to Trump. Electricity is getting cheaper and EVs have 90+ efficiency, gas is getting more expensive. You could also say that petrol is fundamentally way to cheap because so far it has been exempt from paying for all the damage it causes.
johanvts··on Shattered skeleton is first confirmed death from trebuchet
Please don't censor yourself. It should be possible for you to share a video of something without that meaning you support it. You probably live in a country that has free speech? Use it.

I would like to see a video of a trebuchet. Modern or not.

johanvts··on Shattered skeleton is first confirmed death from trebuchet
The Romans had onagers and ballista, both of which work via string tension. Then around 6AD it seems string traction (mangonels) where introduced from China and finally counterweight/gravity was introduced in the 12th century.
johanvts··on NP-overrated
I would to say I support that view. What is the purpose of modern science if not to discover truths you can apply universally? If you state: ‘this particular apple falls to the ground’ thats not a scientific discovery, there must be some general applicability.
johanvts··on Deutsche Bank becomes first foreign yuan clearing bank in Europe
Those numbers are from before Mr Trump decided to do his very best to convince the world to stop using oil. Which happened to coincide beautifully with VW group, Stellantis and Chinese firms having an all out price war on smaller EVs, which have until now been the underserved segment of the market. In Denmark it’s certainly not 36%, its probably closer to 90% of new cars being EVs, it’s simply financial suicide to buy a new ICE car here.

1 month doesn’t seem like enough time to copy something so fundamental as the screen geometry.
johanvts··on Half of Europe's towns and villages have fewer residents than 60 years ago
In my country part of the problem is taxation. Real estate gains are not taxed so we have instantiated a mini feudal system where the land owning class need not work, and many chase speculation over productive labor, and since this group is rather large this is exacerbating the demographic problems we already have with labor supply. Further it is driving a feeling of unfairness among the rural population that leads to political instability. Finally it is leaving some areas simple in lack of maintenance.

I dont disagree, but that's just how capitalism works. And it does solve a problem, there will be less airtravel.
johanvts··on JetZero
Just stop subsidizing flying, maybe even tax the fuel a fraction of the value it’s destroying and I bet most of flying will suddenly turn out to actually be completely avoidable.
johanvts··on Hacker wipes Romania's land registry database
In my country (and I think by now most non-US developed countries do something similar) everybody has a CPR(CentralPersonRegistry) number that identifies you, you need it to do almost everything so you aren't likely to forget (its your birthday + 4 digits). You get it at birth or if you come to the country for more than 3 months, it legally mandatory and it's also legally required to inform the government if you change your address. Also, if you (ever) had a modern passport there is already a database with your fingerprints, face and iris scan in it.
johanvts··on Reverse centaurs are the answer to the AI paradox (2025)
I have been fortunate enough to be in the centaur setting but I find my issue is simply that it’s often fools gold. The output is not correct, but in a way that looks correct, and I have to spend hours backtracking and hunting down the issue(es).
johanvts··on Every new car sold in the European Union must include a driver monitoring camera
Yes, in the EU. On the plus side speed limits generally are higher than in the US.
johanvts··on Every new car sold in the European Union must include a driver monitoring camera
The speeding chime is legally required to be reset to on after every trip. But I find the speed signs are very rarely missed (model 3 highland), also its a single press on the main screen to disable. My warnings are +99% genuine cases where i need to slow down and I bet that’s true for +99% of people who have these system.
johanvts··on l: A new runtime for k and q
APL is cool, but that quote hurts my brain. Disregard the funny typo, clearly different situations call for different strategies. For example, it might be great to use LLM slop interactively while learning, but that doesn’t mean it can be used as a finished product.
johanvts··on Performance per dollar is getting faster and cheaper

johanvts··on Ask HN: Will programmers write more efficient code during the memory shortage?
Only if people start buying computers with less memory, if they just buy fewer computers it doesn’t seem worhwhile.
