johanvts··on Europe Surpasses 900,000 Public EV Charge Points
In DK the ballpark savings is 25-50 US cents saved pr mile driven when public charging. But you can save even more at home or work. Unlimited public charging can also be had around 120USD a month. It’s around a half dollar for a public KwH and gas is around 9 usd/ gallon here.
johanvts··on Ozempic's biggest side effect: Turning Denmark into a 'pharmastate'?
With competitors it would drop to margin cost, but without competitors I guess it becomes a function of the income distribution? Assuming cost pr. unit is fixed, it’s better to sell 1 unit for 100$ than 2 units for 50$.
johanvts··on Small neural network enables realistic rendering of woven fabrics in real-time
I think more often it’s about translation. From image to classification ex. with no hope of mapping back.
johanvts··on Small neural network enables realistic rendering of woven fabrics in real-time
> works by encoding the patterns and parameters of fabrics as a small latent vector, which can later be interpreted by a decoder to produce realistic representations of various fabrics.

> Woven fabric patterns […] tend to be regular and repetitive. Chen and his colleagues set out to leverage their repetitive nature

Is this “just” using the NN to approximately compress and decompress things? That doesn’t seem to explain the performance gains, unless some work can be done in the reduced space?

johanvts··on Beyond the wall: Working with aperiodic tilings using finite-state transducers
The original hat tile paper came with a nice webdemo (https://github.com/isohedral/hatviz) for recursively builidng a tiling following the method in the paper. I have a version with a few additions (Truchet patterns) hosted if anyone wants to play around with it here: https://www.johansivertsen.com/customhatviz/app.html
johanvts··on Application of Locality Sensitive Hashing to audio fingerprinting
How is that not aligned with what I’m saying? You add some detail, but that doesn’t make me wrong.
johanvts··on Application of Locality Sensitive Hashing to audio fingerprinting
How well it works for identifying music is going to be an issue of how well you can construct the feature vector which is not covered. If you map every song in to the same small subset of space, LSH will struggle. Map them to well separated places and it will shine.
johanvts··on BYD Rolls Off Its 7Mth New Energy Vehicle
Sure, but according to google labour costs are less than 10% in current cars, probably even less in the future.
johanvts··on BYD Rolls Off Its 7Mth New Energy Vehicle
I still think the EU brands have a chance. The ID2 has lots of potential and the eC3 is a price leader being made in EU. The new scenic and the Renault 5 also seem much more appealing than the BYD cars.

We not just switch to evil mode or boon. Lets of ways to make emacs more ergonomic, no reason for apostasy.
johanvts··on Emacs-ng: A project to integrate Deno and WebRender into Emacs
Agreed, but I think the defaults aren’t that bad. It should not be an IDE or git UI out of the box IMO. What’s needed is better default completion and discoverability.
johanvts··on Flexoki, an inky color scheme for prose and code

johanvts··on UK Government Extends Petrol and Diesel Car Sales Until 2035
I think so yes. They make money on those chargers so I imagine they will keep putting them up as demand grows.
johanvts··on UK Government Extends Petrol and Diesel Car Sales Until 2035
You are a very rare customer. Most people take a break after driving for a few hours. Might as well charge the car. A fast charge speed that lets you drive a few hours on 30mins of charging and you don’t really need more battery capacity than that. Which is pretty much what new EVs already offer. It’s more likely that the cars will start getting lighter as the battery tech improves, a 600mile battery capacity really wouldn’t make a lot of sense for most customers.

Charge at the office, charge at the supermarket, wherever you go. I don’t drive much but having a 22kw AC charging car I can get charged for the week in 45 minutes of swimming. Having a charger at home is convenient, but not really necessary.

A bicycle does all the things an electric capsule could do and much more. You can add weather protection to a bicycle if you need. You can add electrification. No need to reinvent the wheel.
johanvts··on Invertible Bloom Lookup Tables with Less Randomness and Memory
w.r.t the paper when they say they need k-wise independent hash functions, this is a requirement on the family of hash functions used. It’s not the functions that are independent of each other, it’s the values from any particular function that are independent of each other. Just in case this wasn’t already clear.
