johanvts··on Magit Is Amazing
It shows you conflicting files. I normally resolve each via ediff or my IDE and then go back to magit. It’s not a diff/merge tool.
johanvts··on Magit Is Amazing
Im using magit on windows for years now. It used to be that larger operations would completely clog everything up. They can still be annoying, but it’s not the dealbreaker it used to be.
johanvts··on Nobel Peace Prize 2025: María Corina Machado
Relevant in this context: The translation introduces “nations” , but the original talks about peace between “people”.
johanvts··on OpenAI Is Just Another Boring, Desperate AI Startup
Is GPT-5 so bad? I often find it pretty impressive, if slow.
johanvts··on Babel is why I keep blogging with Emacs
Nice, so how do you trigger the client? I could see something like this working via autohotkey
johanvts··on Babel is why I keep blogging with Emacs
For hugo at least, you can write posts in org mode.
johanvts··on Babel is why I keep blogging with Emacs
Conforming to “the market” is just a pandoc call away. I export to markdown, pdf, html and even docx all the time when i need to share with colleagues. I prefer writing in org-mode because of the complete ecosystem it offers inside emacs. But also just as plaintext I really miss src blocks in markdown.
johanvts··on Windows 11 Update KB5063878 Causing SSD Failures
Did you try bazzite OS, the only issue I have had was to select the proton build of CS, everything else works out of the box. Except for games that need anti-cheat… So I still ended up with a windows partition.
johanvts··on Windows 11 Update KB5063878 Causing SSD Failures
Had to get windows to play anti-cheat games. The EU mandated N versions seem pretty bloat free to me.
johanvts··on I tried every todo app and ended up with a .txt file
Did you try org-mode?
johanvts··on The Country Where 76% of Cars Sold Are Electric
That was in January, 87,5% of private cars sold where electric in July: https://fdm.dk/nyheder/nyt-om-biler/2025-08-private-er-helt-...
johanvts··on Truchet Tiles
You can use the monotile! See my links below.
johanvts··on Truchet Tiles
Not exactly what you are requesting, but I added truchet patterns to a monotile renderer a while back. See here https://www.johansivertsen.com/post/monotile/ The drawing tool is here: https://www.johansivertsen.com/customhatviz/app.html Press 'build supertiles' a few times and enable the truchet overlay.
johanvts··on The Country Where 76% of Cars Sold Are Electric
I guess its mostly scooters? But Denmark, Sweden and Norway are also all above 80% and growing and here its mainly cars.
johanvts··on Supreme Court's ruling practically wipes out free speech for sex writing online
Im hosting my site on an IP in the US, just because it was the best hosting option. If the US laws change so that either a) I am liable or b) the hosting provider wont host me. Then of course I would have to move to another, non US, provider. And I wouldn’t be alone so the U.S internet would probably be a lot smaller than it is now.
johanvts··on Edamagit: Magit for VSCode
The shortcuts are kind of a big deal though. Im writing transient modes for everything I can. Its the perfect UI for git but also other productivity tasks. For example I wrapped our issue tracker (youtrack) in a transient mode and it has made it so much more enjoyable to use.
johanvts··on Lossless video compression using Bloom filters
You start out with the position of all the 1s (positions of changed pixels). A hashtable would be great for speeding up the query time, but does not compress anything. The bloom filter takes up much less space. The price is that you can get false positives.
johanvts··on Olympic Gold Medalist Dominates the 100M at Her Kid's Sports Day Event

johanvts··on The Halting Problem is a terrible example of NP-Harder
> NP-hard is the set all problems at least as hard as NP-complete

Im a bit confused by this. I thought NP-complete was the intersection of NP-hard and NP. Maybe this is stating the same?

johanvts··on Ask HN: Why is there no P2P streaming protocol like BitTorrent?
Octoshape developed this tech, I believe it was sold to some american tv networks.
johanvts··on $70M in 60 Seconds: How Insider Info Helped Someone 28x Their Money
Oppression and corruption is expensive. Systems based on them are not going to be competitive in the long run.
johanvts··on Foreign visits into the U.S. fell off a cliff in March
I guess immigrants where always worried about being detained, but german tourists previously where not.
johanvts··on Foreign visits into the U.S. fell off a cliff in March
A general sense that the US is actively trying to hurt us in the rest of the world. Enabling Putin, stopping USAID programs, imposing tariffs etc. the list is long by now. Just makes you not feel like supporting it by buying US or going there and spending money. Secondly lots of stories about tourists being detained by ICE make it feel even almost scary to go.
johanvts··on Foreign visits into the U.S. fell off a cliff in March
Trump thought of that so now he is also singlehandedly starting a global depression to ensure nobody will be traveling at all. Truly he has done more for the climate than Gretha.
johanvts··on An image of an archeologist adventurer who wears a hat and uses a bullwhip
For movies in particular the tail is very thin. Only very few 50 year old movies are ever watched. Was any commercial movie ever financed without a view to making a profit in the box office/initial release?
johanvts··on BYD has already produced its first solid-state cells
For cars I agree, but a significant energy density improvement would enable aviation and other fields to electrify.
johanvts··on OpenAI O3-Mini
Thats the role of ChatGPT?
johanvts··on gptel: a simple LLM client for Emacs
Yes, its called transient and it’s pretty simple to use for your own projects. I wrote a transient for my work tasks and now ex. Creating a new youtrack issue is effortless.
johanvts··on The C23 edition of Modern C
I payed for this on manning and they didn’t even release the final version yet. I guess I didn’t understand what I was buying, but I can’t help feel a bit cheated.
johanvts··on Canvas is a new way to write and code with ChatGPT
Nice, there is also gptel https://github.com/karthink/gptel
