johannkaupen··on Germans don’t do tech startups – more access to capital might change that
While I tend to agree, I am confused by the examples. If you are looking at GAFA, you are not looking at startups. Tech =! Startup

If you are looking at it that way, you have only one company in Germany which is SAP.

johannkaupen··on Berlin now home to soaring rents and rising tensions
For experienced engineers at a funded startup you can be way above €60-70k.
johannkaupen··on Ask HN: What was your best passive income in 2017?
Interesting answers. I expected Bitcoin owners to be a big part, 2017 was crazy.

Wondering if, a) there are not too many people owning bitcoin in the hn community. b) everybody is a HODLER. c) nobody counts this as passive income.

johannkaupen··on Sweden is close to becoming a cashless economy
Recently I was wondering how you would teach kids how to deal with money if there is no money you can see. There is a lot of research about the effects of seeing the money you spend and how this helps to assess how much you are actually spending. (No, your Spreadsheets don't help really.)

So if you don't learn this (to me one of the strongest and still most important) lesson as a kid, which effect will it have on your spending behavior in the long term?

johannkaupen··on Ellen Pao: My lawsuit failed. Others won’t
"1. Please post civilly and substantively, or not at all; 2. If you have a substantive point to make, make it thoughtfully; otherwise please don't comment until you do."

Dang, just above a few minutes earlier.

johannkaupen··on Voice Synthesis for in-the-Wild Speakers via a Phonological Loop
There are too many example to do fraud with this to list here.

One example: Not too long ago I still did the rather more important banking stuff with a quick phone call (couldn't be done entirely online).

johannkaupen··on Ask HN: Those in Europe making €100K+ annually, what is your job like?
You asked when Europe was mostly at sleep. At least most of the ones doing that much.

In Berlin this is a quite high salary. However, I do know a few people who are doing 100+

It's mostly CEO, COO, CTOs at startups after their B rounds. It's also good B2B Sales people. But I also know developers who make this much.

Side note: This is huge in Berlin and as some mentioned before you already covered health care etc.

johannkaupen··on Data points that Facebook uses to target ads
Experiencing this with Instagram now. I used Instagram to follow lots of different accounts but basically didn't like anything apart of places I want to go to based on pictures posted by NatGeo and the likes to have a list of that at one point. Now Instagram only shows me this stuff and I'd have to scroll very far to find posts by friends. Now I'm not using Instagram anymore.
johannkaupen··on Ask HN: What keeps you from exercising?
Re 2. I'm running for ages and once I got older so I had to care about that I started wearing briefs/boxers. This is a bad excuse, buy two 3-packs and you'll be fine.
johannkaupen··on How Sam Walton Optimised Conversions in 1960s
This is probably the opinion every manager working at a traditional retailer has. Well, the answer is same-day (or even faster) delivery, better curation and presentation, new technologies such as VR and obviously also service such as generous return policies. It is very unlikely that e-commerce takes away 100% of the market, but it's another questions how many percent you have to take away from traditional retailers to destroy at least most of them.
johannkaupen··on The Berlin Startup Salary Report
This is very likely not correct data. I don't know any sales agent working for this little money. Actually sales earns way more than most other position in Berlin.
johannkaupen··on Bing Says 25% of All Searches Are Voice Searches
I think that's the reason. Bing is not popular but gets used by a lot of IoT/personal assistant services and therefore the share should be higher than with Google.

Curious about Baidu though. With some languages it's much easier to speak them than using your keyboard, so people adopt this feature sooner.

Apart from that it would be interesting how search will increase if Messenger/Whatsapp would integrate that into their product. I feel like voice is used way more in messaging and some people only live in messengers anyway, so it could definitely help adoption.
