johanbrook··on Why software engineers don’t get jobs: Three horror stories
We offer candidates pay for any code they write for us in "real" projects we use to judge them on. Only fair and square.
johanbrook··on Apple Announces Full WebRTC Support in Safari 11
We at Lookback use WebRTC to do live streaming research sessions for desktop, iOS, and Android. Works pretty neat, even though you need a SFU (a rebroadcaster) to support heavier load than a few peers watching. So the style of doing P2P for video sort of gets lost anyway ..
johanbrook··on Living in Switzerland ruined me for America and its lousy work culture (2016)
The U.S. is very behind many European countries in the work-life balance department. It's kinda surprising that America – with its liberal policies for private companies – is so backwards when it comes to caring about their employees.

The points in the article could apply to policies/norms in Sweden as well. Here, we get at least 4 weeks of paid vacation per year, as well as some insurances and a very generous parental leave (1 year for each parent).

johanbrook··on Cards Against Humanity is digging a hole in the earth
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cards_Against_Humanity

It's a card game where a group of people piece together sentences with cards with phrases and words. One of the funniest "party games" I've played.

johanbrook··on Welcome Aaron, Gustaf, Lyle, Immad and Marcus
Congrats, Gustaf!
johanbrook··on Music for Programming
I made a Spotify playlist with songs I like coding to a while back: https://open.spotify.com/user/johanbrook/playlist/2mtlhuFVOF.... Seemed to have gained some traction.
johanbrook··on Good Design
The idea of that "good design" is something you "just recognize" is somewhat related to the ideas in the book "Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance", but replaced with "Quality". Really good read.
johanbrook··on Getting started with Meteor and React
The official Meteor tutorial on React is pretty neat too: https://www.meteor.com/tutorials/react/creating-an-app
johanbrook··on Emoji on the command line
You can, but I think regular Unicode emojis are more portable, since most systems and browsers support them these days. No need for :fallbacks:.
johanbrook··on UI Design Dos and Don'ts
Most design sessions during WWDC last week was pretty much "Apple-stating-the-obvious-for-40-minutes". I don't know what the target audience was.
johanbrook··on How is Javascript used within the Spotify desktop application?
He's still there, and is doing low level stuff and hacks in Gothenburg. I heard he wrote much of the initial, highly optimized code for Spotify Connect.

I don't think the move from the C/C++ client was something he liked, tbh :)

johanbrook··on Inventing Favicon.ico
Not entirely web related, but Andy Hertzfeld has collected lots of early Apple stories on http://www.folklore.org/. Really delightful as well.
johanbrook··on How Google Builds Its Maps
Of all Google's products, Maps is the one I appreciate the most. It got lots of smart features, it's fast, it's got great coverage, and it's easy to use. Truly great work.
johanbrook··on Typicons - free-to-use vector icons embedded in a webfont kit
Ironic that the site creator has deactivated zooming on iOS devices, so the font icons' vector capability is in vain.
johanbrook··on Introducing Syte, An open sourced personal site that has social integrations
Another site with responsive design and doesn't fix the sidebar with "position: fixed" in narrow viewports. Filed issue here: https://github.com/rigoneri/syte/issues/7
johanbrook··on JQuery++
No touch support for the drag events? Weird, since swipe is working well on touch devices .. Would be nice to be able to have jQuery++ for both CSS3 animations and touch support instead of two separate plugins.
johanbrook··on Europe's Square
Also, check out the newly announced Swish (https://www.getswish.com, site in Swedish), which offers the same functionality, but with cooperation with several major banks. It seems to bypass swiping credit cards completely, by communicating wirelessly with cell phone numbers.
johanbrook··on Turn.js - The page flip effect for HTML5
Also check out Boardflip. A Flipboard style interaction implemented in JS (experimental).

johanbrook··on Poll: What mobile HTML5 framework do you use?
I've been turned off of all these mobile frameworks. Tried many, but no one has "felt right". Some got completely different design patterns (Sencha Touch), some are almost dead (jQTouch), some are large, ugly and bloated (jQuery Mobile), use non-standard stuff (Jo framework), etc. Sencha is really close to emulating a native feel, if that's what you're looking for, and jQTouch is really easy to get started with. Pros and cons.

HP's Enyo framework seems really interesting though, as does Mulberry. But sometimes the best framework is no framework at all - Backbone + Zepto can take you a long way (but lacks fancy mobile UI widgets). It all depends on the project.

johanbrook··on Show HN: Hackerhub.org
Sounds great! While checking the project out, I was thinking that it would be awesome if it was possible for me to do some design adjustments myself.
johanbrook··on Google Gravity
Works great on touch devices as well.
johanbrook··on Columnal: a fluid CSS grid, that scales from widescreen laptops down to phones
Since it often gives me the great level of control I want. As I stated, CSS frameworks often works the same way, and I've yet to find one that is good enough to convince me to spend time using it. "Hell is other people's HTML and CSS", you know.
johanbrook··on Columnal: a fluid CSS grid, that scales from widescreen laptops down to phones
Hooray, another responsive CSS grid framework. Not being negative, but most of them are very similar, and I often prefer rolling my own depending on the site's content and needs.

It's however very interesting to study these frameworks' underlying code to see how they solve things.
