jofo25··on Apple May Use a First Amendment Defense in That FBI Case. And It Just Might Work
If code is speech, does this mean anyone can write code to perform any kind of task (nefarious or otherwise) and be protected by the First Amendment? It seems difficult to parse that someone could write some code that for example, to break someone's pacemaker or life support machine and that person would be protected by free speech.

Maybe in that scenario, it would be the author who writes that code who would be protected but the person who executes the deadly code who is breaking the law?

jofo25··on Facebook was down
Except if you're working on Facebook iOS integration. Dammit Facebook! What are the odds.
jofo25··on Creatures – A simple evolution simulator
Let me tell you a story about Skynet...
jofo25··on The Disappearing Universe
I seem to remember from physics class that mass cannot travel faster than the speed of light, so how is it possible for galaxies to be unreachable if you managed to travel at the speed of light?
jofo25··on When Excite nearly bought Google
The UK still has a good selection of sharp, merciless interviewers. My favourite is Jeremy Paxman, he's quite a polarising personality but cuts through bs like paper.
jofo25··on Google's XSS game
In the text input I put:

jofo25··on GitHub experiencing a large DDoS attack
Maybe they want to disrupt developers working for a big bad company.
jofo25··on Google is sending out blankets to open-source developers
My first impression was that this was some joke and that Google think open source developers are poor and need help keeping warm at night.
jofo25··on Google Outage
Good name for Google's complaints system.
jofo25··on Fancy Input - CSS3 text typing effects for input fields
I like this! It has potential to be used in really nice ways. Once the kinks have been worked out, I would definitely consider using this.
jofo25··on Show HN: Our weekend project – Daily doses of inspiration
Sorry for my joke. It's a great site.
jofo25··on Show HN: Our weekend project – Daily doses of inspiration
Despite the poignant quote, seeing Abraham Lincoln's face slowly coming towards me was uncomfortable.
jofo25··on NYC Startup Funeral on Friday (2/8)
Great idea. A brilliant opportunity to learn from the mistakes of your peers and to help out others with your war stories.
jofo25··on For 40 Years, This Russian Family Was Cut Off From All Human Contact
It would be cool to isolate yourself just to return and be blown away by all the technological advancements made. Probably not worth it overall though.
jofo25··on UX Design for Startups
Rereading this, I come of as not grateful. Thanks for this it looks great!
jofo25··on UX Design for Startups
After you submit your email, the big white sign-up box led me to believe you had to sign up to actually get the book. Only after had I signed up did I notice the little paragraph saying the email had been sent.

Personally, "EBOOK WAS SENT TO YOUR E-MAIL" should be much bigger compared to sign up. I understand you want people to sign up but concerning UX, its not pleasant.

jofo25··on Finding Ideas For Your Next Project
There's an idea, scalable cloud service for blogs posted on HN :)
jofo25··on Valve And Xi3 Team For ‘Piston’ Steam Box
I always wondered why there was this heterogeneity between consoles and PCs. You're playing the same games, why would it be good for anyone to have to develop/buy something twice or for one exclusively.

Hopefully the Steam Box destroys this distinction and makes a more consistent and flexible gaming landscape.

jofo25··on [dead]
It may be my browser, but they look pretty naff.
jofo25··on Show HN: box2d-jquery - physics-engine for your DOM
Given identical initial conditions on every reload, I would expect the same thing to happen every time.
jofo25··on Leaping Brain's "Virtually Uncrackable" DRM is just an XOR with "RANDOM_STRING"
As another UK resident, I hear it used sarcastically frequently.
jofo25··on John McAfee: The Government Wants to Kill Me
>The media has portrayed me as paranoid

>I planted tiny POV video cameras and sound recorders on myself, some of my dogs, all around my property, in my cars, on my boats, at the Studio 54 bar in Orange Walk, on trees, in bushes, – everywhere I could...

Is it only me who thinks he's a teeny-tiny bit paranoid?

jofo25··on Think smaller
I agree. I've got a little personal mantra of my own that goes "Don't worry about the big problems, they're just lots of little problems to be done later"
jofo25··on Photos of Cabins
I feel living in the UK there is a real limit to these in-the-middle-of-nowhere places where you can set up shop miles and miles away from anyone else.

Places like the US and Canada have some amazingly beautiful remote spots that would be amazing to have a little cabin in.

jofo25··on Txtbirds
I liked this little trick for going over and over an array:

this.flaps = [ '------', '/‾\\/‾\\', '‾‾\\/‾‾' ]; ... this.el.innerHTML = this.flaps[this.flap_i++ % this.flaps.length];

jofo25··on Microsoft patents spying on you with your TV's camera
Maybe unplug your Kinect?
jofo25··on Obama's Secret Weapon In The South is 129 Million Years Old
I think its quite cool. I had no idea this blue band in the south existed. The history behind the fertile land and slavery migration I found particularly interesting.

It does make an unwritten assumption that more black people = more democrat votes. But I guess that is probably a fair assumption to make.

jofo25··on Kim Dotcom now plans to give New Zealand free broadband pipe to US
I would not give that man $400 million.
jofo25··on Apple posts its UK apology to Samsung
I thought they were required to in some way make the apology visible on their home page?
jofo25··on The rise of passive-aggressive wi-fi names
I seem to only hear it in "STOP BEING SO PASSIVE AGGRESSIVE ARGHHHH" sentences.
