joezydeco··on Real-time feedback: My closing move in every interview
This seems like a really dangerous way to expose yourself to a discrimination suit if you slip up in your feedback, or the candidate interprets it the wrong way. And they will.

Would HR advise you to give this kind of feedback to someone you're terminating? Normally you say zero for this exact reason.

joezydeco··on George Lucas Returns to Earth, Bearing Gifts
It was an impasse. Chicago wants the development money and tourism, but it also holds pretty strongly to the idea that the lakefront belongs to everyone and shouldn't be developed with private money and closed off. Yes, it was a parking lot. But it was a public parking lot.

That means sometimes these kinds of developments don't happen and you can argue either way. Lucas got a little pushy about how he wanted the museum to be developed and also turned down alternate sites. So he took his ball and left and that's okay too.

The first 40 floors of the WTC towers had steel beams coated in an asbestos insulating material. The regulations changed mid-construction but the lower floors remained.

About 400 tons of asbestos was thrown into the atmosphere around Manhattan when the towers fell.

Funny thing, this person is also our SAFe scrum master. So double the laziness in one package.
joezydeco··on Bending Spoons buying Miro for $1.355B
My best experience was a large meeting I had recently, in a well equipped conference room with actual whiteboards and stacks of post-it notes and the Power Miro User in the room insisted we all bring laptops and work on the boards online. Jesus Christ.

I do admire the fact that someone with a sense of humor at ICOS named the molecule TADA-lafil.
joezydeco··on Online clinics and influencers are promoting Cialis as a longevity drug
I invested heavily in ICOS when they launched, they had Bill Gates money and were looking for ways to extend lifespans and solve inflammation.

And all we got was another boner pill.

joezydeco··on This Hi-Fi Tape Recorder Changed Radio Forever
Sent to Germany at the war’s end, Mullin eventually came across that technology at a radio station...

Fun trivia: that radio station was in Bad Nauheim, Germany, which is where Elvis Presley was stationed during his stint in the US Army.

joezydeco··on U of Michigan drops first-semester grades to ‘curb mental health crisis’
And we shouldn't expect adult/parent level of work out a 16/17 year-old. There's no time left any more to be a kid.
joezydeco··on U of Michigan drops first-semester grades to ‘curb mental health crisis’
Let me tell you about the scam of 'honors' classes in today's high schools. They not doing anything more introspective or challenging. It's the same classwork thrown at them faster and without as much teaching support. Just more to grind out. But when you don't understand something?

You're smart, you'll figure it out.

In return you get inflated GPAs that get you into better colleges. But if you can't figure it out on the first try? More stress.

Interestingly, a lot of colleges now ignore the 'honors' weighted GPA and ask to see the unweighted score. If you have a teen entering high school, skip the honors track and help them do better in the normal track version of the class. See if your school offers dual-credit with a local community college or state university. Those transfer credits are WAY more valuable now (and cheaper!) than an AP score, with a lot less test stress.

joezydeco··on U of Michigan drops first-semester grades to ‘curb mental health crisis’
When you force high school kids to work days that are significantly longer than a normal adult to achieve a good GPA and get into a good college, you can expect that they are going to throttle back once they're away from home with way more free time than is normal.

From my kid's experience: she was up at 6:30am, in AP classes by 7:30am (three more to go during the day). Classes were done by 3:00, then sports practice until 5:00. Gotta have that activity on your college application, not counting other volunteering and clubs in the open spaces. Then homework after dinner until 10:00 or so, sometimes much later. Homework assigned over weekends. Homework assigned over breaks.

That's 15+ hours a day, every weekday, for an entire school year. Then you have test prep (APs and the ACT/SAT), college applications, writing essays and scholarship applications, college tours, sorting decisions, financial aid applications, etc etc etc. And now her college already has a few hours of orientation videos stacked up for her to watch before she moves in.

Personally, I don't blame her if she checks out for a few weeks. Or a semester.

joezydeco··on Tesla Driver Tries 'I Wasn't Driving' Excuse to Get Out of Speeding Ticket
You can be given a DUI even if you are sitting in the driver's seat with the engine turned off. Sitting in that seat means you are still in control of the car as far as the law sees it.
joezydeco··on When Feature Flags Do and Don't Make Sense (2019)
"At Google, our philosophy is that “rollbacks are normal.” When an error is found or reasonably suspected in a new release, the releasing team rolls back first and investigates the problem second"

Well this all makes sense now. My enterprise laid off most of our QA team and I see a constant stream of rollback announcements. Who needs regression testing anymore?
