joeraut··on Every classic Half-Life game is now free on Steam
It's quite easy to get System Preferences to ignore the update [0]. Ignoring Catalina isn't a long-term solution, but is pretty much a necessity for many right now.

joeraut··on Thank HN: You helped me get a new job
Thanks for sharing this, I'm glad that things have worked out well for you here. All the best for the future!
joeraut··on How to Exit Vim
One of my Computer Science lecturers had a rule: use Vim for all development for his class whilst on campus, and if caught using any other editor/IDE – or committing any artifacts showing evidence of such – we would lose several percentage points from our final mark for his class.

Harsh? Perhaps. But I can’t thank that lecturer enough for that rule. He converted a mostly IDE-wielding class into one that actually appreciated Vim, and most of us still use it or its key bindings.

Edit: this was in 2018, when VS Code, etc. were already popular.

joeraut··on Wyze leaks personal data for 2.4M security camera users
Wyze responded with a forum post discussing the leak: https://forums.wyzecam.com/t/updated-12-29-19-data-leak-12-2...
joeraut··on No, that dot in the domain name of the URL is not a mistake (2004)
HTTPS everywhere has other advantages, such as preventing ISPs from injecting scripts or content into HTTP pages. [0]

joeraut··on WiFi deauthentication attacks and home security
From the perspective of a relatively new HNer, this sort of comment further reinforces how great the community can be, in a meta-sort of way!
joeraut··on WiFi deauthentication attacks and home security
This is fascinating that some manufacturers may have gone down this Darwinian path in "improving" their products.

Is there any such law against this or any efforts in introducing such laws, either in Norway or elsewhere?

joeraut··on WiFi deauthentication attacks and home security
Why are people actually doing this on a wide scale?
joeraut··on Google Brass Set 2023 as Deadline to Beat Amazon, Microsoft in Cloud
It's 100,000,000 represented in scientific notation. In this context, a $100M company.

1E8 = 1 * 10^8 = 100,000,000 (xEy = x * 10^y).

joeraut··on WebAssembly becomes a W3C Recommendation
This looks awesome, great project!

Which specific CPUs or applications that you emulate really take advantage of the performance boost that WASM provides?

joeraut··on WebAssembly becomes a W3C Recommendation
There are some very cool demos, such as running Doom 3 in the browser [0], but as for actual good success stories, I'd be willing to bet that many teams just haven't seriously considered it for large or involved projects due to it not yet being fully supported everywhere, not an official W3C recommendation (at the time), etc.

joeraut··on Show HN: Dot-to-ASCII – Graphviz to ASCII Converter
This is pretty cool! I probably would have never discovered graph-easy if it weren't for this.

One thing though, it doesn't handle errors that nicely, e.g. for input "a" it outputs "null". Nitpicking aside, it's neat.

Edit: I wonder what sort of heuristics graph-easy is using behind the scenes to decide where to place the clusters, etc., and how it can tell whether a particular input is feasible or not.

joeraut··on Koalas ‘Functionally Extinct’ After Australia Fires Destroy 80% of Their Habitat
This is really sad to hear. I hope that we're capable of restoring their habitat to a reasonable extent, and that the natural population subsequently rises up again.
joeraut··on TikTok: Cheerfulness and censorship
Instagram is already working on this, with their new video editing tool Reels [1].

It'll be very interesting to see if these other big players can catch up though, given TikTok's massive numbers.

joeraut··on TikTok: Cheerfulness and censorship
I'm surprised that they moderate every video with over 50-150 views, that seems quite unique in this market. This is probably largely a good thing though given the target market of kids/teenagers.

It's already very interesting seeing how this is playing out.

joeraut··on Tesla PowerWall 2 Hack
I'm amazed Tesla went ahead and used easily guessable and unchangeable passwords. It's just such a trivial and obvious issue that it seems strange Tesla engineers let this happen.

I wonder if this was an off-the-shelf solution they're using here, or was developed by external contractors, for lack of a better explanation.

joeraut··on Ask HN: What printer do you recommend for rare printing?
Whilst there's not really much more left to add to the laser printer argument, in my own experience the absolute peace of mind a laser printer brings in knowing your report/flight ticket/etc. will print without issue is well worth the greater initial cost.
joeraut··on Ex-FDA Advisor Says of Lasik Eye Surgery: ‘It Should Have Never Been Approved’
I'm in the same situation as you. Worn glasses/contact lenses from a young age.

A 1% chance of life-changing complications with something as critical as vision is, honestly, a shockingly high number for something I had assumed was far more safe.

joeraut··on The 16-Inch MacBook Pro
Not sure whether to be relieved or concerned that this MBP isn't part of their extended keyboard repair program, but I'm leaning towards the former.
