joemi··on White House Considers Vetting A.I. Models Before They Are Released
All they have to do is say "national security" again and then they're in the clear (in their minds, at least).
joemi··on Ti-84 Evo
I used to keep my old TI-82 (or was it -84?) from high school and a simpler sturdy solar-powered calculator near my desk, but I realized I always just used either my computer (IRB in the terminal usually) or Apple's calculator app on my phone and never ever touched my physical calculators. So they've now been put in storage.
joemi··on Claude Code refuses requests or charges extra if your commits mention "OpenClaw"
I think the other way to think of it is: You're still free to do whatever you want with a the repo. The restriction is happening on the LLM's end, so ultimately it's the LLM's fault, so use a LLM without the restriction you want to avoid.

Are contributor guidelines that must be followed also no different from DRM in your view? Plenty of projects have those.
joemi··on Edit store price tags using Flipper Zero
I'm not quite sure I follow your question. Are you asking how do I know that someone who loses their job needed their job to afford groceries? If so, I guess I felt it was a safe assumption that the people working at grocery stores are not financially independent.
joemi··on Edit store price tags using Flipper Zero
Who do you think feels the effect of fraud/theft at retail stores? The "rich" owners feel a little of it, sure, but they have a proven strategy for keeping their profits up by reducing costs: fire employees and make those who remain do more work for the same pay. So you think this is "not actually a bad thing" because you're screwing over <insert big company here> but really you're just screwing over the workers.
joemi··on John Ternus to become Apple CEO
It's odd to see this comment, since I've always had the opposite experience (at least when comparing Windows and MacOS -- I haven't used desktop linux much in the past 20 years). On MacOS, when I click something, something happens, or at the very least starts to happen (and I get some visual indication). While in Windows I often click on something and get no indication that something happened or started happening, so I click again, and then suddenly perform the action twice. This most often happens when opening programs, but it happens in other places too sometimes.
joemi··on Introduction to Obsidian
You don't have to use _all_ the features. I don't.
joemi··on Introduction to Obsidian
I think separate vaults being in different window is probably intentional behavior to clearly show that they're separate vaults, not something that needs to be fixed.

If you want to sync only some of the things from a single vault and not other things, can't you just use different top-level folders? Have a "to-sync" folder and a "do-not-sync" folder, and only sync the to-sync one. I'm not sure if that's possible using Obsidian's paid sync, but it should be possible with other sync options.

joemi··on How Pizza Tycoon simulated traffic on a 25 MHz CPU
It's been mentioned a few other places in the comments here, but I recommend PICO-8 for beginning game developers. It's a really well-designed fantasy console, so it feels like you're actually developing for specific hardware due to the limits. But you're programming in Lua with an easy-to-use API, and you can make the entire game using PICO-8, since it has a code editor, sprite editor, map editor, sound fx editor, and music editor. It's a really nice experience -- I think this is the primary reason people love it and you hear so much about it.

If you want a less-restrictive game dev system or can't afford the (well worth it!) $15 for Pico-8, there are many great free methods, like LÖVE (also uses Lua), Godot (GDScript or C#), Phaser (js), and so on.

joemi··on Unfolder for Mac – A 3D model unfolding tool for creating papercraft
The same could be said about pretty much _any_ software.
joemi··on Lunar Flyby
I started rewatching For All Mankind a week or so before the Artemis II launch, so it's been pretty wild to watch an alt-history about people going to and settling on the Moon and Mars, and then to see real life people just starting to return to the Moon at the same time.
joemi··on Book review: There Is No Antimemetics Division
I had the same issue. I figured it out before I'd have commented similarly, but I completely understand where the confusion came from and I don't attribute it to your reading skills.

joemi··on Amazon is adding a fuel surcharge to fees it collects from third-party sellers
That's still far more reliable than trying to email someone who doesn't have a computer or smartphone.
joemi··on Amazon is adding a fuel surcharge to fees it collects from third-party sellers
It may or may not be anyone of scale (I haven't been keeping track of the seller names), but there sure are a LOT of sellers who do that. Practically every search result I've looked for on Amazon in the past few years is flooded with people reselling Chinese brand goods or Chinese no-name brand goods. Even when I search for a specific US -brand product, the results are filled with similar (or similar-ish) Chinese goods that are all selling the same few product variations.

Glad to hear that's not you, though. Amazon definitely doesn't need any more people reselling like that. And good luck! I used to sell used books on Amazon (both seller-fulfilled and FBA) when I worked at a book store and year after year it became more and more of a nightmare until it simply wasn't worth our time anymore.

That's really awesome! One feature request though: Can you make it so mousing over (or clicking on) an acronym tells you what it means? There are so many acronyms, it's hard for a layperson like myself to understand much of it.
joemi··on Make macOS consistently bad unironically
When I'm using my macbook's screen, I usually expand a browser window to fill the whole screen -- it's a 13" screen so not using the whole thing makes things feel small. But most of the time my computer is plugged into an larger external monitor (20-something inches, maybe 27?), and there I don't expand any windows to fill the whole screen. I like having separate not-full-screen windows which partially (or mostly) overlap.

Somewhat relatedly, we use Windows at work, and it drives me crazy when I hop on a computer after someone's been using it and they have every single thing maximized, even Windows Explorer, on 27" monitors. A maximized browser, I get... I don't do it myself but I understand how it can be useful, but maximizing Windows Explorer is just insane to me, and yet a lot of my coworkers do it.

joemi··on Nanobrew: The fastest macOS package manager compatible with brew
Is Ruby really the speed bottleneck in Homebrew? I would assume it would be due to file operations (and download operations), not choice of programming language.
joemi··on Talking Liquid Glass with Apple
I wish we had metrics for claims like this. I feel like it's been a very common thing to see in blog posts written by humans, not AIs, over the last two decades.
joemi··on Talking Liquid Glass with Apple
Parentheses in headings is a telltale AI sign now? I feel like this has been a common way for normal humans to write for ages.
joemi··on Talking Liquid Glass with Apple
"Permanent" as used in the article was merely in contrast to the concept of "going to get rolled back soon", not a true declaration of forever.
joemi··on Talking Liquid Glass with Apple
Maybe I'm getting worse at recognizing it, but I didn't notice anything that made me think it was AI-authored. What were the telltale signs you noticed?
joemi··on Delve – Fake Compliance as a Service
It can be inferred the use of "we" was as a quote. The bigger issue is that they did not clearly indicate that they were quoting.
joemi··on An update on Steam / GOG changes for OpenTTD
Isn't it already like that, more or less, but the length of time it takes is longer than any software has so far existed?

> I feel like people really need to learn basic physics.

I'm 20+ years out of college and I asked a question specifically because I was unsure. Give me a break. I'm sorry if "party balloon buoyancy physics" wasn't the part of my college classes that stuck with me.

joemi··on AirPods Max 2
You're too high by a power of 10.
joemi··on AirPods Max 2
I think you'd find quite a difference between 386,2 g and 3862 g, especially when wearing it on your head.
joemi··on Hammerspoon
Ah. Given the context, I had assumed it relied more on hammerspoon and less on applescript. I'm a bit less excited about it than I was, but I'll still look into doing similar sometime since I'm a habitual tab-opener.
joemi··on Your phone is an entire computer
Perhaps we're making different assumptions, but a process that "is not beyond what a person of average intelligence and modest computer skills could pull off with some patience and a video guide" sounds quite a bit more complex than a mere Unlock option in iPhone settings. Also, the results are different too. The process you've described results in an Android desktop, whereas the proposed iphone unlock process would result in a full macOS desktop, which sounds (to me at least) much more desirable to have.

I stand by my speculation that if it were possible to do that on an iphone, it'd definitely be something loads of people would do, including a large amount of people who shouldn't open their device that way but do just because they watched someone on social media telling them to.
