joemaller1··on The drab stupidity of Soylent
There's no fructose in white rice and fructose has virtually no GI (GI being a measure of glucose). Table sugar may have the same glucose load as white rice, but by weight it contains an equal amount of fructose thats headed straight to the liver.
joemaller1··on Reasons Why WordPress Made PHP Popular, not PHP Frameworks
So we're wrong to wish for WordPress to adopt PSR standards instead of their own idiosyncratic coding style?

I really like PSR compliant PHP code (it's almost PEP 8-ish), the WordPress standards are frustratingly opposite on some key concepts (braces, indentation). But WP is so popular, I don't see how this might ever be resolved.

joemaller1··on Soylent reaches $1M in pre-orders
tastes like cancer.
joemaller1··on Why Your Dog Can Get Vaccinated Against Lyme Disease And You Can’t
Chickens love to eat ticks.
joemaller1··on How upgrading to Google Apps for Business killed my company's email for 6 hours
Different issue with Google Apps: We work with some big pharma companies. During the free evaluation, Google flagged two of our partners and one of our project managers as spammers and silently suspended their accounts. We hosted our email somewhere else.
joemaller1··on GitHub Is Down - Storage Availability: Experiencing Problems
Down might be too strong a word, but GitHub is definitely dodgy this morning.
joemaller1··on Automating Development Environments with Vagrant and Puppet
If you're just getting started with Vagrant and find yourself stuck, try a different provisioner. I had a lot of trouble wrapping my head around Puppet, but was up and running with Ansible very quickly. Puppet, Chef and Ansible can all be used to build out your Vagrant VM's environment.
joemaller1··on Packer is a tool for creating identical machine images for multiple platforms
This is seriously ambitious! Glad to see it, a tool for cloning existing boxes was the first thing I went looking for when I started using Vagrant.
joemaller1··on You're the only one seeing this page
tl;dr... multiplication
joemaller1··on Salt: Like Puppet, Except It Doesn’t Suck
PuPHPet works very well for getting basic Vagrant boxes up and running. Thank you.
joemaller1··on The Linux kernel trumps the moonshot by a few orders of magnitude
I'm trying to come up with a pithy response, but I'm kind of speechless. Sure Linux is a triumph, but... Seriously? Is the author trolling?
joemaller1··on A solution for designers who don't know Wordpress
Bones is a similar project based on HTML5 Boilerplate, source is on GitHub: https://github.com/eddiemachado/bones
joemaller1··on A solution for designers who don't know Wordpress
I was hoping the solution would include something other than WordPress.
joemaller1··on Ask HN: How long did it take you to become a proficient programmer?
Let me get back to you about that.
joemaller1··on Adobe abandons its Creative Suite to focus on Creative Cloud
Adobe's biggest mistake is pricing.

The cost of Creative Suite bundled in losses from piracy. A Creative Cloud subscription costs pretty much exactly what Creative Suite does--without having to compensate for losses to piracy.

Adobe should have provided incentive to switch by dropping the price. If they can truly eliminate piracy then their profits wouldn't be hurt by dropping the price substantially. Doing so would also generate a lot of good will among users.

Keeping prices high with no other option will just encourage new forms of piracy that much sooner. Until now, pirates could just ignore Creative Cloud. No more. I expect we'll see cracked activation proxies within a few months.

joemaller1··on Chinese “spy” caught with NASA laptop full of porn, not secrets
"Damnit, he's not guilty of anything. Can we humiliate him or something to save face?"

So proud.

joemaller1··on Florida Teen Charged With Felony After Science Experiment Goes Bad
Obviously, the solution is to ban science.
joemaller1··on Keep Google fonts updated on your desktop
I put this up a while back (and need to update it): http://joemaller.com/1856/download-google-fonts/

Google changed repository layout so there are a lot more subfolders to sort through but `hg clone https://code.google.com/p/googlefontdirectory/` still works fine.

(edit: just saw @shadowmint's update, agreed about https://github.com/w0ng/googlefontdirectory being better in every way.)

joemaller1··on Ghost: Just a Blogging Platform
I'm looking for something like this, but there is no this here. "Try it" should go to Github, not Kickstarter.
joemaller1··on 'Flat design'-inspired Google Maps using the API
There's a lot you can do:

joemaller1··on Updated Packages – Python 3.3
Let's hope so, there's got to be a tipping point.
joemaller1··on Making a Physical Product
This was front page all day, I'm surprised he has any left to sell.
joemaller1··on State of RSS Readers
Yahoo Pipes is awesome, but I'm consistently amazed it hasn't been shut down. Because it's so awesome.
joemaller1··on “Paleofantasy”: Stone Age delusions
Lactase persistence is simply a gene we're born with failing to turn off. Hardly a radical evolutionary change. Animals which eat plant or grain-based diets have completely different digestive systems than humans.
joemaller1··on What Does 200 Calories Look Like?
Fat composition is affected by the diet of the cow. Grain fed dairy cows yield milk that's lacking in Vitamin K2. K2 is essential for regulating delivery of calcium in the body. Free calcium without K2 contributes to atherosclerosis (and other mis-placed calcium issues) without necessarily contributing to bone and dental health.

Also, most of the vitamins in milk are in the fat, which people usually remove.
