joelkesler··on Turning Sublime Text into a Lightweight Python IDE
I do myself. It is good to see that it is still being developed, but I wish the dev would do a paid update with new features so I would worry less about it's future.
joelkesler··on Nullsoft: The death of the last maverick tech company (2004)
I would suggest checking out Swinsian http://swinsian.com and Audirvana https://audirvana.com for alternative mac audio players.
joelkesler··on Firefox Focus – a free, fast and easy to use private browser for iOS
I disagree. That is only one potential issue (grabbing passwords and info from the web view) and the threat is coming from the app it self, not the content loaded.

A big issue comes from potential 3rd party browsers not being hardened to browser exploits which could circumvent device security. It may not be able to break out of the browser's security sandbox but if the browser has access to your camera, photos, contacts, etc...

joelkesler··on What every coder should know about gamma
The resizing algorithm set in the photoshop preferences (bicubic, etc) is applied when resizing smart objects. I have found that if I am unhappy with how one algorithm looks, I switch to another, free transform the smart object (but make no sizing adjustment) and hit enter. The object will be rerendered with the newly selected algorithm.
joelkesler··on The Second Life of One Photographer’s Ad Images
Those photos were wonderful and well crafter. For a modern photographer who adds a creative twist to still life advertising photography, I recommend looking through Natasha V's work: http://www.natashav.com
joelkesler··on How Dropbox Hacks Your Mac
Same problem. When working with or moving files in folders other than the dropbox folder, I still find the dropbox application taking up large amounts of CPU. Dropbox also, in the last few months, has been messing up my spotlight database and causing mdworker and fontd to use all available cpu.

Then I start getting console messages like this: mds (Error) FMW: WE ARE DROPPING FMW EVENTS!

All disappears after disabling Dropbox (and rebuilding caches and the spotlight database)

Behaviour seen on multiple macs I own.

joelkesler··on iPhone 7
I do quite regularly.
joelkesler··on Remote code execution, git, and OS X
I would recommend also installing an updated git through homebrew and using that instead.
joelkesler··on Remote code execution, git, and OS X
Not everyone has Xcode installed.

For those of us who have only installed the Command Line Tools, you will find the Apple supplied git at /Library/Developer/CommandLineTools/usr/bin/git

so the command to disable this vulnerable version is:

   sudo chmod -x /Library/Developer/CommandLineTools/usr/bin/git

If you do not have Xcode installed but do have the Command Line Tools, you will find the vulnerable git /Library/Developer/CommandLineTools/usr/bin/git

so the command would be:

  sudo chmod -x /Library/Developer/CommandLineTools/usr/bin/git
joelkesler··on Smartwatches and the three-second rule
Agreed. When The Verge first started, I was impressed with their content. It seemed generally well thought out and researched. Since Joshua Topolsky left, a lot of what (and who) had made the site great has disappeared, replaced with half thought out opinion pieces and trendy fluff.

I do also miss 90 seconds on The Verge.

(Off topic: other then Ars Technica and Anandtech, are there any sites people recommend for good tech writing and news?)

joelkesler··on It Turns Out Cancer Can Be Killed After All
Can anyone with relevant knowledge in this field comment on this? Are the treatments described in the article effective?

The way it is described sounds too good to be true.

joelkesler··on Google OnHub Review
Sadly, I agree. Over the last year or so, the quality of content produced by The Verge has noticeably decreased. I find it difficult to take their opinions of tech seriously.
joelkesler··on Hola VPN turns 10M users into exit nodes
Tunnelbear recently released a chrome plugin for their VPN service. I hear good things about it. (I personally use the application on my Mac)

joelkesler··on Transmit for iOS
I would also recommend checking out "StreamToMe"[1] and its server/transcoding app "ServeToMe". The client app works on iOS and Mac, while the server app works on both mac and windows.

The good support for most audio and video formats (including the ability to stream the original file or transcode it to reduce bit-rate) and the dead simple set up are great. I am quite impressed with how it works, and find it much easier to work with than Subsonic and other Java based media.
