joejohnson··on Boeing 787s must be reset every 51 days or 'misleading data' is shown (2020)
This was news in 2020. Has it been fixed?
joejohnson··on Apple may stop producing Vision Pro by the end of 2024
This product will go the way of the Apple Watch. Deemed a failure before eventually becoming the category leader about 3 years and 3 iterations later. The price will come down, the (few) hardware rough edges will be softened, and enough support from the massive iOS developer pool will create a “killer app” that starts to build momentum here.

Misleading FUD from Macrumors trying to get clicks.

joejohnson··on Starship Flight 5: Launch and booster catch [video]
Amen! If it turns out we can’t make humans a multiplanetary species in any reasonable timeframe, at least we can make the last few decades of livable earth climate a friendly atmosphere for US business interests.
joejohnson··on Tesla's value drops $60B after investors fail to hail self-driving 'Cybercab'
There was a recall of the entire first production run because the accelerator pedal would slip off and jam the pedal down.
joejohnson··on Tesla's value drops $60B after investors fail to hail self-driving 'Cybercab'
Cybertruck is the perfect example of over promised / under delivered. The Cybertruck is the modern day Delorean, with even worse build-quality issues.
joejohnson··on IRS Direct File adds 12 additional states, covers more tax situations in 2025
Still not supported because it does not handle the Foreign Earned Income exclusion.
joejohnson··on The coming long-run slowdown in corporate profit growth and stock returns [pdf] (2023)
The 401k is an invention that is yet to prove its efficacy. The first 401ks were opened in 1978, so if you were entering the workforce then you’d be retiring this decade!

So, we will see if this privatization of pensions really benefits us all or merely enriched a generation of asset managers while absolving the corporate and the government from providing pensions for workers.

joejohnson··on Brazil's X ban is sending lots of people to Bluesky
Mastodon, Bluesky, many other less-popular federated social networks.
joejohnson··on Brazil's X ban is sending lots of people to Bluesky
Hopefully most people migrate to one of the alternatives not owned by an American oligarch
joejohnson··on As an Employee, You Are Disposable (2023)
Not at my company. We’re more like a family than a traditional startup.
joejohnson··on Surveillance and interference: Israel's covert war on the ICC
Hacker News has become a bizarrely censored place on the internet. This is a huge hacking story and it’s been flagged and removed from the front page all day.
joejohnson··on Big Tech and Silicon Valley are transforming the military-industrial complex
Apparently this is the closest a post can get to discussing the in-progress genocide without being instantly removed from the front page.

A few other comments here are saying the Brown study is rather sparse on details or recent examples. Have a quick peak into the [flagged] graveyard and there’s plenty of examples of Amazon and Google’s projects in support of the IDF.

joejohnson··on Abu Zubaydah’s drawings expose the US’s depraved torture policy
The fact that you’re dismissing such violence as a “relatively minor fuckup” is sort of the point OP is making..

Guantanamo and these black sites have been in operation for decades.

joejohnson··on Noam Chomsky: “We’re approaching the most dangerous point in human history”
You keep insisting there’s absolutely no connection between the US signing a defense deal with Ukraine and Russia invading. Then what’s your theory as to why Putin invaded?
joejohnson··on Noam Chomsky: “We’re approaching the most dangerous point in human history”
He substantiates his claim that the expansion of NATO is a perceived threat to Russia. Your mischaracterization of this as a “false dichotomy” with the other point (that Putin is a murderous dictator, which he agrees is true) doesn’t have anything to do with your unsubstantiated claim that he’s being disingenuous.
joejohnson··on Noam Chomsky: “We’re approaching the most dangerous point in human history”
This is not what a dichotomy is. Chomsky’s point is that both the expansion of NATO and Putin being a dictator played a part in the invasion of Ukraine. He’s presenting these two facts as the opposite of a dichotomy!
joejohnson··on JFK Assassination Records – 2021 Additional Documents Release
This isn’t some speculative scenario about how JFK felt toward Dulles; JFK fired Dulles after the Bay of Pigs!

But the failed invasion of Cuba was not an isolated incident. JFK was undermined by an intelligence community he did not control many times, another famous one being the CIA-backed military coup against Charles de Gaul which also failed. But the French foreign minister to the US has record of a conversation with Kennedy where he says he is not fully in control of his country’s foreign policy.

joejohnson··on JFK Assassination Records – 2021 Additional Documents Release
I’ve been to Dealey Plaza. The shot would have been far simpler to the left before the motorcade turned, and the car would have been going even slower then. The angle from the window toward JFK at point in the parade where was shot makes it much harder to triangulate the sounds of the bullets.

But all of this discussion is rather silly because the government itself has accepted that more than two bullets entered the president and the governor and they could not have all come from the book depository window.

joejohnson··on Cuba′s Covid vaccine rivals Pfizer, Moderna

joejohnson··on Survey shows people no longer believe working hard will lead to a better life
Looking at the data more closely, it seems this (international) survey is not representative of the average views among Americans. So there is a large propaganda gap between Americans and others in the western world.
joejohnson··on Survey shows people no longer believe working hard will lead to a better life
Wages across the western world have been flat for about 40 years, yet productivity has grown immensely in that same time. We should be asking ourselves where all that extra wealth ended up.

joejohnson··on Larry Flynt, pornographer and self-styled First Amendment champion, dies at 78
Pretty lame obituary from the Washington Post, self-styled champion of democracy.
joejohnson··on What’s interesting about the Florida water system hack is that we heard about it
The United States will not be a part of the “developed” world in 20 years; too much aging infrastructure is being neglected because the country is too corrupt to actually govern effectively.

joejohnson··on Are the Persian Gulf city-states slave societies?
Companies finding their way around rules by manipulating lawmakers sounds “systemic” or “structural”. And the example I gave was literally a law banning use of slave labor. Only difference is where the slaves are located.
joejohnson··on Are the Persian Gulf city-states slave societies?
You can be outraged at two things at the same time.

But the apartheid situation in Israel is perhaps a more blatant example of ongoing human rights abuse, and thus easier to understand compared to the more subtle racism as class subjection in the US.

joejohnson··on Are the Persian Gulf city-states slave societies?
Look at an example from the other end of the spectrum, Switzerland, a capitalist society with a good human rights record (at least that’s the general consensus among western nations).

One of their largest multinationals, Nestlé, successfully fought a policy proposal last year that would require Swiss corporations to follow environmental and human rights regulations across their entire supply chain (the Konzernverantwortungsinitiative [1]).

Weeks after this initiative barely failed to pass, Nestlé won a decision in the US Supreme Court meaning the country could not be sued by former child slaves in US court [2].
